I am a retired Hospice RN(30yrs) your channel is wonderful. Thank you. Ppl need to hear all this. The only problem I hand in my Hospice years was when their doctors left us to explain their situation and explain it to the patients and their families EVERYTHING. You are a HOSPICE STAR

Hello Nurse Julie, Two nights ago I was at a friend's house when the hospice nurse was making the first visit. I could tell after a few minutes my friend didn't understand what was going on. He thought that the nurse was there to help his dad get better. His dad has cancer in two or three places and also kidney disease. His kidneys are at 2% and he doesn't want. I REALLY think that the doctor should have told his son that his was dieing and what hospice is. I finally asked him if he knew what the nurse was there for. He said og course he did, to help his dad get better. The poor nurse looked at him and then at me. I feel so sorry for him and for the nurse. The doctor should be should have his tail kicked. Thank you for everything you do. I found you after my wife of 31years died I July 18, 2020. Please take care of yourself we all need you.

We lost our daughter last October from liver disease. She was in the hospital about a week before being taken to a Hospice House. That was the best move ever. The staff was outstanding. They kept us advised of her condition and never seemed to tire of our questions, always answering them honestly. No-one should ever be afraid of going to hospice or being cared for by hospice.

Thank you for doing this! I have been a teacher and have a master's in school counseling. I have been working as a CNA for 6 months in long-term care. I have always been fascinated by Hospice and am considering doing a fast track RN program to eventually be a Hospice nurse. I love the idea of being able to give proper care to the dying and their family.

I worked for multiple funeral homes removing the deceased loved ones body and it is very mechanical but I always ask if the family would like more time with the loved one before leaving. Many understand their loved one is already gone but others want that time. I always cooperate with the families requests. From Ohio. I’ve seen every aspect of the dying process having lost family members bedside.

Thank you CoolLake. I made the mistake in listening to a sibling and not making prearrangement for my dad prior at the choice funeral home. My sib,His reasoning, it may take awhile for my dad to die and FH had another location that had closed down do to economy. What turned out to be my dad’s last 2 days, I stated with many siblings around him, that I’ll call the home after. It was now so close, I didn’t want to leave my dad, it could wait. Uhhh, I get a call a last call, that it could be hours, I drive there, get stuck by sooo many lights, I arrive, rush down hall, walk in look up to in-law, he says, “He passed.” I reacted with uncontrollable crying and I knew and believed it that death was coming. So I cry for about 10 mins leaning on him, like a hug, his face to mine. My mask was catching the tears. I repetitively kept stroking his arms, his collar bone, his right leg (thinner than a child’s) and holding his hand, like a handshake. So family finally walks out of room, we are at a facility. My spouse says we need to go for a walk. We go downstairs and I take a text message and spouse gets a soda pop (10 or so mins). We come back upstairs. CNA tells us she HAS to clean my dad one more time. We then get to see him again, other family arrive. Another sibling is alone with him, soI walk out of the room again……at this point he has only been dead 40 mins. When I step out, there is a man in a black suit, mask too and I’m thinking…..”what the heck….. I turn my head to the left and I see the gurnee with a beige color w/ a design body bag. I was Furious ! I say, “The Undertaker is here already!” The man was nice, he said for all of us to take our time. The sibling and spouse that called were long gone. Needless to say, I felt pressured to leave once all the siblings were there. 3 grandchildren came and never saw him. My dear son, signed in, walked to Grandpa’s room and the name plate was gone. He arrived approx 2 hrs after dad’s death. My son called us, we told him that I knew he may have been on the road so I didn’t call him. Ugh. I’m happy my dad has a new life now. Everyone just speak up do what you have to do. The sibling that called undertaker seems to be more afraid of death. His visits with dad were much less. Thanks for listening everyone.

When my mother experienced agitation the Ativan actually made it worse. One hospice nurse addressed it by prescribing Valium instead which really helped.Be an advocate for your loved ones. Odds are there is something that can help them. The nurse said she witnessed it a lot where the Ativan actually makes it worse. Like I said, they know ❤

Thank you and God Bless you! You have just given me some peace at last. I had a very rough go with my Mom growing up. As a hint, I actually moved to another country to get away from sibs and Mom. She refused the treatment for her kidney disease after several months. I have always wondered how bad it was for her. After many years of therapy I have come to understand her much better. I'm glad it could have been peacful for her. God knows she didn't have much peace here. Thank you.

