I started 5 Months ago with a used cart after watching Ben's videos and doing a ton of research for Months before that. I have made enough now to buy a used 2011 Ford E150 Van to tow the cart, stow all the stuff like my tables and coolers and what not as well as extra sodas, chips, etc., but I honestly wish I'd bought a cart 20 plus years ago instead of killing myself working 50 plus hours at my other jobs over the years. I make more money than I ever have, and it's increasing weekly, and I work about 4-5 hours a day. You can't beat that! I'm still working 6 days a week only because I'm greedy and want to make more money to expand more, but to be honest I can work 3 or 4 days a week and easily pay my bills and be happy. Thank you Ben and to you too Dan for your videos and insight! I wouldn't be where I am now without either of you guys ... many thanks!

Most people would have quit finding out about the other vendor in your district, but you thought outside the box and got your dream up and running. Inspiring stuff. Subscribed! Ben Wilson is from Tennessee and has a great KZbin channel and a book that started me out slinging dogs, called "Hot Dogs Saved My Life." Very informative.

Great info, I used to lease a cart when I was in college and sat right outside a bar on friday and saturday nights. I've been settled into my career for a while and ready to go back to slinging dogs. It payed my way through college and I always had cash on hand. I've been looking at carts as of late.

Swimming pool service is also a great side hustle. I teach and run 30 pools. The service side is the monthly bread and butter; the jobs that come up are the icing on the cake. Drains, acid washes, filter replacement, motors etc. I just finished patching and painting a deck today and cleared $1600 profit in 7 hours, 1 day. Have to be able to deal with weather elements though.

Permits are always the sticking point. And it can be very hard to get a straight answer from the city, or state for that matter. Liquor licenses are not transferrable except when an establishment is sold. Good for this guy for tracking things down, offering a business deal to the permit holder. So the permit holder makes money just sitting at home watching netflix.

I grew up in Indiana and while in college at IU (late 80's) I worked at Kilroys and one of our Sunday regulars was a group of guys who ran hot dog carts outside of the bars. One of the guys started the business by himself and grew it into multiple carts. I always looked up to him for having the stones to stake out a spot and grow it. Your videos remind me of that time and I like your perspective on business. Keep it up.

dan I love how you explained just keep it simple, your HUGE menu was regular dog or jumbo dog, plain and simple! don't make it complicated. Once again thanks for your great ideas simple and honest advice.! BTW which dog cart did you purchase from Ben's Carts? or are you still just leasing to stay in that district? can't wait for the bar to reopen and you pump out more videos! As you can tell you got me hooked on dogs LOL

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy the videos! I can't wait to get back to it and start posting more vids. Stay tuned. Once the bar opens, I'll be pumping out 2 videos every week. I use the leased cart for now. I spoke with Ben about getting his Big Dog Cart, but the only way I would be able to use it would be if the company that has the district where I set up were to get it permitted under their company, and I would still have to pay them to operate under their permit, so I just can't justify the cost of buying a cart right now. I do still plan to get a Big Dog cart, but I will have to work out the logistics with the city of taking over the district where the bar is at after the permit expires for the company that im currently working under which isn't until the end of 2021.

Hello Dan, I recently have been looking into opening my own hot dog cart as a trial run until I open a food truck. I'm curious on your menu and what you charge customers for drinks, chips, big dogs vs regular dogs and also how you go about of charging tax in your area and what you do at the end of the year when tax time comes around. Congratulations on your business and I wish you great success!!!

There used to be a hot dog cart outside the Foxy Lady strip club in Providence Rhode Island. They reached an agreement with the club and made a fortune every night. Italian sausage, bratwurst, polish dogs, beef dogs. But they also had a grill and cooked up onions and peppers. I don't recommend that. For simplicity just go with steamed dogs, chips, sodas. Chili is an easy add on, as well as some cheese for chili cheese dogs

@HotDoggingwithDan

Thanks for watching! Thats completely up to you and your situation. Just starting out, I approach all of my business ventures with the mindset of getting started with as little money as possible. Leasing a cart from another vendor works for me right now because if I had my own cart and my own permit, It would just be sitting because I wouldnt be able to use it to work where I want to work (in front of this bar).... If I had 3 or 4 other locations that I could work that were outside of the "downtown district" area where the locations are assigned, i would definitely have one of Ben's Big Dog Carts. I personally wouldn't get a trailer, but only because here in my city, they are regulated differently and held to more strict codes by the health department. They are basically treated as restaurants rather than mobile food vendors, which means they have to meet a lot more requirements to get approved, whereas an open food cart just has a few requirements to meet, but are fairly lax when it comes to regulations and requirements (think ventilation, hoods, etc...). I can't tell you what would be best for your business, but it pays to keep it simple. I'd suggest reaching out to Ben from Ben's carts (Hot Dog Cart Store). Hes an awesome guy, and he knows the laws and codes of almost every state, so he could certainly point you in the right direction. Good Luck!!
