The Targaryens essentially stopped polygamy after the war between the Faith and King Maegor after he took many wives (6 in total, I think five were alive at the same time between the years 47 and 48 AC), but the incest never really stopped. As others have said here, Viserys married his cousin, his parents are brother and sister, and so are his grandparents. And it never really stopped - Daenerys's father married his sister and so did Dany's grandparents.

It might be less of a sister-brother issue and more of an age 2-17 issue. It would be a betrothal, sure, but I think Viserys’ reluctance was more about the fact that Rhaenerya would be held back (in terms of romance, consummation, baby-making, etc.) until Aegon was of age.

You may notice that the King has lost two fingers on his left hand. In the second episode only one finger was bandaged and was treated with maggots. So his health is failing, as is the strength of the realm. You can see that things are deteriorating and that eventually the kingdom will want leadership and strength to take hold. It's getting closer and closer for factions to form and support going to one of the three that may take the throne.

Most of Targaryen marriages were incest, reason being the Dragons. Only the Dragonlord Families of the Valyrian freehold were able to ride them but after the Doom of Valyria, the Targaryans were the only Dragonlord Family to survive, so they decided to maintain their bloodline by marrying eachother, keeping the power of the dragons in the family. If they hadn't done that, the Targaryens never would've gained this much power.

Matt Smith is perfect for Daemon Targaryen. Some fans say they wanted another actor because they imagined Daemon being more physically imposing. I prefer if the actor nails the personality more than the looks. It's similar to how I feel about Austin Butler portraying Elvis. I used to watch Once Upon A Time In Hollywood a lot, so I knew who Austin was. When I read he was going to be Elvis, I scoffed. He looks nothing like him. But when I saw the movie, he nailed Elvis perfectly. Performance matters more than physical looks. I'd rather have an actor not look how you imagined that character as long as he got the character traits nailed down over an actor who may look like that character but acts nothing like him. Example of the latter is Demetrius Shipp Jr. portraying Tupac Shakur in All Eyez On Me (2017). Looks like him but couldn't capture Tupac's charisma. While Matt Smith captures Daemon's charisma. Basically how *most* of us picture him from the books. It's crazy to think Queen Elizabeth II died yesterday and we're watching a show called House Of The Dragon about royal succession. Queen lasted 70+ years. Longest rein similar to King Jaehaerys Targaryen. Then we have a woman as the next heir which is Rhaenyra similar to Elizabeth 70+ years ago. And then Matt Smith portrayed Prince Phillip in The Crown.

Three main kills this episode. The king needs something caught for him and didn’t want to kill but did it for status. Meanwhile both rheanyra and daemon emerge in blood after handling their kills. Daemon wasn’t afraid to go after what was needed to be done to prove his worth. And Rhaenyra let her anger out within the kill, also proving her worth as handling the situation.

The minute Daemon read in Viserys’ note “I will not let victory elude US” he was like what you damn mean “us”? A) you’ve been MIA for 3 years, and B) I literally did this to prove my worth as a potential King. So hard no on your v late bailout option, tysm. I also think my fave subtle bit of heart wrenching writing is the two time Rhaenyra is unintentionally wounded by her family. The first, when Alicent is chirping away about how easy her birth with Aegon was - when Rhae Rhae’s mum died horrifically in childbirth, then again by her dad when he said “find one that pleases you - as I did”. The little look after he says that tells me that Rhae Rhae still hadn’t known that Alicent had been working the akin’s chambers before they were betrothed - behind Rhae Rhae’s back. Also, LOL at the Stefano deep cut.

@KMJ already said it but around 16:09 I’m fairly certain those are the Lyonel Strong’s boys, Harwin (Breakbones) Strong (rumored the strongest knight in the seven kingdoms of the time, and the son Viserys thought Lyonel was gonna offer for marriage when they discussed it) and Larys (The Clubfoot) Strong. It’s just my opinion but I do agree with KMJ. After the mess and embarrassing scene that was Viserys botching the killing blow to the stag they found on their hunt, I think they very much appreciated seeing their princess return from a hunt of her own, successful, and clearly having killed the boar herself given the blood all over her. That aside, 1. She brought back some pork for everyone. 2. Given the grinning and nod I’m sure Harwin thought this was a good look on her, aka POWERFUL/COMPETENT/INDEPENDENT 👀. Maybe they were laughing but more than anything to me it read like more like acknowledging & appreciation 😁

Sadly, there are two reasons Rhaenyra can't marry Ser Criston. First, Criston is lowborn, and Rhaenyra has to marry into a noble house. Second, Criston is a King's Guard, who are banned from marrying.

