WILD Heads Up GASSER Drag Racing - Southeast Gassers Return to Brainerd

It's been several years since the Southeast Gassers Association raced at my home track, Brainerd Motorsports Park, but they returned as the season opening race in 2024. This event was PACKED with people...they were bussing them in from surrounding parking areas and squeezing into the stands to watch heads up, real deal gassers do battle on the historic drag strip. The action was wild with lots of wheels up launches, and crazy runs. As usual, I was splitting my time, shooting photos for a magazine coverage, and taking video when I had the chance.
This video certainly doesn't cover ALL of the highlights from the Southeast Gassers Association return to Brainerd, so stay tuned as more coverage comes out from PowerTubeTV and the Southeast Gassers KZbin channel. This is 12 minutes of RAW action from the 2024 season opener.

Wow! Great video! My neighbor had an early Falcon gasser he drove on the street around 1965. He was nuts and would run around driving over stop signs until he punctured his oil pan at the end of our road. The trail of oil lead right to his parents' house. The cops got him. Those days were wild!

@@HotRodHoarder thanks for watching. I have in the past filmed nearly every category but that is a long day at SEGA with leaving storylines of the people on the cutting room floor. Decided to just focus on A/Gas this time and got to go in the pits and get the scoop. I didn't get to any last year with the CHOAS and NHRA schedule but I think this year I'll be able to get a few more in.

Ive been thinking alot about building a period correct Oldsmobile powered Gasser, since the Olds 455 is my go to engine for the past 50+ years. I wonder if it would be within the spirt of the rules to build something like a 55 Olds gasser powered by a 425/455 combo with a 6-71 backed by a modern 4 speed dog box and a 9in out back? What i have in mind should be a solid 9.50s performer, and i doubt it would be very competitive but sure does sound fun!

@@SaneCayneThey run under the 1967 IHRA rule book. They stick strictly to that era specific look and the parts that were available back then. There are a few safety exceptions but they are hidden very well. Anyway at that time most strips didn’t have timing lights or even a tree. I’m sure time slipsare available for drivers but as far as the show goes it’s just first to the line wins. Besides the cars aren’t that fast by today’s standards and they know it. That’s not the point. It’s all about the old school show.

@@Brownguy342 A lot of tracks had some form of e.t. boards by the late 60s. But I figured this series has gone the way of the N/T game because the competitive owners/drivers don't want each other knowing just how fast they're going. You say they're not fast, but there's some very solid 6 second (maybe even high 5s on a good pass?) players in the top half of the series. Anyhoo, e.t.s make the world go round for drag racing spectators. We can't tell MOV from the grandstands back on the starting line. So knowing the e.t.s is nearly half the fun of watching a series like this. Wish they would bring them back.

Does the straight axle the cause of most of the cars going all over the track

It's a combination of things, but yes, the straight front axle is a little less forgiving than regular independent front suspension. The antiquated rear suspension design (no 4 links allowed), high center of gravity and big horsepower makes these cars ill handling. They were definitely on the ragged edge.

The Idea of the straight axle came about because when the early cars with independent front ends would launch, the nose came up and the steering geometry went out the door .If you think it loos wild now, imagine what it was like in something like a 56 chevy....

Drivers get their time slips. Drivers agree to no times posted, last year the championship race showed the times at Shelby NC
