Loose soil is beneficial. Keeping slugs at bay as well. And if the frost gets to them then chop em back immediately. Mulching is also beneficial...as seen here. Not too much sunlight...certainly not heavy exposure to it around midday.

Your garden is lovely! I really like the combinations you have put together and love that you included most of the names. I inherited 1 hosta (-name un known- large plain med. green puckered leaves & light purple blooms-if you have any ideas, LOL) when I moved in it was about 2' across x 1.5' tall and now is about 6' across x 2.5' tall 4 years later. it was my inspiration to start a hosta garden and now I have close to 50 with room for more. what are your favorite sources for your hostas? I find ordering online is pretty expensive for the size you get but locally there just isn't much variety.
@dudley08264 жыл бұрын
For an ID post a pic on the houzz hosta forum, you'll get an answer. I've never ordered a hosta online, I like to see the plant before I buy. I like Tree Valley garden center in Stouffville. There are also a number of speciality hosta sellers within an hour of me. I'm out of room now (just shy of 100) I'm actually looking to decrease the number of cultivars I have. I'm getting too crowded. Enjoy your plants.

Hello. I just love your Hosta garden!! You mention Canadian Tire, what province are you in. I’m in AB. Zone 4. So harsh winters. Lots of -40 and some -50 dips. I’m hoping some hardy Hostas will work for me. I have a North facing back yard I can plant lots in. And also a north east side wall with morning sun until around 1330 then it’s all shade. Any recommendations please on varieties you think will work for me? I have 2 PW Shadowland Diamond Lake. And a few others just labeled ‘hosta’ lol thanks Home Depo. Cheers!
@dudley08264 жыл бұрын
Hostas will do fine in zone 4. Really its whatever you like. Alot of the older varieties are more durable than the newer more derived cultivars. Some of my more vigorous favorites are Atlantis, Luna Moth, Goodness Gracious there are many others.

All "white" hostas ( white feather being the most common) start out white in the spring. But green up as the season progresses. They have to, as they need the chlorophyll to grow.

All it takes is time, water, decent soil, and a few shade trees. It's not expensive. But you have to be patient. 8 years ago when I moved here there was nothing but weeds and an old plastic kids playset. 15 yards of triple mix and 6 trees ( all less than 50.00) plus several years of hosta buying, and this is the result. I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. I did this pretty cheaply.
@brendalee28964 жыл бұрын
Your hosts are beautiful. It's so obvious how you care for them. I certainly don't have as many as you do but I have a few. One time I was asked why I didn't add color in my hosta garden. My hostas to me are a way of letting my eyes and smells take a brake to sooth my thoughts. Wow..my sum and substance hosta is so big this year! Enjoyed your tour.

@@brendalee2896 Yes, hosta gardens are very peaceful. It's a very tropical look in temperate gardens. S&S is a real giant. I think most people dont realize how big it gets when they buy a one gallon pot at the nursery. Thanks for the kind words.
