This week in order to get our hot air and water with heat exchangers we need to install the Glycol/Coolant loop system together into its compact little spot in or FOUR SEASON VAN named ROAMR.
This complete system that we purchased from www.rixens.comwas very expensive, but long term practicality, only needing one fuel source for everything in the van and the compactness of fitting the whole system under our fridge location was a no brainer for my custom build.
Hope you enjoyed the video, please COMMENT AND LIKE below, maybe even Hit that subscribe button to follow along as we convert this Mercedes Sprinter van that we call ROAMR into a 4X4 Four Season Van in which we plan to travel the continent with.. You will see all the ups and downs to a full build as I share mistakes, wins and everything in between.
Thank you for watching and we will see you on the next video.

Don't use those twist connectors on vehicle electrics. They are crap in a house and come loose. Use WAGO connectors. Fire waiting to happen. Not sure why you would want to to have filtered hot drinking water? I would just put the filter Inline to the cold supply to the taps. I have a plate heat exchanger which is incorporated into the coolant system of the van. This allows me to preheat the van in the winter and aids cold starting. Much simpler and cheaper to do. Nice build and well presented.

Not sure if you fixed this or not but the expansion tank needs to be flushed where the full line is with the top of the tank. This way you can actually use the tank to know when its low. This is how my Aquahot system is setup at the factory.

Jeff. Great series of videos. I watched every one in about 10 days. I applaud your enthusiasm. I am hoping that your videos continue after the build is completed. It would be GREATLY interesting to learn what worked well, what didn't work as you hoped, etc., as you put the van into use on the road. This could be even more valuable than the build information. Thanks for what you have done so far.

Hey super happy you are enjoying the series... Honestly that is the part I am most excited about as well. I really looking forward to using all these products installed into ROAMR then creating and sharing those "did it work" videos. I will then be able to spend more of my time doing what I love which is editing, creating and camping instead of building and researching... But this is still creating and is a necessary task to achieve the end goal. Thank you for watching and commenting!

Nice and tidy install. Small upgrade: If you stick a three-way manifold after the furnace you can create three mini' closed loops - therefore, isolating and/or closing any combination of shower/domestic/fan heat exchangers as you wish (i.e. exchangers are in parallel). More efficient as you only heat elements you need. I have solenoid valves at manifold connections to control. My domestic water heater is in a small storage tank (calorifier) which has twin exchangers - allows water to be also heated by engine coolant whilst driving through another closed with another exchanger under the hood. so driving a lot, I find that I rarely use the diesel heater to heat domestic (sink) hot water (so can close that loop). Also can heat the whole van while driving without using Diesel heater new to your channel - I'm enjoying the content

Great video! One problem I see is that during the summer when you are heating water the hot air radiator will get hot, and even w/o the fan running, will put heat into an already hot van. You need to have a bypass around the radiator for summer use. Keep up the good work.

Garo Dakessian good call, it is something I though of as well. Rixens assured me this is not an issue. I will see how it goes, luckily it would be easily modified to exactly what you are saying if this does prove to be an issue. I will definitely provide an update video on that particular thing once we are travelling if it becomes a problem!
@functionalvanconversion4284

Great point! We do have this issue especially since the tank is aluminum and dissipates heat very well. Fortunately we like taking cool showers when it's hot, so its not a problem.
@FoxtrotGear

Heat will rise so as long as the lines don't run directly up from the heat exchange you won't get much of a thermal siphoning effect. Adding a couple loops would probably eliminate most of the thermal siphoning.

I don't think your plan for a secondary expansion/holding tank will work. The small barbed relief fitting, on the filler neck, is behind the pressure relief on the expansion tank making it a one way fitting/valve. Also the secondary tank is below the main tank so no gravity feed and no pump was installed. I think what you have is a simple overflow collection tank. No return.
@DaresDrives
@DaresDrives 3 жыл бұрын
Jim Dearborn it works off the water pressure and the spring inside the expansion tank cap, no ball valve. Main goal is to have a safe place for it to vent without dripping inside the van. That was accomplished. An Added benefit is that it should work just like your car in which due to water/air pressure not gravity the fluid can pass either direction and will eliminate air pockets while doing so. Either way the main goal of “off venting” will go into the back up tank and not on the floor. Thanks for watching and provided input, greatly appreciated.

