Hot Shot FR3: Marketing Run Amuck
In this video I detail my 12,000 mile test of Hot Shot Secret FR3 Oil Additive. I had this testing going on for over a year and noticed that ‪@themotoroilgeek‬ uploaded a video recently testing oil additives. I'm not disputing anything he said in his video in fact, I have data from my test that backs up exactly what he said in his video. It just so happened that we were doing the same type of testing at the same time and I'll be honest, this testing is lightyears better than what mine is.
Check out ‪@themotoroilgeek‬ 's video here: • If You LOVE One Of The...
The Hot Shot Secret FR3 oil additive had no tangible benefit to using it over straight motor oil alone. Hot Shot Secret's slogan is "Powered by Science" well after conducting some science... Their marketing department must be powered by BS instead.

Entirely depends on what the engine has been through and how it was maintained. Mowers aren't a good gauge. I've had brand new mowers blow up in one season, and a free, crappy looking toro last years. If a engine is down on compression and smoking, restore can slow down oil consumption, and increase compression. But only if it's ring seal issue. If it's already worn out, and you need an engine anyway, how can you attribute it to the additive? Was the rod bearing seized before you changed the oil? Was it down on power because the piston was hanging in the cylinder? Was a valve spring broken and bleeding compression, until it decided to play patty cake with the piston? I use restore because I know it works, but I'm also realistic and understand if I'm using it, there is a chance the motor is already gone at 250,000 miles. But if it saves me from replacing it this year, and I can wait until next year.....it's worth it.
@cb84capri
@cb84capri Ай бұрын
@@ryurc3033 down on power due to ring seal, cylinder walls were smooth and yes it drank a little oil. Oil was checked and added prior to every use. Engine was run in that state for a couple years, decided to try restore because of project farms testing and had nothing to lose because engine was not worth my time to rebuild. It was a B&S opposed twin 2. I don't believe that it was a coincidence the additive killed it in short order, I felt more heat coming from the engine than usual when it let go, and didn't knock until seconds before. It usually took me 3 hours to cut my lawn, and it only ran 1 hour with fresh oil and restore added prior to mowing. If you like the stuff that's fine, I did not have a great experience on a very basic engine.

Over the decades (yeah, I'm in my 70's) I used many oil additives and decided they were not beneficial. However, there is one product that has proven itself over the years as a safe engine cleaner and as a fuel additive, that product is Marvel Mystery Oil. If you have an engine that is gummed up inside and has a valve knock MMO can buy you some time. Notice I did not say "fix" the problem and that is because it does not fix an engine that has been abused. As a fuel additive especially in small engines however it has been a game changer because it is an upper cylinder lubricant. Example: I have a riding mower approaching 1,000 hours of hard use and it runs today as good as it did when new. MMO has been used the whole time. If you want your vehicle engine to last 200,000+ miles (all of mine do) then change your oil and filter frequently (3,000 to 5,000 miles) and its air filter at the same time. Example: I had a 1985 Dodge Ramcharger with a 318 V-8 and 249,000 miles on it. It ran like new when I sold it and other than normal "tune-ups" and normal "maintenance " I did not have to do "anything" else to the vehicle (never even had a valve cover off of it.

Amen. Only difference is there oil companies have to find a balance between cost and performance. Any one or them could formulate the best oil in the world, but the average consumer would not be able to afford it. That being said, there is a lot of chemistry and engineering put into engine oils. It's a cure for a problem which doesn't exist. Marketing at it's best.

Really good review and great info. Good job overall. As far s your wear metals it appears you are using the wrong motor oil. The current diesel standard of CK-4 for example was insufficient for Ford as they saw increased wear so they had to develop an additional standard which basically called for more phosphorous. The zing also looks low in the pennzoil however I don't know what your specific engine calls for. I'd try looking into the specs on the manufacturers oil for your vehicle and go from there. You made a great point about the R&D resources at Penn vs Hotshot and the same goes for the manufacturer of your engine. They recommend a specific oil for a reason and I'm talking about their branded formulated oil not just the CK-4 standard. Just food for thought. Your conclusions about oil additives is spot on and I love the oil geek content as well. THere might be a decent additive that might make a positive difference but it's a crap shoot at best. Nothing like running your own science experiment in your expensive truck...lol

I don't understand why someone hasn't done this type of testing sooner. I guess it's just one of those things that's like "why didn't we think of that sooner?" What testing Project Farm has done on them has been pretty much the same, except the lubricity testing he did on the engine seal additives. Most showed higher wear which of course was alarming, but two showed decreased wear. Of course that wasn't on engine bearings, but one might assume it would apply there too. Maybe engine bearings are so "soft" they can't be mimicked by anything else, and thus you guys' testing wins out? I don't know but I appreciate this. I was really sold on one of these (Lucas) and have been using them for seal conditioning and noise reduction on some high mileage engines (which are already in critical wear states). The truth hurts sometimes, but it shows you where you actually are and need to go from there, instead of covering up the real problem and giving you worse surprises later.

