Love your content, Dr Grande. I’m a dental hygienist and worked for many years in a children’s dentist office. We accepted patients up to the age of 21. I had a patient that was on the Jerry Springer Show. She told me all about it at one of her dental appointments. She said her and her husband made contact with the show due to their rocky and outrageous relationship. They agreed to confront each other about cheating allegations on the show. Their trip was payed for and were offered more money if anyone got into a physical altercation on the show. They put on quite a performance!!! She said most of what they said was just made up. She said it was like a fully payed for vacation…. She said they had a lot of fun and their marriage was fine. Lol. So at least in her case , it was exaggerated.

I knew this woman, who was a fun of Wheel of Fortune and I had to endure it in one of my visits. Every time the wheel stopped she'd scream: "Did you see Pat put his finger on the wheel to stop it". Referring to rigging the show. I'd rolled my eyes telling her: "Dear, that much money is equivalent of Pat's lunch."

I watched the filming of his show twice when he was based in Connecticut. By far the best moment they couldn't capture on camera was Jerry sitting back in a corner as conflict broke out between his guests, and looking at the sour disappointment on his face. I will say, he did interact with the audience off camera, and he was the very first person to admit to the audience he had a stupid show. Charming, self-deprecating, and clearly quite intelligent, he earned his place as an odd icon of American pop culture.

I met Jerry Springer many times and he was one of the nicest people I’ve met. He cared about his show participants and his staff, and had a knack for names and faces. In 1995, I became a paraplegic at the age of 16. While I was in NICU and rehabilitation, I was thankful of be there instead of his show. I had therapy to relearn how to dress during the time his show was on. I was always late to speech therapy because therapist and I got distracted and bonded over the show. Lol Every time I thought I was having a bad day after that, I would turn on Jerry’s show and released my drama could be worse. In college or when I was hospitalized, I would turn it on, and friends, dorm mates, therapist, nurses, cnas or doctors would hang out with food and drinks with our own commentary or parroting with studio’s audience. Jerry’s show helped me with confidence, be appreciative of my life, bond with others, made me feel included and accepted with my disability etc. His final final thoughts helped more though. I grow up in Indiana close to Cincinnati. My family watched the channel 5 news every evening. Whether I was at my grandparents or home, Jerry Springer commentary was staple in each home. He was extremely intelligent and elegant with words. no matter where I was or condition, his words reminded me of family dinners as the adults watch news and discussed what he said. He was well respected around Cincinnati. He even testified in front of congress to lower the voting age because if men were being sent war then they had the right to vote on their representation.

I'm from the UK and Jerry Springer and Ricky Lake were a must watch for me and my friends while at secondary school in the mid-90s, we LOVED them, they were just wild!! Jerry Springer definitely was NOT banned in the UK, if it was tolerated in the US, it would have not raised hackles in the UK. What was so enjoyable about the Jerry Springer show is that you could often see his discomfort with the guests behaviour but he was always very respectful. I'm just smiling now remembering the chant 'Je-rry, Je-rry, Je-rry', and Jerry would be blushing and would often say "I don't know why you're chanting my name" 😂😂😂 RIP Jerry Springer, long after I stopped watching the show, which was 20 years ago, in the intervening years when I hear the man's name I just smile, his thought for the day was sobering and as much as I enjoyed the salaciousness of the show, an episode was not complete without Jerry's thought for the day.
@tennisfan8979

I was confused about that too - Jerry Springer was not banned here, althought I do remember him having a British version of his show that got cancelled almost immediately in the early 2000s - maybe it's that that got banned and not the American version.

The exact same format show started in UK. Poor low income families who just had beef. Always based around domestic issues and airing ppls dirty laundry. I think it collapses when a person could be so desperate to 'get back with' or have contact with sum1 they love that coming on the show was a last ditch attempt. It ended when one guest k*lled himself over a DNA test. Strange how they both ended up going down the same path. Shows u what the audience really wants...

