House of the Dragon Episode 2 breakdown. In-depth recap & review of Season 1 ep. 2 “The Rogue Prince” with the ending explained. Please subscribe! 👉 bit.ly/PetePeppers
HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series is here and the second episode helped to develop the players in the game. Episode 2 moved forward six months and King Viserys (Paddy Considine) is under pressure to remarry. Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) and Rheanys Targaryen (Eve Best) suggest that he join their houses by marrying their twelve year old daughter Laena. Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) would like for him to marry his daughter Alicent (Emily Carey). Younger brother Daemon (Matt Smith) has run off to Dragonstone with his courtesan Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), and he's stolen a dragon's egg from King's Landing.
Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) has been named heir and the Princess of Dragonstone. In episode 2 you get the sense that the people closest to the king are not thrilled about this. Her aunt Rhaenys warns her that her father will remarry and will try to produce more heirs. If one of them is male the realm may choose him over her to be the next ruler.
King Viserys finally makes his choice at the end of the Rogue Prince. He announces his intentions to marry Alicent and shocks both Corlys and Rhaenyra. Corlys returns to Driftmark where he meets with Daemon and tries to recruit him for a campaign to take back the Stepstones.
Episode 102: “The Rogue Prince”
Directed by Greg Yaitanes
Written by Ryan J. Condal
Original Air Date August 28, 2022
Official Synopsis: Rhaenyra oversteps at the Small Council. Viserys is urged to secure the succession through marriage. Daemon announces his intentions.

Small thing but a great detail, when Rhaenrya is watching Viserys with Laena she fiddles with a ring on her hand. In the books we’re told she wore many rings to fidget with as a nervous activity. That little attention to detail matters to me, shows the writers pay attention.

There was no drama for us in the Corlys/Daemon scene but that was for the people that are just TV viewers. It probably played well for them. It's painful to watch all of the bad decisions Viserys is making. To surprise Corlys with the marriage to Alicent at the council was foolish. Corlys would've still been angry, but Viserys could've at least tried talking to him alone and explained his daughter was too young. Then he doesn't warn Rhaenyra either. The confrontation at Dragonstone made Viserys look weak, with his 15-year-old daughter flying in to retrieve the egg. Otto recognized how formidable she was at that point too, it was as if the look on his face was "your not your father's daughter." Another strong episode.

Viserys later complains that his daughter rarely says more than two words to him. After he kicks her out of the meeting room like he did, its no wonder.

I was worried there would be a dropoff in episode 2 as the excitement of returning to Westeros goes away, but it didn't happen. Everyone is still doing a great job, I really feel bad for Alicent Hightower, you could see the worry in her face that the king was going to select her for a bride. I think my only complaint from this episode was Mysaria's accent was making for some weird beats as she spoke to Daemon about being used as a pawn and how it puts a target on her back

Female rulers are just as unusual in the Thrones time as this one especially a woman leading the Dothraki, the problem with this show is the dialogue is not subtle about it at all, it feels to much like todays politics is creeping into the show more than anything
@ajae...
@ajae... Жыл бұрын
It kind of comes off as how men think women speak about lacking power. It's weird for a time when women were raised to understand that it was normal for men to have more political power. I doubt there was ever a time when most women liked it, but they might have been subtle in their complaints. Or get the most power the best way they can while pretending to be ok with being considered lesser. Also Daenarys walked out of a fire with three dragons. It was pretty hard to deny her power. The Dothraki eventually put her in her woman's place. She had to set another fire and show off her grown dragon to get them to follow her again.

Corlys is being unrealistic. Does he really expect the king to wait three years to produce a male heir? His daughter commented that she wouldn’t have to sleep with the king for two years. Obviously, she’s too young to marry. The king needs to strengthen his House. He can’t wait around for Corlys’s daughter to grow up.

I feel like the hints of comparisons between Daenerys and Rhaenerys aren't going to go away any time soon, at least not until she becomes the older version they keep demonstrating she's going to become at some point Her whole introduction in the last episode was set up to make people think about it (yeah, I'm guessing not a whole lot of jeopardy for her or Alicent's early years). Not knowing the books, I feel like anything could happen at any time outside of what I (think I) know from the marketing. I can't imagine big issues kicking off too early, but little things have always snowballed quickly in this series. I didn't mind the Daemon reveal at the end, even though you pretty much know who he's talking to, because that whole conversation was great.

