The Walled City was actually located in Hong Kong. Back when Hong Kong was still a British colony, the Chinese government wanted to take back control of it since it was initially a Chinese military fort and the colonial government happily went completely hands-off for anything that happens inside because of how messed up it was there. As a result it became literally lawless and the worst kinds of people gather inside. It has been revamped as a park after it was torn down and I spent my childhood growing up around that area because my primary school is around there. Also, the houses looked SO good in this game. I was born in the 90s and lived in the rural side of Hong Kong. My parents' house looked almost identical to the ones shown in the game - the tiles, layout, and the vibe are just spot on. I'd say even till this day, some of the houses in the rural areas still look like this!

@rexs.5188 i mean it's quite literally a hell hole because it's anarchy, so I would expect no one's happy there lol. People there were mostly wanted, drug addicts, or gangs. There were basically only three types of businesses going on there - brothels, gambling and drugs. Some very poor people live there as well I think. The police wouldn't go in because the British colonial government decided they won't care. Police also took bribes from the local gangs and they just distribute the bribes among themselves (there are a fair few older movies in HK that talked about this).

I lived in Tsim Sha Sui for 3 months back in 1996, wanted to visit while still in Commonwealth (I'm Canadian). I loved it there back then. Couldn't go back now. The Chinese govt imprisoned a university friend of mine (one of the Mikes). I stirred shit online about this, so I'm sure I'm on a list.

@@uncanny_ally I'm sorry to hear that about your friend. I took part in most of the protests few years back and got my ID checked several times on the streets. I have moved to the UK last year and wouldn't dare to go back because the gov has been targeting people who moved out as well. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go there even as a tourist anymore tbh. There is Tokyo or Seoul for that same city vibe without being constantly paranoid of people around you.

not so true, the walled city technically never belonged to the british, nor hong kong (albeit being an enclave inside hong kong). It wasn't legally incorporated until the mid 90s.

Kowloon is in Hong Kong. It is called walled city because the place is so densely populated before. But this place no longer exist now, only traces of the buildings are left.

I actually wonder how just even the name of the game is kinda misleading. Kowloon is an entire huge district of Hong Kong. The place was called something like ”The Walled City of Kowloon”, because it was within Kowloon.

when i see the title i was immediately like hmm that doesn't sound china at all, maybe it's taiwan or hong kong but looking at the design in the game i almost 80% confirm its hong kong

"Why was this demolished?" Ignoring the fire hazard, the sanitary hazard, the health hazard, the appalling living conditions, the systemic crime, and the complete lack of adherance or acknowledgement of building codes or regulation, it was mostly seen as a national embarrassment and a screaming indictment of failed urban development policies. So it was torn down.

Oh i've recently read about the Kowloon walled city. It was pretty wild there until when it was demolished but for all the crimes that happened in the demly lit corridors, apparently the people in the community were really closr to each other (both literally and figuratively)

Fun fact: The word "4" sounded like the word "death" in cantonese and chinese. It is not a peaceful number, many buildings in Hong Kong nowadays do not have 4/F for luck and fortune reason. They will skip every number with 4 in it. After 3/F is 5/F; after 13/F is 15/F. So on.

Cruise ships will not have their decks listed as either 4 or 13 as both numbers are seen as bad. So, they skip the numbers when listing their deck maps. Deck 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 ect... the rooms also have 5 digits on them for the guests. Starting on Deck 8 and up, you can have 08001, 08002, so on and so forth so the rooms can avoid a solo 13 or 4.

Absolutely stunning graphics and ambience. The way they spaced out creepy interactions, building them towards jumpscares, without spamming those constantly in the face. They really gave a lot of time to just soak in that dreadful and desperate atmosphere of the building, that something truly awful happened some time ago. They did such a wonderful job on creating very believable and crazy ant-house looking environment, so much attentions to little details, that shows, that this place was actually habitable by people. Can't appreciate enough how good the environment looked, and the work on the lights is just cheff's kiss, could watch the stopframes forever. Also the ending a bit reminded of that metro-game, when character is leaving the place and witnessing all the souls, that got stuck in that cursed place. Would love for them to use different character models for that occasion, showing, that it's not just decaying old corpses, but actual humans, that lived there, eldery people, children.. Now that I think of it, that lovely dog probably wasn't alive too 😭 Always looking forward towards your playthroughs of these types of games, enjoy them immensely. Thank you! ❤

Planning to start our own little homestead with a family dairy cow, some chickens, and some goats/sheep. Kowloon is in Hong Kong actually. Kowloon city is still there in Hong Kong ,and you may come and take a look at the city😂 but the Kowloon Walled City was the old name of Kowloon City in history and there were lots of crimes and it was lawless. The British gov tried to control and rule over it, the walled city was demolished eventually in those days.

Kowloon makes my birth place Yangzhou look like a palace. Only saying that since apparently Yangzhou is pretty dirt poor economically. I actually didn't know Kowloon existed until this game as well.

First off, the game is going to be scary with those enclosed spaces and eerie noises and secondly the history/saga behind the Kowloon is huge even with it being removed in 1993-1994 for some sources say a new runaway for the nearby now retired Kai Tak Airport which now (all sources say) in the present is a city park (some of the original structure is still there like the southern gate). Moreover, its pipes and overall infrastructure inside constantly was damaged one way or another and unsafe conditions are ever-present due it being ungoverned during its lifetime with its buildings often not uniform. Kowloon is actually Hong Kong, not China. It was technically always chinese-owned territory but they wanted nothing to do with it, meanwhike the rest of Hong kong was british-owned and they didnt want anything to do with it either. I think it was around 20 years ago the city was demolished, but i could be wrong on that figure! Either way it was an extremely dense city where organised crime was ripe & living conditions were abhorrent, yet it also had a community like no other

This games atmosphere is absolutely amazing! The small movements from the flashlight are so natural. Also if you want to see the milky way, on a clear night you can see it around Lauwersoog. A few years ago I was there to watch the shooting stars. You can also still see the city of Groningen. Though if you want to see it clearer i'd indeed suggest less denser places. Like the mountains or desert regions. (And make sure there isn't a full moon cause it be bright! New moon is preferred to have as little light pollution.)

Visited Hong Kong for 3 months back in 1996, staying in Tsim Tsa Shui (part of Kowloon, which is a decent place - the walled city was a former fort in Kowloon). I saw the Walled City Park. I heard some wild stories about the place. Pretty much run by the Triads, and the RHKP wouldn't go in unless it was very serious (i.e. they didn't very much). The 'living spaces' were rarely bigger than a normal closet laid on it's side. Given the heat and humidity, it would have been hellish for most. It was considered to be a place to go to not be found, or of last resort.

Hey you got the game! Yes, Knowloon was really existing sometime in the middle of the 90th I think: it was part of Hong Kong and a small komplex where so exaggerated many people were living in a super small per square metre. The consequenze, if soo ridicolous many poeple are living on the same place, suffering on the whole privacy after all, people tend to become crazy! And so of course the poeple would do questionable and bad things in the end... That's why they decide to tear off the city and were building a park on this place. (I once was reading about an experiment where they had build a city for rats and let them life there, but they were adding more and more rats time after time. It was the same thing, the rats were beconing totally mad and crazy in the end as soon as the amount was too much) -> For this game they never decomposed the town and it became a hunted horror town because of all thew things poeple were doing there. xD

Insym if you ever come back to the US look in to Isle Royale in Michigan. It's a secluded island in Lake Superior and contains a hiking trail with no electricity on the island. It's completely rustic and would be perfect for stargazing.
