In this video, we start a new series of jobs on the WJ Jeep. First up is this video - Motor and Transmission mounts. We replace both motor/engine mounts on a 2004 WJ Jeep 4.7l V8, as well as the transmission mount. We also show a potential problem with one of the aftermarket mounts.

Thanks for the video. It looked like it would be a royal pain but once I got in there it wasn't so bad, until trying to install the passenger mount. After a long fight and thinking I was loosing it I discovered the mount (Anchor brand) was mis-manufactured. The angle was off and the bolt holes didn't line up, about 1/8" off. I ordered another one and it was the same. Went to Autozone and got a Duralast which looks right, tomorrow will tell the tale. The driver's side went in pretty well, the holes were marginally in line and it took some tinkering to get all the bolts started. Getting the long bolt through was a pain, most likely due to the transfer case drop so the angle is changed from original.

I used DEAs for the motor, and Anchor brand for the trans mount So my Anchor trans mount was poorly cast and your Anchor motor mount wasn't right either- makes me wary of that brand going forward!

+Vortex Garage All went well with the Duralast mount on the passenger side and Anchor on the driver's. I've used many Anchors, this is the first issue I recall with them. I was able to get three of the four engine bolts with a socket, swivel, and extension on a small impact, much nicer than squeezing in there with a wrench and going one flat at a time.

What brand aftermarket mounts? Were you able to get the torque wrench on all the bolts, even the top bolts of the motor mounts?

Nice video. I wish you would have shown how you torqued those upper bolts though on the passenger side. Did you get a torque wrench in there??

I know this was many years ago but you mentioned a noise (31:55) that would be made when you shift in an out of gear. What did it sound like? Whenever I go into drive or reverse and usually as the car down shifts during deceleration, I hear a sound I can only say sounds like a riffle and bridge shuffle with a deck of cards.

Do you need to have a jack or something to hold the engine or can you just take the mounts off?
@VortexGarage

I did have a jack with some wood on it supporting the engine. Can support on the oil pan lightly. It also help you lift the motor a tad as if you are replacing worn mounts the motor may be sitting lower and need to be raised to fit the new mount.

Definitely needed yes - I will rewatch, and if missed, I'll make a follow up to cover! I definitely did use a jack w/ wood - must've just forgotten to mention as it's a fairly common requirement for a mount change like this - esp. if the mounts are worn and the engine needs to be lifted to accommodate the new/non-crushed mounts. Glad this is covered in the comments too!

By the way, the name of the video is confusing, isn't this SUV a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee? not a WJ Jeep I think.

Just buy new bushings and press them in. Cheaper, an no alignment problems because of bad castings.
