Cuphea is hands down the best hummingbird plant I've found for my area (7a). I've tried a LOT of different things and nothing else even comes close. If you could share any knowledge you have on the subject of sour mulch I would greatly appreciate it! I’ve never really heard anyone speak about it but a couple weeks ago I had 14 yards of hardwood mulch spread that was purchased from a very reputable company here in North Raleigh and within 24 hours my plants and shrubs looked like the leaves were burnt and dying. It completely devastated my garden. I’ve been gardening for over 20 years and love to collect unusual and rare plants over that time that may be dead and never return.

HI Jim It appears that your back garden has considerable shade, at least this time of year. Some o the plants both annuals and perennials I thought needed more sun. Are you finding success with salvia and the like blooming in partial shade? My back beds have varying levels of sun/shade. I love saliva, but am afraid to plant.