I liked it alot, but I agree about some of the awkward stuff. Like that slow reveal to the last shot of Daemon. We all knew who Corlys was likely talking to, so why was it treated like some shocking surprise? The direction sometimes tries too hard to be dramatic, and it comes off corny. Same when the king announced who he was going to marry. Podcaster David Chen, likened that melodramatic moment to something we might see on "The Bachelor" and I totally agree, lol

I think it’s funny that ppl think Vicerys marrying Laena is absurd.. but marrying Otto’s daughter Alicent is a-ok.. but she’s only 3 years older. Good glob people. Daemon stole the egg to speak to his brother. That was his purpose. The king is very selfish by marrying Alicent. And HE can marry who he wants, but god forbid Daemon having a choice in who he’s married to. It’s ridiculous! His duty is first to the realm, and that duty was to marry Laena. Marrying a Hightower benefits no one but VICERYS. He’s the WORST. AND AGAIN LAENA IS 12, ALLICENT IS 15. What’s the age difference? 3 years. HE. IS. SO. TWO FACED. AND. A. TERRIBLE. RULER. UUGGGRHHH.

what corlys said to daemon seemed strange to me. corlys indeed grew his house greatly, but the velaryons' status was always high, there were many marriages between the houses over the years including the parents of aegon the conqueror. surely daemon knows the history as well. kinda weird.

I have to be honest and say that the storyline about him potentially marrying the 12 year old was really creepy and hard for me to watch. Just seeing him standing next to that little girl (who looks even younger than 12) with the thought that she might be his wife was a lot. I'm glad they decided not to go in that direction. I know him marrying the other girl isn't hugely better, but at least she's older.

Paddy Consadine is doing phenomenally good but If Matt Smith wasn’t in this show it wouldn’t be nearly as decent. He’s kind of like Tyrion + Jaime rolled into one character. Gotta say I like the way Rhanyera’s actress is portraying her. They should’ve got a new theme song tho.

As a casual viewer (who watches Pete’s to fill in the details that I likely missed), I don’t understand Steven, uh, er, Viserys’ choice to marry Alicent. Up until then it was all duty, duty, duty, then who he chooses to marry is from his heart. It seems like a choice made to create drama than out of the characters sense of duty.

The Hightowers are an important family though. Politically it's not a strange choice, it's more about how he made the decision in the show.

@alanperry8676
@alanperry8676 Жыл бұрын
@@neondemon5137 This is a political marriage. Response to being bullied shouldn’t be a factor. If it were, then he should not get married at all since that seems to be his preference. These stories are modeled after a time when political marriages to children was not unheard of. (I won’t mention the non-political marriages from long, long ago between older men and young girls that I have found in and near my family tree.) Having not read the book but having read Pete’s comment, in addition to the apparent affection between Viserys and Alicent, there must also be a political benefit joining those families that the show hasn’t made apparent (at least to me). What it looks like to me now is that the Hand is trying to make a play only to benefit himself.

I find most of the characters dull and uninteresting, something GoT didn’t have an issue with. By the second episode in GoT there were loads of great characters and storylines. That’s not the case here. Matt Smith is the one bright spot because he’s so intriguing. The big reveal at the end of episode 2 didn’t surprise me because they already established that Otto was sympathetic to Matt Smith in the first episode. Still lots of setup going on so I probably won’t be able to judge the series until the season ends.

When you’re talking about the reveal with Daemon in the end you mean that you don’t like the way it was shot or the actual reveal itself? Kinda confused with that. Besides the lack of Daemon, I really liked this episode more than Heirs of the Dragon since that one just felt like an introduction and the storylines were more parallel than intertwined (except for the final act). I feel like this one has an improved pacing and each of the storylines in it advance the overall season while affecting one another quite well: Rhaenyra’s desire for validation clashes with Viserys’ search for a new wife, while Daemon wanting validation through marriage and the egg rises the tensions for everyone, and in the end all comes down to reward Otto’s manipulations and fuel Corlys’ resentment. IMO that was a very solid set-up episode.
