Imagine if Lex Fridman did Chris Voss, and Jordan did Kanye West.... Lex was the only one who I've seen do well drawing out Kanye, to show he has some serious awareness of major league abusive predators in the music industry (some the same as Macklemore et al call out), but that he has some serious possible mixed organic and education gaps stunted intellectual development, very awkward in a creative guy whose mind is racing otherwise. As such, many of the public accusations against Kanye were frauds, with political and religious underpinnings if not propaganda to prop up crimes against humanity, in ways corporate marketing tries to make profitable. Talk about fertile ground for trying to negotiate around serious crimes, worse than an odd hostage scenario.... This interview with Chris is well done, because much of the negotiation issues discussed are process skills, whereas English language is better suited for discussions of crystal knowledge.

I am a procurement professional with 44 years of experience at a Fortune 500 company. I can tell you unapologetically that my negotiating skills are honed to a point where I thrive in the same environments others are extremely uncomfortable. I never thought about it, but I agree that purchasing/procurement professionals would make good hostage negotiators. For me, the key has been compromise and acknowledgement of effort. If I am willing to give a little in one area, and then ultimately succeed at the end goal and offer appreciation to the supplier, I have their loyalty forever. I will get what I need in urgent times because I have fostered the relationship through compromise and negotiation. I have told a supplier that they did NOT receive a particular project and made them feel GOOD about it. BTW, if a buyer is calling demanding a price cut at the end of a quarter, that request is coming from the Finance department crying for cost savings at the end of a crappy quarter. A "no" answer is all they need. If you give any concessions, the purchasing person looks bad to Finance and others. Their question will undoubtedly be asked "why didn't he negotiate that savings earlier? Why did it take us to ask?"

I've watched a lot of Chris Voss videos recently because I'm trying to convince somebody to sell me something. This is the first host who seems ACTUALLY interested in learning and understanding what Chris is teaching and not just nodding and agreeing with everything he says (man, some of them are so bootlicker/condescending and hard to watch). Jordan seem like he's truly interested in using this info and not just having Chris on for the sake of pushing out another youtube video. The result is lots of new info here (particularly as related to psychology of the opposing party) rather than the same talking points as other videos.... I really appreciate this one.

I’ve watched several videos with Chris, I have to say to the interviewer job well done. With this particular interview compared to all the others any missed a Wass answers the questions with more relative ease in a little less of peg than usual. I own property, and sometimes I feel like a hostage negotiator or a diplomat. I’m currently going through a situation that is in the same row of the strategic power differential between the tenant and the owner. Chris demonstrates how using simple methods, like getting the person to say no, or getting the person to a place where you want them to be end we need the skills because unfortunately court or whatever the orever dire the situation may be or not for a particular situation. A lot of the stuff comes into play in life in an every day interactions. Particularly with people from the North East. This was one of the best interviews I have ever watched- I think it’s actually a masterpiece. I was hesitant about reading his book before end I was trying to figure out perhaps he had an angle. However, his transparency in this video had me riveted and I watched it twice. I may even perhaps buy the audiobook. The interviewer did a great job. Psychological profiling and understanding yourself and other peoples needs are so important but you’re so lacking. This is not just for hostage negotiation - this is practical in every day life.

When I was a purchasing agent, I was always very careful not to crush the vendors that relied on my business. That was an attitude imparted on me by my boss. So while I won't argue the point broadly, I will say that not all buyers are assertive types. Knowing that I have a good relationship with my vendor and that they'll bend over backwards for me makes more financial sense. I can browbeat the sales rep into cutting the price of a part by $.50 a box, and cool, I've saved a few bucks. But when our manufacturing department forgets to scrap out parts and suddenly I need that vendor to cut someone else's production run and run my part instead, that saves tens of thousands in lost production. An adversarial relationship with a vendor will cost more in the long run than letting them pad the margins a bit. I'm not saying you let them rake you over the coals, just that it pays to be a little flexible.

@@JordanHarbingerShow I only just found out about your show through searching for interviews with Chris. I tend to only binge 2 things at once and right now I'm on Chris and UG Krishnamurti- The anti-guru. I'll probably check your stuff out after that. Wish you the best!

I worked for an environmental activist network doing door to door solicitation and did the best out of the 4 other newbys they had. I think its mainly because 1. I only used part of hte script that felt right and natural for me me(and I thought would resonate with them) and 2. I would lead with things like "I realize its cold out and you probably don't want to stand around talking to me with your door open but..."

@@buzzkill808raven2 environmental activist? Your name fits perfectly. 😆
@buzzkill808raven23 жыл бұрын
@@picknpull8888 you could have responded in so many ways yet you chose to say that...interesting. You do realize that if you value things like drinkable water and breathable air, you have only environmental activists to thank, right?! Your name is fitting, because you need to pick n pull your head out of your ass

34:57 19 times... I learned that when I worked at a Radio Station... A commercial needed to be heard 19 times, for a person to really "Get It". ... IF a person is not engaged ... shorter if they're listening. You just can't "Tell" somebody... That is why in the Film Industry.. they say: "Show... Don't Tell" ... no one likes to listen or watch a "Talking Head".

“How?” -a powerful word in negotiating Book: The culture code By Daniel k. Mid 20-early 30s most focused on self, and hardest for them to negotiate Look for 1. Pronouns 2. Key words 3. Future words 4. Specific types of losses 5. How their calculation of losses affects their vision of the future 6. Optimistic of future, easier to negotiate, because they are more resilient 7. What’s driving you now? What are you afraid of losing? 8. Turn down negatives, and turn up positives 9. Figure out their “yes” questions, and the get them to say “no”, so they feel in control. 10. “Is it ridiculous to think this might work for you?” No, but here are the problems. “Will this work for you?” Leaves the person stuck thinking they only have yes/no. When they say “no” here are the problems. Now, when you fix the problems, you are meeting their needs, creating connections and understanding, and then once the problems are cleared, they want the deal as well.

This was a great interview @Jordan Harbiner, because you did get him into other fascinating topics, which was nice, since the other topics, like emotions and other aspects of brain function were ideas I had never heard Voss explore. Also, I liked that he (or seemed to be) subtly catching you on your not having read the book, or maybe not the whole book. Several time you'd ask him something and he'd say "It's in the book. In the book we talk about... " That made me giggle a little bit.
