The boat was somewhat of an older boat. No telling if it was properly maintained. Inboard/outboard engines can have explosions in the engine compartment if not ventilated prior to starting. Since it did not explode at the ramp when they initially started the engine, I doubt that gas vapor accumulation was not the issue. Perhaps a fuel line or fuel pump or fuel fitting failed and flooded the engine compartment? Still need a source of ignition. The fact that they had a flat trailer tire sheds some potential light on lack of maintenance. Glad they were not hurt.

I had an older 26' woody and I was pretty thorough in my pre voyage check. 3 hours in our trip we stopped for a swim. When we got back into the boat, my 8yo son said I think I smell gas dad. Which I didn't smell but opened the dog house cover and checked all over. Sure enough a fuel line had worked loose at the filter. Not much of a flow, but could have ended up being a disaster. So you have to be on top of everything in a boat. You have to remember, you can't just get out and walk away from it. If you're at a dock, it's not just your life and boat, it's many others as well. So don't skimp on your pre trip inspection.

Smell the engine area and start the motor watching for leaks or anything out of place.