@@DaresDrives I’m in the midst of an Espar hydronic install and about 50 steps behind you. I also don’t get the physics behind the 2nd coolant tank. As the coolant expands and contracts from temp change, won’t the water pressure increase and cause issues without a true air vent on the 1st coolant tank?
@DaresDrives
@DaresDrives 3 жыл бұрын
treynacioustee I appreciate the input and is an interesting point. My thought process comes from an automobile that when you have a radiator that expands and contracts you provide a tank that it can feed into with a certain amount of fluid in. This prevents air from entering when it is contracting by sucking the coolant in instead of air, and the opposite it offers a canister for the fluids to enter when it is expanding instead of losing it on the ground. This is also the same process that happens that helps ensure proper fluid level from the separate container, hence the hot and the cold fill lines. I am also confident the canister chosen is more than large enough that it could not create enough pressure to affect anything. Off memory I think the tank was max 50-60psi so venting would be very low PSI.
@carlredmond3642
@carlredmond3642 9 ай бұрын
But in the automotive examples you describe...also found on motorcycles, the expansion tank is higher up than the main radiator body...not the case here

Nice job and video. I installed this system a few years ago and you did a better job on both the video and install. We ended up filtering our shower water also as you absorb more toxic stuff through your skin than your mouth since kidneys and liver don't get a chance to remove stuff as it hits your pores (correct me if I am wrong). I finally got caught up Jeff! So hitting the notification bell now. :-) I find your dual water system interesting, but I think I'll go simpler with a single system. I tell you though, I'm thinking about a good stout Lithium Ion Phosphate battery / solar panel system with the addition of alternator charging and shore power connection. With that I'm thinking of a conventional 6 - 10 gallon 115vAC electric only hot water heater with an on/off switch. Figure any kind of driving will heat up the hot water for my (solo) needs, the solar can help to keep the hot water hot once parked, and anytime I have shore power available I'll have plenty of hot water then as well. One concern I do have is the durability since I don't figure there are any electric-only units designed for the rock & roll + vibrations of a van. But I think a compliant mounting would mitigate that problem. Anyway, keep up the top-shelf super high quality videos you've been producing. I and others are really enjoying them! (Thanks!)

Going with two different systems could save money and time up front. Long term value with this set up is only relying on Diesel that I already have to lug around for the van, having on demand hot water instead of heating a hot water tank and never worrying about having propane inside the living area or having to refill propane all the time are all massive perks to this system!! Hello (I understand your name is) Jeff, a word of caution to this very well designed and executed system. The use of a heat exchanger puts you at risk of contaminating the "drinking water" side of things with the chemicals present in regular coolant (antifreeze). Although plate exchangers are robust and build to last you don't want to run the risk of digesting contaminated water. The results can be quite damaging to your health, particularly to the kidneys which confronted with enough of the glycol chemical will shut down never to start up again. So please (oh shit I just sound like a safety Nancy) be careful with glycol based coolants. There is though a special food safe coolant available but it is pricey stuff... Please see if your water filter removes glycol if the filtered circuit heat exchanger has a failure of some kind...

Just discovered this channel. Loads of interesting stuff. Maybe I'm missing something here - what's the point of this system if it's gonna be using the heat from the diesel heater, and not from the engine to heat the glycol and then air and water??? You might as well use a simpler system like Bobyl. I thought there's actually a system that heats air and water and subflooring using the glycol from the engine.

Jeff. Did you consider putting another heat exchanger connected to the cooling system of the Mercedes engine, which would allow you to heat the water while driving? Maybe have a 4 to 5 gallon hot water tank that can be heated with the diesel furnace, or, heated with the engine coolant heat, that way when you stop driving, you have a certain quantity of hot water waiting for you.

