Depending on which dial he's turned to changes which chaos god reaches out to him telepathically while pretending to be the emperor. Although the concept of "Archa-John the Ever-Grammaticus" is a collaboration of all 4 chaos gods so things go pretty much the same way in each different turn of the dial.

Crazy fan theory: Big E staged the Heresy but then it got way out of hand. A minor civil war would actually be GREAT for the Emperor. It would draw out rebel sympathisers amongst "conquered" worlds, it would be a further demonstration of strength, and it would help cull the rest of the Legions down to a manageable size. So Big E deliberately tried to sow mistrust among the Primarchs & treated some of them like shit, to encourage them to turn on each other. ...except the Emperor wasn't as smart or subtle as he thought he was. So he intended to "deliberately" turn 2-3 Legions rogue, but the other 6-7 were Not part of the plan.

My head cannon is that no one noticed if a Custodes was female or not. I mean who is checking a 12 foot super soldier's genitals anyway. The writers have said that they wanted to include female Custodes from the start but got blocked by management so its not like this is out of the blue or enforced top down. Overall execution may have been poor but its not like this retcon is below the quality of others especially since it was just a small story that is getting blow way out of proportion. I'm kind of tired of people saying this is going to end the franchise when there is nothing inherently wrong with female Custodes and any problems with the retcon are symptoms of greater problems with the writing that won't get addressed if paired with the slew of bad faith takes coming out of this incredibly bloated controversy.