The only thing I'll say about PF's wear testing is, he doesn't replicate the temperature of the oil in an engine for the wear test. He also tested the FR3 additive about 5 years ago and found a reduction in wear using it. But his wear test wasn't in an engine. He does a Timken style test, which I don't think is relevant to what goes on inside an engine. I think this is how hot shot claims a 43% reduction in wear, the test they did wasn't in an engine. They also don't specify a 43% reduction vs oil alone. I'm wondering if they ran a test with no oil, ran a 2nd test WITH oil and claim a reduction in wear...
@jamesplotkin4674
@jamesplotkin4674 Ай бұрын
@@RepairGeek Wouldn't the Timken bearing be similar in hardness as the lobes of a camshaft? Did you also notice that Lake Jr. blew right past the LiquiMoly MOS2 additive results in his oil analysis? Yes, it added Moly, but he didn't say whether it was good, or bad.
@RepairGeek

@@jamesplotkin4674 the last mass produced flat tappet engine was the 06 Jeep/AMC 4.0 as far as I'm aware. I could be wrong. So you're talking about an engine that hasn't been produced by the factory in about 20 years. No flat tappet cam sits in a puddle of oil and spins like a timken test. In the vast majority that I'm familiar with, the oil is slung off the spinning crank onto the cam lobes. And it still doesn't bring up the lack of heat during his test. I don't question Todd's results at all. I question how relevant his test is to the inside of an engine. That's all.

I came to comment that exactly. And sometimes, you can audibly hear the difference because there’s less friction. I’ve ran amsoil over the past few years and I’ve been sold because I gain mpg, get long intervals safely, and it gets quieter. I did some hotshots secret stiction eliminator in my tdi at 70k miles and a work truck Cummins which definitely doesn’t get any love. Both of them had a lot more turbo noise that I never heard, which would be from less friction. Hotshots secret EDT and Diesel Extreme also have done wonders on my TDI and my sisters TDI, where as advertised it removed her dpf filter light, which she had for thousands of miles. Fr3 might lubricate more than you’d notice, as it’s basically listed. And just because people don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t doing something. One thing I notice from oils is 100% synthetic oils don’t shear and last longer, while being quieter. People can say whatever, that’s my experience from 5 vehicles and my lawn mower(which doesn’t get mpg’s lol).

I believe molybdenum disulfide can improve wear, particularly in some circumstances. It makes your oil black so its unlikely to be in any oil, however it has been used in the past in aviation and military uses. Anyway, nowadays wear in your engine is the least of your worries. Expensive exhaust treatment and intake components are of far greater concern, followed closely by the degradation of plastic parts inside the engine, gaskets, and seals.
@SolarMillUSA
@SolarMillUSA Ай бұрын
Molybdenum disulfide is excellent for sliding wear but can potentially be detrimental to rolling wear. The challenge in engines is you have both. Additionally, with an oil you really depend on the design of the bearing clearances to maintain film thickness and following the recommended viscosity and weight is critical. Different engines have different clearance designs. Moly is great for high pressure applications, especially for greases in places that see intermittent movement (like a driveshaft spline), where it is hard to build a consistent oil film.

I’ve only used an additive well-tested by BITOG- the now-defunct LC20 from Lube Control. It doesn’t make bold claims and marketed mostly to fleets. It’s mostly hydroxynone in a carrier oil and it reduces oxidation and has a mild cleaning effect. The engines are in superb condition as verified by compression tests, blowby, and borescope. Alas, the company is out of business (probably because they didn’t make bold enough claims, LOL).

It actually can and does yield 5%. Did you now small engines are able to free up power easier. A larger engine doesn’t show it as well. Also, the penzoil being higher than hot shot means nothing. You and the Geek are smaller and have more R&D apparently. So just make claims of it worked and didn’t and here’s the data. Don’t blanket statements with all engines and set ups. Good video

Here is an easy way to make a "dyno" result look good in your favor when doing A-B comparisons. Cold differential oil can cause a 9-12 hp loss compared to hot differential oil. So you can get at least a 9 hp advantage if you do the dyno test with hot differential oil and this can be skewed to favor your results. This was often a trick used by "cold air intake" manufacturers to show how their intake makes a substantial difference over the stock intake.

I was skeptical, until project farm did his testing including hotshots EDT, which blew everyone else out of the water. Their fuel side is certainly legit as it fixed my sisters dpf light, which after diesel extreme fixed it because not doing anything didn’t fix it. She started using EDT and Diesel Extreme then it went away. I will always do something for diesel fuel because it’s so dry and if your HPFP goes out that’s a lot more than one ounce of EDT per fill up. I’ve used Hotshots Stiction eliminator, two not mine and one mine, with one making much more turbo noise in the Cummins without the recommended amount. My TDI also makes more turbo noise than prior, but I mixed that with Amsoil Euro, which if there’s any oil that’s the best it’s amsoil by alot. But, I digress because you might not see “the return” you like but even this fr3 did show positive change, I.e. the tbn was alot higher.

The study you read is performed by Firepunk Diesel, as it says in the front page. It is not done by the manufacturer of the additive, they just paid for them to do it. The comments on the study are from Firepunk diesel and only reflect to their own small testing, so they are not related in any way to the manufacturers claims on the product page. Other than that, I do agree on the conclusion that a small company making an additive that is somehow supposed to make oils from huge companies better than they can do, is ridiculous. It _may_ have an effect when the engine is already worn out of spec, a condition that a normal engine oil is not made for, so it may have some benefits for some amount of time. But even then, tha'ts not what they are claiming, they are just flat out claming that it makes oil better. And the two studies on their page, on the Cummins and Harley, neither makes any mention at all about engine condition (compression etc) or which and how old oil was in them.

One thing on UOA...it's not a tool to compare oil to oil or additives etc. Wear metal rates are engine driven and will likely not vary much oil to oil. Folks want so badly to be able to see changes related to "which product is best" using UOA but it's the wrong tool. I've done dozens on the same vehicle over many years/'000s with different oils with no real statistical difference in wear metal rates (need to look at them as /'000 not absolute).