Now, if he was portraying his guests as the pinnacle of human achievement, I would agree with you. But that's not Jerry Springer; that's TikTok, Instagram and Facebook. I was still at the university in the late 90s, and my wife (who had a job at a bank) would ask me to record the show and not watch it, so we could watch it together when she got home. We would laugh and laugh at the ridiculous stories and circumstances. It was pure trash TV, and it was perfect for the time and place, we loved it. Since then, my family doesn't watch TV programming, I guess Jerry's show hit rock bottom. It made me feel good, as if my subconscious self was saying "you may be a loser, but you're not nearly as bad as these losers". What I like best about it is the memories of watching with my wife, and rewinding the craziest moments over and over. This shouldn't technically be a great memory of our early marriage...but it is. Good evening, Dr. Grande! It is sufficient to say that, despite trying to be legit at first, his show finally appealed to people who enjoyed seeing deviant behavior displayed on tv. One needs only consider the asinine commentary of the post-menopausal hags who comprise the panel of "The View" to realize people demand low quality daytime tv. So he and his show had a bad reputation, but he was laughing all the way to the bank. And it's important to remember that the show was fake. Several relatives of mine appeared on the show, having been recruited from the studio audience to share a made-up shocking tale of woe, for which they were nicely compensated for an afternoon's work, even if they were later embarrassed when the family got to see the show. And the tattoos they drew on my grand-nieces arms and forehead with felt pens washed off in a few days. Thanks for sharing.

I loved that Christmas ca. 1997 episode of the Springer show where Jerry prepared that feast table full of Christmas delicacies, including a turkey with stuffing, and those hillbillies spent the entire episode throwing food at each other. Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!

I didn't know all that about his background. I really liked him hosting the dating show. He was very funny and entertaining. Never heard anything bad about him actually. He seemed like a great guy. Just because his show was full of trashy people doesn't mean it was his fault. They have producers and writers, I doubt he was choosing them. In any case, RIP Jerry.

I really like the fact that Jerry Springer, probably not on purpose, was a great parody of Oprah Winfrey....anyone who watched Oprah in the 80's, would know that for that decade she exploited everything and everyone on her show....then when she had her own company, and was a millionaire, she switched it to a (nice, spiritual and celebrity interviews) and became America's Guru till this day. At least Jerry was authentic.

What a lovely and eloquent video, Dr. Grande. I am glad you gave Jerry some grace. It was evident to me that he was a good man, and couldn't fight the tide of absurdity that engulfed and ultimately enriched him. And yes, he was a guilty pleasure for every walk of life, spanning all IQs. I adored the show until it became too scripted. Some of it was comedy gold. In retrospect, the show was the very essence of being human. And being human isn't always pretty, as we all know. Thank you again for your even-handedness. I always look forward to your videos.

As much as people wanna hate Jerry Springer, he really did show a truthful part of humanity. There are people out there that live their lives exactly how it was it was portrayed on the show. He’s alright with me. 😌 Btw, The clip from the commencement speech 🥺🥺 wow!

In 1999 after the birth of our youngest son, I developed severe post natal depression and insomnia. At the same time, we purchased our first home and got Sky free for 6 months. (We're in NZ). The sleeping tablets didn't do very much for sleep, so I'd be up late and I accidentally came across The Jerry Springer Show on Sky. I was gobsmacked and horrified. However, I said to my husband the next morning, "I am mentally ill right now, but those people are sick!" ... I at least felt better that I wasn't causing my own misery. (not judging people - I get that all sorts of things contribute to these things). I only watched it about 6 times when at my lowest and quickly became bored. Now, the thought of it just makes me sad. OH - DR G!!!! Made me laugh out loud mentioning the Kardashians. I've not seen their show. Thanks again for a clear and thoughtful sum up.

@Bunny Mad, Hello New Zealand friend 👋. I am sorry that you suffered from post partum depression. Ironic, a show so absurd and nauseating got ppl through some really tough times... Your PPD, people that were home from school/work sick and miserable in bed, post surgery patients, ppl coming off a break up in a relationship, ppl that wanted misery to have company. In a super strange way which is odd to put into actual words, it seems that the Jerry Springer show was uplifting people in some of their darkest days and getting them through the rough patches. Who knew!?? Lol To bad Jerry couldn't have seen all of these messages before he died. Maybe he wouldn't have carried such shame around with him. 😞 Hope you're having a very happy and wonderful life!
