What are some of the things you look for and must haves in your boarding stable?

When it comes to choosing a boarding stable, I always prioritize the safety and well-being of my horse. Clean facilities, knowledgeable staff, and ample turnout space are some of the things I look for. What about you?

You know it's a good video when it keeps you hooked for all 10 minutes even though you're not looking for a boarding situation, haha

There are no good boarding barns. If you thing it's good, you probably just don't know what's going on. This video assumes there is boarding to choose from. In my area there's not. What's left after so much closed the past 5-10 years are just idiots cutting corners and with not a care in the world about your horse. I finally gave my horse away, a 50k imported dressage horse, because he was getting abused. I tried 3 barns the last 2 years. All had critical short comings like not feeding gastrogard when he had ulcers (from stressful boarding with not enough hay) and so much more. I had to save his life. My budget was unlimited. Still nothing good was around here. I've owned horses for 35 years. Now I've decided never again until I have my own farm. I paid 12k in vet bills, ulcers caused by the barn, just in 10 months. Never again. Last place I boarded they used pellet bedding. Just a little heap in the middle, no water, just hard pellets. My grey horse had to lay in his pee, it would harden on his coat and you'd see dried drip marks. Then the barn owner laughed at how silly it was my gelding laid right in the pee. Where else would he lay? There's no bedding!!!! it was just terrible.

I am so sorry to hear that! As a barn owner that tries to go above and beyond in care and service I am saddened to hear your story of places that are not doing their job. It sounds like you made the right call not allowing your horses to go through that. We are in the Midwest where quality care is more available. I wish you the best and thank you for sharing your story.

Sorry for your frustration- I’m hitting the same road block right now. I’ve always worked full or part time at the barns my horse is kept that way I had inside info to how managers/owners and team members cared about the horses in general. I’ve always been OCD about my shifts and care for the horses- but not everyone else is like that. I’m lucky to have been able to work at the farms my boy has been to bc I was able to catch so much that was going wrong. Multiple farms lying about giving him hay when they say they are, cutting his grain down without saying anything in the middle of winter , not giving meds, not having access to water. At one point he had been in stall rest and I had giving him oral medication twice a day for 4 months straight. Later on, I tried trusting some of the workers (that said they were also trainers) to give him his meds as he was a good horse to medicate, and in my 10 years of owning him- no one ever has said he was bad to give oral medication for. Within a couple days he was violently throwing his head to get his medication. Turns out they were hitting him and then decided to stop medicating him without telling me. After I found out and picked up being the only one to do administer medicine again after a couple days he was normal again, and hasn’t been an issue for me nor other people. My best advice to boarders is no matter how much the farm seems great- offer to work part time and see how the farm functions day to day, you’ll have a better understanding of what is out of place when you come visit and know the workers and the kind of workers they are. The worst thing to be is an uninvolved boarder unfortunately. I have two retired horses- after them, I’m not getting anymore til I also have my own farm to ensure they’re safe.. it’s so stressful trying to advocate for their care from afar..
