thanks for the tutorial!, i ve tried lots of methods for chopping up geometry but what i would be interested in is how to do this resolution independed so that you dont need ridiculous amounts of polygons. i havent looked into SDFs yet,maybe that would be a solution? for example you get contours from a tiff file in QGIS containing the height information

Volumes would be the way to go or just straight up vex. But I don't know vex well enough to give you any pointers. The Tron legacy effect that this is based upon was all done in processing and was later ported to HOUDINI. I don't know how but I'm guessing vex and hscript. So yes, your best bet is vex.
