The reason this boat caught fire so quickly is still an enigma and a mystery. You’ll be the judge of what happened, as we have exclusive footage from just moments before, when the boat was perfectly fine. What do you think could have caused it, and do you think there’s any chance of recovering this boat?

The boat was somewhat of an older boat. No telling if it was properly maintained. Inboard/outboard engines can have explosions in the engine compartment if not ventilated prior to starting. Since it did not explode at the ramp when they initially started the engine, I doubt that gas vapor accumulation was not the issue. Perhaps a fuel line or fuel pump or fuel fitting failed and flooded the engine compartment? Still need a source of ignition. The fact that they had a flat trailer tire sheds some potential light on lack of maintenance. Glad they were not hurt.

I had an older 26' woody and I was pretty thorough in my pre voyage check. 3 hours in our trip we stopped for a swim. When we got back into the boat, my 8yo son said I think I smell gas dad. Which I didn't smell but opened the dog house cover and checked all over. Sure enough a fuel line had worked loose at the filter. Not much of a flow, but could have ended up being a disaster. So you have to be on top of everything in a boat. You have to remember, you can't just get out and walk away from it. If you're at a dock, it's not just your life and boat, it's many others as well. So don't skimp on your pre trip inspection.

That is too bad. I am glad no one was burned or drowned. PFD in a surprise like that, they probably didn’t have time to rummage for them which is not a bad idea to wear PFDs at all times. I imagine a fuel line split or the fuel tank had a leak since the fire seemed to start in that area. This is why it is so important to open the engine hatch and ventilate first. Smell the engine area and start the motor watching for leaks or anything out of place.

There is no way to tell the source of the fire. The fire could have started for a number of reasons. ruptured fuel or hydraulic fluid line, or electrical. There was no visible explosion so we can (at the least for the moment) rule out unvented gas vapors in the engine compartment. The owner was very lucky that the fire ignited close to the launching ramp. Imagine this happening in the middle of Haulover inlet with an outgoing tide.

Not only does your boat burn, but then you get a flat tire on your trailer hauling it away.

Siempre que miro la forma en que se apaga un incendio, pasa lo mismo,la lentitud en apagar el fuego, con tantos recursos disponibles. Simplemente se quema todo más la contaminación.

It seems engine oil catch fire. It could be a leak near the engine or over it. When got hot the oil carch fire and spread really quickly, same thing happens in cars

Whether it was a perished or loose fuel line leaking fuel combined with a spark from a dodgy or loose battery terminal they may never know. Plenty of boats are ticking time bombs and just need the right combination of faults to burst into flames.
