my man should've memorized the poem, then he would only need the candle to see the monster and where to step but nothing else... poem would be recitated continuously even in the dark... BUUUUUUUUUT... I have a feeling that the poem isn't what we think it is, it may just be the bait that lures the monster to it's next prey... oooooor what causes the transformation itself and the monster tried to chase him away and save his life... or maybe the transformation into that beautiful beast is the reward and the other monster came to welcome a new omnipotent member... or it's all in his head and his condition causes halucinations... there are so many possibilities

If I'm getting it right, his lungs collapsed, he was being kept alive by machine and drugs, and he arranged to have a family member (probably his daughter) end his suffering while he slept. The whole ordeal, from what I understand, was his denial and desperation, his hope, and eventually his acceptance of the void. The isolated wilderness would then represent the aloneness we all have as we face death. The dark cave I think both the unknown, and his conciousness, with the light going on and off representing him going in and out of awareness. In the cave there appeared to be a noose, which may represent his eventual decision to just let it end. And the monster would be death, oblivion. At first it was screams of fear and for help, but then transitioned to either dead or dad I couldn't quite tell, before being calm and finally blowing out the candle. I like this sort of horror much more than the gorefests that sometimes show up. It's intense, reflective, poetic one could say.
@valerieking5265 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for so much for this explanation; it makes the film a 100% better. Between the candle flame going out, the fact that he didn't have the poem memorized and him pausing all the time to look around, I kept thinking COME ON, quit stalling!!!

I have to say something else about this short. After I watched it and was talking about it and I was telling my mom how the note about the lungs collapsing and then something ticked off in my brain and I remembered when I was in elementary school (this is going back to the 80's and early 90's) that we learned about people in the mining industry and how they had taken canaries with them and the precipitous nature of mining. I thought I had remembed that if a mine closed in that due to the pressure of being down below and oxygen cut off that their lungs could collapse and when I remembered (or thought I did) I start googling and I couldn't find anything on that but I found two things that were associated with mining and the first one was Pneumoconiosis and I think that one is associated with black (because black coal particles) and the other was Silicosis and I think that one is associated with Gold (crystalline silica dust particles I think are Gold) so suddenly I had this whole other take on this film and couldn't help but wonder if the writer made death/creature/monster/human black and gold for this reason. I am going to say more but first will rewatch again....at some point as have to do some other stuff now and if I allow myself one ALTER short it's going to be a half a day before I start doing things.

This film was well-directed and acted, but there were two plotholes I found. Why bring a candle and not a flashlight? This would make more sense if the story were set in the 19th century. Given that he had to rely on candlelight in the cave, why not just memorize the poem beforehand? No light source needed then. I'm sorry but I think we've all seen horror films where people make ridiculous decisions purely as a plot device. Here, the character could have overcome a couple of obstacles ahead of time, and didn't. Like I said, it's generally well-made and none of the holes I described are fatal but were enough to take me out of the film.
