When the ground is dry I dig a hole and add water in the hole before I plant. Make sure that the plant is watered in their pot then put plant in hole. Plants responded well this way. Thanks for all the good advice on shrubs and perennials.

Thank you for encouraging people to look beyond Arborvitae for screening. It looks so much better when you mix it up a bit. And let’s face it, they are just too large for most urban spaces and need to be pruned far too often for screening purposes

Clever forethought added to this beautiful planting. My favorite is the alternating groups of Aucuba & Cast Iron plants. (There are many brick commercial & residential buildings with Cast Iron planted in mass with a border of Liriope in my area.) Great video, thx!

I don't have a dog, but my front yard used to be a major pit stop for every dog in the neighborhood. They were obsessed with the thick green grass I had and were peeing (and more!) all over my front yard. I started putting out pepper pellets etc. but it wasn't enough. The first thing I did was plant boxwoods which they don't seem to like around the perimeter of the yard with a wide strip of mulch in of them. I replaced every bit of green with wood mulch and then planted it all up with barberries, thorny roses, Russian sage, lavender, and sedum. They now only stop when I let anything get a little weedy.

Great video, Jim! We have several path areas that were eroding. Found some tumbled concrete blocks at Lowes (Olde Manor 12x4x8 @ $2.98 each) and used end-to end (recessed 2”) as water breaks across the paths/ down the slope. They look great, slow the water, and keep the mulch in place. Just a thought…good luck!

I would love to know some measurements on the space! Videos always make the “area” or square footage hard to determine… I’m trying to figure out a screening plan between me and my neighbor but I only have 16 feet of planting space between my house and the property line with a length of about 40 feet, not to mention that side of the house faces WEST in zone 7b in Georgia…. Full sun from 10AM till sundown…. Just when I think “ I can do this “! Jim throws TEXTURE and leaf size in the thought process….. I’m feeling overwhelmed….

Jim, can you explain the different types of compost and how to use them? Going to a garden center you can usually find cow manure or mushroom compost. You mentioned not to use a lot of cow manure, but I see people that get compost delivered and use it as a mulch. So what kind would that be?

I'm not a garden snob, whatsoever and hopefully not coming across as disrespectful to anyone - but it's so refreshing to see such a beautiful variety of plants and shrubs other than a wall of arborvitaes. Plus, I know that's not your style and the arborvitaes wouldn't survive urine - but just look at how interesting this walkway will soon look.

Observation: I plant like Stephany, while squatting, with my hands. I notice you plant standing, with your feet. You opened the bag of cow compost with your shovel and you busted up the root bound shrub with your shovel....all while standing. I would have been squatting to do both of those tasks using my Felcos and/or a garden knife. Therefore, when I garden, I am up, down, up, down, up, down resulting in back-breaking work. Then, I have to take something over the counter for back pain. Do you consciously stand while working in the garden? Have you trained yourself over the years to prevent fatigue? Honestly, whenever I plant anything, I am squatting or on my hands and knees. It never occurred to me to stand up straight and plant. Obviously, you cannot plant things out of a cell pack while standing.
@JimPutnam2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have absolutely tried to avoid standing and squatting my whole career. Very observant on your part. I plant annuals on my knees and everything else I try and stand for.

Differences in gender Susan. Us gals just don't have the same upper body strength. Our whole balance is different due to differences in pelvis shape. Jim never had his abs stretched like a beach ball either 😂 Work on core strength, pelvic tilts & Kegels, it helps the back. Advising as a nurse & owner of a 39 year L5-S1 disc herniation. Old fashioned Doans pills are magnesium salicylate, great for muscle fatigue. All this is why it's SO hard for even tough gals to split wood 😂

Do you ever use pelletized gypsum to break up clay soil? It seems to work for me, although it is advised to apply it every year.
@JimPutnam2 жыл бұрын
No, you really shouldn't apply gypsum. It is recommended by people that know very little about soil science. You will leach nutrients much faster and likely would cause a different set of issues over time. Farmers use it as a last option when dealing with soil that has too much salt from over fertilizing.

Good afternoon Jim. I have a question for ya! I just converted my whole backyard from grass to woodchips and was wondering about grub control for beneath the woodchips. I do have grubs but not sure if I have to get rid of them since grass is dying under the cardboard and chips. What would you do?
@Ash_92 жыл бұрын
The grubs that are found in mulch are breaking down the cellulose and are part of the natural decomposition of the mulch that you laid down. Getting rid of them would slow the process of decomposition and they would just come back because there is a food source for them.
