I live 500 metres from the centre of a town that has grown from 1500 people to over 6000 people in 5 year. We have never had so many idiots in the area before; they think that they are entitled to feed & pat my horses (our property is on the main road) & when I politely asked on our community page that people don’t feed our horses or pat them I was verbally & then kicked off the community page (we’ve lived here for 38 years) & then we had an increased amount of rubbish thrown into our paddocks. I’ve now added another hot wire above the fence so that people can’t reach above the fence to touch my horses without getting a shock. I’m sick of entitled people as well - they have knowingly moved into a rural area & they think that they can do whatever they feel like.

I know what you are talking about. This sh*t made me overthink again and again how to keep people away from the horses, because telling them doesn't change their behaviour a bit and most times they will argument with you (and tell lies about having horses of their own, like mam, then go and feed your own horse, how about that?). That lady with the "horse" was so persistent the only way I could get her to leave was asking her for her contact details, if something happens to one of the horses because of her, that I can tell police who might be the one who had caused it. She was not the only one though. The only thing that really helped was to put up a 2nd fence, at least 1.5m from the normal fence, so they would never be able to reach the horse. That seems to keep the petting zoo enthusiasts a bit under control and then they will also loose interest in feeding. You can tell them multiple reasons why it is bad to feed the horses, they won't listen. But as soon as you ask them for contact detail and legal responsibilities, they seem to reconsider. Egoistical bunch. That's also the only tip I can give you, put a second fence inside, it's still cheaper than having to call the vet and less painful to loosing one of the horses. Because if something happens, no one will take the responsibility. Also, put up a camera (idk how the privacy laws are, where you live, here in Germany it is only allowed to have stored footage for areas inside the property lines, people crossing that line are also officially trespassing).

About 10 years ago, the barn owner called me in a panic. She had been trying to catch the 5 geldings to calm them down. A kids birthday balloon came floating in to the pasture. The other 4 horses took off running. Mine wasn’t sure why everyone was running, but didn’t want to be left behind. So, he spun, flipped his tail up, and promptly caught the string with the balloon in his tail. Being a herd animal, he wanted to be with the rest of the herd. The other 4 horses were terrified of him with his new friend flapping in the wind. It took me about 30 minutes to grab him & rescue the rest of the horses. He wasn’t afraid of the balloon, I think he was more worried about why the other horses were running! We had to cool everyone out. Thankfully, no tying up nor colic.

Good message to the clueless.

Cog Hill Farm! I saw that one, too! Scared the geese so bad they wouldn't even go in the water. After seeing these two shows, I won't be using any more helium balloons for any reasons. Considering how expensive helium's getting that's not a hard choice. I've never released a paper lantern, but I guess they have the same problem. You can blow up the balloons, and tie them to ribbons that can dangle from your ceiling, or be tied anywhere you want to decorate. No need to let them drift. Also we need to remember to pick up any that pop, since they're a choking hazard.
@brassbuckles7 күн бұрын
There's really no telling where it was even released. It could've drifted for miles, especially since CC didn't find any more of them. Unless they are biodegradable and otherwise harmless to animals, they shouldn't be released at all because there's no way to know when or where they will land or what damage they may cause. There is cultural significance to the lanterns for Asian New Year celebrations, and I get that. But there's a lot of risk involved with fire and anything that isn't biodegradable, plus they clearly terrify horses.

I feel so sad and desperate for Pearl. I hope and pray CC that she will perk up and continue to improve under your wonderful care. She has had so many struggles and has only survived this far with your love and care. I can't bear to think of another loss after losing Skeletor. I do hope you find another farm soon, far away from humans. Those lanterns and fireworks are such a worry near livestock.

CC is keeping track of her heartbeat. If it gets fairly high she will know that Pearl is suffering as in pain. I learned that from Vet Dr. Lydia on Horse Plus Humane. She is really good at spotting things on those poor rescue buy out horses and she can spot the ones who are hurting before she even gets her stethoscope on them and immediately administers pain or anti inflammatory meds while the process all the others and she usually puts them in a pen or stall by themselves until she can further evaluate them. I have learned a lot from her and the other vet Dr. Gina. Horse Plus is blessed to have TWO great vets on staff and one on call each day.

I’m so impressed with Scarlet. I think that might have been a bit lost there in the video but she has come such a long way! Your training and hard work are shining with her. You can tell she was nervous but she was really calm and you can see her thinking. Great job as a trainer CC. Poor Pearl, I’m so grateful she’s in a safe place with you with a full tummy and pain management for however long she has left.

