House of the Dragon Reminds Us How Bad Game of Thrones Was

House of the Dragon was an excellent expansion of the Song of Ice and Fire lore, reviving the universe from the death it had at the end of Game of Thrones. But the exceptional first season of House of the Dragon also continued to make references to its predecessor, drawing our memories back to the disappointment we suffered when the first series ended in 2019.

I personally agree that forcing "the prophecy" into HotD rubbed me the wrong way, but the first season of HotD was still great. Nothing will fix GoT until GRRM finishes the ASOIAF books (big if).

It is actually not true that D&D ran out of source material! They adapted book 1-3 rather faithfully, but mostly ignored book 4-5, started to make up their own plotlines and ignored GRRM's input how the show should go on. The problem is if they followed GRRM's story they'd had have to make at least 10 seasons and they already wanted to get over with it.

Thank God somebody said it. Yeah, they never cared about the series enough to make 10 seasons, picking D&D to make the adaptation was a fatal mistake. Really hurts as AFfC and ADwD together is imo better than anything prior to ASoS (which isn't saying much as ASoS is the best book)

I went on a bit of a ASOIAF boycott after the way Game of Thrones ended, didn't read any of the subsequent stuff, just went away and read other series. I didn't even watch HOTD when it first came out, I started watching when E07 came out and really liked it. I am bitter sweet on it though as I have read the book the show is based on and will get to Dunk and Egg in time, I am reminded that we are 11 years waiting for Winds of Winter with no solid date for it to come out😕

Why continue squawking about GoT last season. It’s been over for 2 damn years. Get over it. HoTD is a good show on its own. GoT didn’t get worse because of it. The only thing changed is your perception. GoT is done . Let it go.

@@BrickKildaguy So HBO and GRRM are purposefully trying to make GoT look worse? Is that what you’re saying? I only recall ASOIAF being mentioned in Episodes 1, 8 and 10 and only briefly. In which other episodes was it mentioned}? Every other episode should seen to mean it was mentioned in at least 5 episodes. I think it was only mentioned to show the connection to the world that GRRM created.

The show had some of its best episodes in the later seasons, received critical praise even when it went past Martin's material and won a bunch of Emmies for a number of categories throughout its 8 season run. That sounds like a critical success to me. The Bells, for instance, is the best episode of the entire show imo and that's the second-to-last episode of the entire show.