The good thing about this series is that, even if you read the books, you won't know the full story, because the books have a massive amount of "unreliable narrator" in them. The book doesn't talk about what really happened, but is a fictional historian's re-telling of events based on the reports from other sources, some of which contradict each other. The show is supposed to be the *actual* events, regardless of what any Maester says about them. So you know the broad strokes, but not the full picture with all the details.

I know a lot of people are disappointed that we didn't get to see a fight between Daemon and the Crabfeeder, but the thing is, without his men, Crabfeeder isn't much of a fighter anymore with how sick he is. If you look carefully, you can see he's half-blind and shaking like a leaf. He was more of a leader than a fighter at that point, and the fight would have been pretty quick and rather boring.

8:30 A stone is roughly 14 pounds...so if this "white hart" is actually 35 stone, that's nearly 500 pounds...that's a beast of a deer. Ser Cole would be a good choice for Rhaenyra (at least, they seem to get along pretty well), but he's now part of the Kingsguard, and as such cannot take a wife or a title and lands. Very interesting that Viserys gave Rhaenyra leave to pick her own husband...that's pretty rare for a highborn lady, especially the heir to the throne. I love using that phrase "the gods have punished me for my indulgences" for "I'm hungover AF"...I'm gonna have to start using that one myself. Also love that Daemon didn't bother to speak a single word this entire episode, but you knew exactly what was going through his head.

To answer for the "do the people who have read the book enjoy the show", we do very much because they are history books and they are not objective, they are biased and many events are said to be dubious, we have several versions of how things could have gone, we know only the general history for certain, so it's fascinating to see how they decide to portray it in the show.

The deer could've sensed fear and, instead of running, attack. Wild animals are unpredictable, so Cole was just being careful if you ask me. I don't know much about GOT lore, because I didn't read all the books. The feeling of not going to know the end is kind of a downer. Anyways I think the appearance of the white deer symbolizes who is the true heir. That's why Vyserys seems so disappointed at the killing in my opinion, and why all points to Rhaenyra suits best for the throne. Is being amazing, I'm liking it a lot. And your reactions are awesome. Just to clarify, direct incestual marriages were much more commonplace in the Targaryen house. It's not nearly as taboo as it was during the reign of the Lannisters. Also, she wouldn't be able to marry Aegon until he is old enough. Until then it is just a betrothal (engagement) so that no one else tries to ask for her hand in marriage as she's already be promised to Aegon, who happens to be Lord Hightower's grandson by his daughter, Alicent.

I thought it was so silly when they talked about the crab feeder’s archers having “the high ground” when a single dragon could roast them all in seconds while shielding its rider from arrows with its armored body that simple arrows are highly unlikely to harm. Dragons kinda negate the high ground concept of anyone else.

The fantastic thing for me is that GRRM and Ryan Condal are the writers and creators of HOTD. GRRM didn't have much involvement with GOT as D&D bought the rights to do what they wanted. I think this might be better than GOT, if it keeps up this excellent work!!!

I was worried House of the Dragon would be fanfiction in the way I feel seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones were. Once Game of Thrones bypassed GRRM's writing, it felt like it lost a ton of the nuance, political intrigue, and proper character motivations, and became more about set pieces and cheap payoffs. So very happy to see House of the Dragon is a return to form. The characters are believable. Their motivations make sense. And their interactions/machinations with one another are incredibly intriguing.

Rhaenyra really does come across as petulant in this. To be fair she's not happy AND is still a teen what a combo😆 Regarding marrying off Prince Aegon to Rhaenyra I had thought that the Targaryens routinely inbred amongst themselves hence their blond hair trait (not just in GoT time but also before when this series is set)? Re. Cole, they wouldn't consider him as he's commoner who gives nothing to the marriage in terms of wealth, power or family connections. Also I don't think Kings Guard can marry?

What i dont get is why the lords would be so opposed to a female heir. As naming states, when getting married the children take the fathers name. Meaning a marriage to a princess who is then queen would make the sons the future kings and heirs. Its an even faster way for other houses to put forth a suitor and make a play for the throne.