CC said her stalls are on the small side, even if you install cameras to monitor what's happening and rush to the barn, once a big horse as Pearl gets cast you still need help and space to turn her around and then you must hope she's strong enough to stand up. CC also wrote in a comment she ordered a shed like Nigels but bigger and is waiting for it to be delivered. Just to answer those who are upset that CC doesn't keep Pearl in a stall.

You, of course, are absolutely amazing, yourself, to have authored such an incredible change in Scarlet and so many other horses. I hope Pearl feels better, soon. Thank you, also, for the lesson in how "space junk" can be so detrimental to horses. I now understand why you are angry at people who release random floating things into the sky. May 2025 bring much happiness to you and yours.

I have done desensitizing with horses before. One that I know that is quite scared of things is a haflinger named Oliver. Poor guy has a trauma background and even is scared of a smartphone. But on Halloween I had brought a big green spider to the ranch and showed it to several horses, including Oliver. And to my surprise he actually accepted the big spider on his back quite easily. I believe that Oliver is a "visual learner". And he was in a dry lot with 3 other horses: Toby, Sammyo and Tater Tot. First I put the spider on Sammyo. No reaction at all. Then I put the spider on Toby.. When I was moving the spider from Sammyo to Toby I saw Oliver was watching. Toby didnt care about the spider either. Then I took the spider off of Toby and moved with it towards Oliver. He only shied away like a few inches. Got the spider on his back on the first try! 😮 That same morning I got a saddle pad on Oliver too - another first!! But once again I had put it onto the other 2 horses first. And he saw and understood that the item was not dangerous.. But Oliver is smart. He once opened a gate on his own. That shows intelligence. As for Tater Tot, he is a mini and is kind of wild. I never would have guessed what that red "bag" you found was. Never saw a paper lantern before. And I certainly have found and picked up all sorts of junk in the horse pastures. Back in autumn found a bunch of string that came from who knows where!

One has to love Stewy - a horse that is mischievous and comfortable in himself and with his surrounds. It's sad that Pearl is regressing a bit. I watched JJCale, my border colie/labrador cross, go own hill extremely fast over a week after a trip to the vet for a checkup. He was 22 when I had him put down on chrstmas day. I hope that Pearl recovers and that you and your animals have a great start to the new year

Any animal owner who uses fireworks cannot truly call themselves an animal lover. Fireworks cause immense stress, fear, and even physical harm to animals, both domestic and wild. Choosing to prioritize fleeting personal enjoyment over the well-being of creatures that depend on us for care and protection reflects a lack of consideration and compassion. True animal lovers understand the responsibility that comes with caring for animals and make choices that prioritize their safety and comfort above all else.

I remember when the 4th of July was just a holiday for that day. That is bad enough on animals. Now it starts days before the 4th and continues days after the 4th. My dog is terrified for days. I live a large development so there is no way to get away from it. I just don’t understand the selfishness either. Last 4th of July I was so mad that I stood in the street and yelled at my neighbors setting off fireworks days before the 4th. Why can’t cities and counties make an ordinance that fireworks are for the 4th only and need to stop at a reasonable time. If I ever win the lottery me and my animals will be far from a neighbor.
@brassbuckles7 күн бұрын
I am fortunate that it seems like my closest neighbors don't shoot off many fireworks. But I'm doubly or even triply fortunate because my cat doesn't seem too concerned by the noise they make. He's more scared of thunder (and the vacuum, but only if it's too close to him) than he is of fireworks. But I've definitely seen and dealt with animals being terrified of the noise. A lot of small children don't like it either, which begs the question of why people insist on the noisiest ones.

@@jaray2555 When there’s even the slightest chance of fireworks, my family takes responsibility for the horses, as I suffer from PTSD and find fireworks to be a significant trigger. In my lounge, my dog and I have a pop-up tent that we use as a safe haven. It isn’t set up all the time, but when it is, it provides us with comfort and security. Inside, we snuggle while I watch a film on my iPad. This might seem unconventional to some, but my animals are my lifeline and my world, and ensuring their safety is my highest priority. My dog has an incredible sensitivity to fireworks-he can detect them from miles away, responding to their high-pitched sounds and even the faintest scents. As they approach, he begins to shake with fear. At 35kg, he’s too large for me to hold in my arms, but this arrangement works perfectly for us. If anyone finds it excessive or strange, that’s their issue, not mine.
