HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series is here and the season 1 premiere was a promising start. Episode 1 brought us back to Westeros nearly 200 years before the events of the original series. It’s a time when the Targaryen family is at the height of its power, and King Viserys I (Paddy Considine) is hoping to have his first male child with his wife Aemma. He needs an heir to solidify the line of succession because his small council, and especially his hand Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), is worried that his younger brother Daemon (Matt Smith) might take over if something goes wrong.
By the end of the first episode all of his plans have fallen through and he decides to name his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) the Princess of Dragonstone making her his heir. This goes against the decision of the Council of 101 where king Jaehaerys I let his lords decide who would be his heir. They passed over his eldest descendant Rhaenys (Eve Best), to choose his eldest male descendent Viserys.
Episode 101: “The Heirs of the Dragon”
Directed by Miguel Sapochnik
Written by Ryan J. Condal
Original Air Date August 21, 2022
Official Synopsis: Viserys hosts a tournament to celebrate the birth of his second child. Rhaenyra welcomes her uncle Daemon back to the Red Keep.

I liked how they were talking about her being the heir in front of the Black Dread’s skull, and you still see the mark he left on Harrenhall when the episode opens there. I’m curious to see what the opening credits sequence looks like since they decided not to include it with this week’s episode. Let me know what you think. Are you ready to go back to Westeros?

I'm saying that as a big fan of the stories. It wasn't one of my favorite choices to make into an adaptation. Not sure why my being truthful about that would cause you to mistrust what I say about the show. I don't think it's an uncommon opinion either.

As someone who read the GOT books and watch the show but has not read the source material for House of the Dragon: I really liked the first episode and thought an excellent job was done by the writers and editors in slowly bringing us back to Westeros. It wasn’t until the final minutes of the episode did we feel like “okay, now we’re back in this world.”

I also read books/ watched the show and have not read Fire and Blood. I thought the episode was good enough to keep me watching but I can't say I am excited at this point. The only compeling character is Matt Smith's Deamon. The visuals are up to snuff and way better looking than anything we have seen of Rings of Power.

Remember, we had season upon season in this world where absolute horrors were being depicted in virtually every episode lol from Theon's torture at the hands of Ramsay Bolton, to Harrenhal being shown as a massive ancient ruin used primarily, at the moment, for torture and depravity. Every single episode I can recall, at one point or another, saying; "Jeezus! Can't [this character] catch a friggin' break already?!" 😁 Whether it was Arya, being captured and mistaken for a boy made to sleep in the mud in a cage, or burned bodies of children being strung up at Winterfell, or all of the disgusting terrors taking place at Craster's Keep, beyond the Wall. We went from highlight to highlight like the battle of Blackwater bay to the Red Wedding to John Snow "undercover" with the Wildlings before having to fight against them at Castle Black, without anything even resembling relief in-between! The introduction and fleshing out of new horrendous characters, and witnessing what even the most seemingly unimportant ones were capable of, doing even to the more important characters, or so we thought lol a band of Bolton men chopping Jaime Lannister's hand off, or multiple seasons of everyone believing we'd see Caitlin Stark reunited with her children once again, only to see her murdered unceremoniously by old Walder Frey! And that's all without even mentioning what we had to watch Daenerys going through, across the narrow sea. My point is; This world that George R.R. Martin created is quite typically an extremely difficult place for even the most seemingly "secure" characters to survive! And, there was a reason we all tuned in every week lol because we needed to see what would happen next, because that balance of power was so precarious most of the time there really was no telling which one would be ahead or which one gone forever, week to week! If they're trying to get everyone submerged back in all over again, they've got a TON of heavy lifting to do, even with George R.R. Martin right there helping them, for it to have any chance of being anywhere near as compelling. But, I'm hopeful. 🤞

Agreed. It was that constant feeling that ever structure and power dynamic in GoT was a house made of cards just waiting to fall apart on itself that made it so absolutely intense and utterly suspenseful. I hope they bring that intensity back in full swing. The first episode came off as really strong, for me at least. If they can keep this momentum going they have the chance to produce another masterpiece. Hopefully with a better ending, too, which I know is a horse that's already been beaten to a pulp. Still, though, that was what made the ending feel so weak - the main characters started to feel like typical protagonists with little to no chance of actually dying, and it ended up feeling more like a traditional good vs. evil with good prevailing.

With you knowing the book knowledge, you can help elaborate where its needed and have an idea of what not to say [spoil]. Plus, Game of Thrones is such a vast world and history, so your Breakdowns would serve as a great reminder of things they may allude to from the first series of GoT that we as the viewers may have forgotten or missed. With that said, do what you gotta do. I appreciate your content quite a bit and honestly dont ever hop on KZbin for this kinda stuff.