A similar thing happened to me- slightly different tho. I was driving to work and out of nowhere this intense feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. Took my breath away actually. Fifteen minutes later once I got to work- my mom called me distraught that my dad had just passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack. I think when you have a heart felt connection to your loved ones - you just know. Sorry for your loss ❤. It’s never easy😢

Dear Julie---- I just found you on youtube and want to say thank you thank you thank you. My mother is 100 years old and has dementia. Lately she is sleeping more and more. My brother, who lives near her, visits every evening. She is less and less interested in food. I don't know that she has any specific illness (I have to ask my brother). She is often anxious about non-specific things. She just gets frightened because she forgets where she is. Anyway, I love your videos and will be checking in regularly. And will be buying Barbara Kerrie's book. (Do I have the right name?)

Can you do a video on stroking the patient during the active dying process. A hospice nurse explained this to us when she noticed that we were constantly stroking my Mama. I didn’t realize that we were stimulating her body while her body was trying to die. Holding her hand was okay, but stoking her arms, face could stimulate the body. After we stopped stroking, Mama passed peacefully a couple of hours after. I see people doing this to their loved ones and I wonder if anyone has explained this to them. Thank you for your videos! I have been the caregiver for my Mama and my father in law during the last year of their lives. Our hospice experience was amazing! Your videos have helped me so much, wondering if I was doing the right things for them. We need to normalize death and the dying process!!

So sorry for You! I’m a retired nurse and it’s hard to foresee how much your physical abilities will decrease, it depends on where the tumour is located in the spine, what has your doctor said? If you know the positions of your tumours you can google spine and it’s nerves but the best is if you dare to ask someone in your medical team. I will pray for you❤️

This expresses that you believe the true way to heaven !! : Lord Jesus, I have admitted I'm a sinner being sorry. Therefore, I do not trust in my own works to go to heaven because I realize, being a sinner, I cannot offer the perfect blood sacrifice that you require to pay for sin. Instead, I fully trust, believing in my heart, that your finished work on the cross, your one perfect blood sacrifice; when you bled, suffered and died, in my place, paid for my sins in full, past, present and future ! And I believe that you rose from the dead and that you are God Almighty, God the Son, alive for evermore !!! Therefore, I fully trust that you have forgiven me by cleansing me from all sin in your precious blood, which purified my soul. Thank you Lord Jesus for greatly loving me, for forgiving me, saving me from hell and giving me eternal life and sealing me with the Holy Spirit dwelling within me forever! My mom was actively dying; unconscious, death rattle, skin mottled. While sitting with her holding her hand I told her I loved her, I'll miss her, but it's ok to go when she's ready. Hours later I told her I was going to make some dinner for our friend who was with us and me, but they'll be with her and I'll be back. When dinner was ready to be dished up (just some spaghetti and jar sauce) our friend called me to come quick. Mom had passed. She obviously didn't think I should see her when that happened.

Is it normal for oral morphine to cause stomach pain? Kind, 102 yo Grandma would get very angry at the morphine doses and accuse us of making her sick. She’d beg us not to give it to her, and double over in agony with each dose. She was put on morphine the last couple days of life to try to ease agitation and help her sleep. Is it possible a very frail and full dementia who I had the pleasure of being by her side when for her final few weeks because the carers were too busy to sit with her. She was blind and she would sing and pray and I would join in. I was only a trainee carer and I only 16 but I feel like some of the older carers resented me because their clients like me more. Would she have felt my presence and did she wait until I went home to die without me having to go through that

Julie, thank you for using the word death and dead instead of passing or passed. When I hear someone say “they passed “, I wonder what test they just passed.

What do hospice volunteers do?

My family was blessed to have hospice volunteers come in when our Dad was in hospice care at the end of his cancer fight. The nurses took care of Dad and the volunteers took care of Mom by running some laundry, picking up a few groceries, doing some light cleaning, and most important of all, giving Mom a loving shoulder and a listening ear.