I am commenting on this because I saw in this video that the wood base of the heat radiator was glued to the floor and the aluminum structure, making disassembly difficult, what you could have done was to attach it with the angle brackets to the 80/20 profile itself. a question: why did you choose the diesel heater instead of the gas heater? what will be the system to run your refrigerator, electric or gas? a detail in your heating scheme: isn't an outlet for the shower in red? just a few comments, from those who are very interested in your beautiful work. hugs (sorry for my english, i'm brazilian and i'm living in portugal, where i intend to convert a van) TKS

João Lima hey thanks for watching and commenting Lots to address here. As for a traffic accident that is a worse case scenario and will be insured to reflect some of the issues your addressed. As for glueing or screwing the fan base is a very valid point and I debated this a lot. My fear was being a fan that if you give it room to vibrate..... it will. The fan can still be removed with the four screws so not really a concern. You could break the glued base and replace if needed. Diesel heat was chosen because my sprinter runs off diesel so was the available fuel source on board. Hope I answered your questions, good luck on your build and your current location is my goal destination once the build is complete if travel like that is possible again!

Hey bud I have the same diesel heater in 24 volt but I'm looking to go full-time in the van.I'm hoping to utilise around 800 watts solar on the roof but now that I see the power draw on your heat exchanger ,that may not be possible.Can the diesel heater be used just for hot air without the water system?

Stellar videos man! I've been wanting to do a single heat-source dual purpose install in my tiny trailer SO bad, been trying to rig one of those portable propane water heaters to do this job but it's turning out to be a tad challenging as the output isn't enough to provide hot enough water to heat both water and the interior, so I am attempting to modify the sucker to make it more efficient. IF THAT FAILS, I am going to consider one of these units. Do you think the 4kw models would be plenty to heat water and warm a small space? I mean, that translates to like 12k BTU's of energy, that sounds like plenty!
@DaresDrives
@DaresDrives 3 жыл бұрын
stevey500 not sure how big your trailer is but 4K will pump out a lot of heat. Especially if you insulate properly so it can retain the heat. Thanks for watching.

Looks awesome!! Could you just use one heat exchanger and run both shower and hot water via a T fitting? Also, how does the fridge copes with having that hot glycol tank beside it?

Thank you ... I'm about to install the same system and you are the only one here on KZbin who described and made it easy to understand. One question about the Blower ... if you would like to redirect some hot air into your shower/Bathroom .. is there any chance to do that? Thanks and looking forward for the next video. Greeting from Switzerland

have some questions, is there any method that when coolant heats up, it hot coolant shoots up and heats water while the relative cool coolant is sent down to the rad and loop continues? without need of pump on coolant and only pump is needed for water only. Thanks for the videos.
@DaresDrives
@DaresDrives 3 жыл бұрын
They are two separate coolant loops for heater and engine heating... It uses the pump to circulate heater coolant through under mounted exchanger which heats up the heater coolant when engine is running... Hope this helps answer your questions. Thanks for watching!

Is the comfort hot expansion tank mandatory?
@DaresDrives

Yes, this is where the coolant is able to expand while heating and the cap provides a venting point to avoid building too much pressure in the lines. Thanks for watching and commenting.

NO PROPANE in all caps. Why is propane such a bad word in van videos these days? Lithium ion batteries can bring down jetliners and Teslas as do electrical fires in general. A Webasto heater will kill you too if not properly installed. The government recently released a statement that it can take up to 20 tanker fire trucks full of water to put out one lithium ion battery fire in a car where is it only takes one tanker to put out a regular car battery fire.
@jlcain100
@jlcain100 2 жыл бұрын
Its a bad word for several reasons. The propane Must be kept outside of the vehicle and not in the living space. Alos all the divices that use propane no must alos be vented outside. Another consideration is fill of the propane. If its a mounted tank you now have to find a filling station to fill your propane. It also seems to always run out at 1 am. If its used for an interior heat or cooking it puts a lot of water in the air. The lithium batteries are actually very safe, most fires come from cheap toy batteries like hoverboards there are millions of them in use and only small number catch on fire.