Great review. I really enjoyed the first episode. It had a bit of a darker and foreboding tone to it than I had anticipated. As a book reader I didn't really like the tie in with the Targaryens passing along the warning of "A Song of Ice and Fire." It felt a bit forced. My favorite scene was Daemon telling Viserys that he was weak and needed his help. The visuals of the meeting served to confirm his claim because Viserys chose to meet Daemon in the throne room. It was as if he needed all the trappings of his position to have the strength to stand up to him. Promising start to this story.
@stealth11
@stealth11 Жыл бұрын
@@cybele_mullejz Yes, and the thing is that Daemon's biggest problem is that he hasn't gotten the respect and consideration he feels he deserves from his brother. If Viserys was a bit more intuitive and secure he would've recognized that Daemon offering to be his Hand would be a good thing for him. Daemon is the perfect counterbalance and willing to play the bad cop role. Instead he foolishly trusts a snake like Otto Hightower .

Some takeaways so far: 1. It's the first episode, so they had to introduce a lot of things to the audience surely, but at a few times it felt like "tell - don't show" in your face. I may be biased since I watched GOT and read the books though, maybe a total newbie to the world wouldn't notice it 2. Still no purple eyes 3. It looks promising, with the bold opening of violence and sex, and production values greater than the pilot of GOT. Still, some obvious CGI and cheap wigs could hint at possible bad stuff in upcoming episodes/seasons. 4. Missed hearing your great voice and narration about a show I'm passionate about. This is interesting because Dany's vision in the House of the undying makes sense. Rhaegar says he has a song, his is the song of ice and fire. Rhaegar was told of this as he was the heir apparent.

i think he actually read it in a book. I also think the mad king was having dreams about the white walkers and it contributed to him losing his mind

I was really impressed with this first episode! It was great. Already invested in several characters and can't wait to see how this first season plays out

I'm the opposite. I enjoyed the first episode but I'm not invested in any of the characters.... yet. Hopefully that'll change soon because that's kinda important.

Thanks for the breakdown. Having not read the books but watched GoT there were a few things I was unsure of.

Love your videos! I look forward to your show reviews. Not everyone has read the books, so I am not sure if revealing what will happen in the show, based on what happens in the books, will spoil anything for me as a viewer. Personally I need to brush up on what was said about the past events, in GOT, but I hope nothing in these reviews will spoil any future episodes. The main thing I’m excited to see, that was talked about in GOT, is the Dance of the Dragons. Can’t wait to tune in next week!

Thank you for explaining the episode. I needed this! I didn’t read the books and I really don’t feel like binging GOT. So your explanation made sense. Keep up the good work 👍

Did anyone notice the the knights jousting were riding in the wrong direction? They should be riding so they can use their right hand to knock other rider off their horse. That’s why in England, the steering wheel is on the right side of the car.

Truly hope you continue with the weekly recaps as I didn’t read this section of books, but read GOT & loved that tv series (the season sucked, but it was a visual joy!). Great review & look forward to this story as it’s totally new to me. I don’t remember all the details from GOT. It is not missed that the main character looks so much like Deanayries (spelling bad!).

I loved the background. But I was a bit dinapointed by the scenario. IT was so default. Same story King want an heir , the Queen die at childbirth. Who did not expect her to die? Then the feminine strong Girl transforms because she is special.... I hope there Will be UNExpected things in this story...

Great recap of an excellent first episode. Thanks for all the detail and observation. Something I noticed that surprised me - the dragons are decked out in saddles! Remembering how Daenerys has to hang on to the back of her dragon, it was interesting to see these special saddles that make riding a dragon so much easier. I wonder why Daenerys didn't have one made for her dragon. Maybe that detail wasn't remembered 172 years later? The second thing - I am a dragonholic. I watch anything with dragons, and I first came to GOT for the dragons before falling in love with the entire storyline. I think the dragons look kind of cartoonish and puny in this opening episode. And I was hoping for a shot of 10 dragons in the air. Didn't happen. But enjoyed it and I'm excited to see what happens next. Thanks for your excellent recap and I look forward to seeing others.

Like your break down. Hope you keep going with it. Personally I really liked the "vision" message he gave to Rhaenyra. Makes me think that the message was handed all the way down to Rhaegar and then the secret was lost when Robert killed him. Nobody in the 7 kingdoms believed until it was upon them thus no planning could occur. Overall I was very happy with episode 1. The laying the ground work of characters is nice although there was a part of me that really loved the fact the original series just threw you into the pool and for pretty much the entirety of season 1 I referred to characters by their appearance or actions. It's got a lot to live up to but if episode 1 is any indication it should be a great series. I have to say though being "back in this world" really makes me miss all those characters. I want to see Jamie, Jon, Tyrian, Arya, Bronn etc.....again...

Started watching your Expanse recaps, then Raised by Wolves. I hope your HotD recaps find enough of an audience that you continue them. I don’t read the books and find your recaps the perfect level of detail and insight for somebody who doesn’t care too much about some deviation from the source material.

Really liked the breakdown and review, had a lot of similar thoughts with the tie-ins to the OG GoT series. I'm excited for all the people who didn't get to watch GoT as it aired live (myself included) and sending this review to my buddies who get to watch this series live now!

When I started watching GoT it was already well into it's 3rd season or so, so I had a lot to binge and it was easy to do, this seems harder, not because it's bad, but because I'm starting from day one knowing what the first series was capable of and that this series is clearly not pulling any punches either. The wait, as well as the actual episodes, are going to be high octane anxiety fuel.
