Really like this quote. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I feel there's a kind of reverence for the irreducible complexity the universe. There is a beauty in that complexity. All the tools we have to describe and measure reality have to make approximations, look close enough, deep enough, for long enough, they break down.

I work in a countertop place. We cut and build kitchen counters. The saw leaves the edges kinda rough, so we take polishers and smooth them out to a mirror surface. I feel like we get them incredibly smooth to the point they have a reflection that exceeds that of the factory finished top of the stone (think the reflectiveness ofna random quartz countertop, and double it). You can see details so clearly in the finish when we are done. This video makes me wonder how many scratches and imperfections are actually left in any given piece we work on. This ks a great video! It's so cool!
@adorp13 күн бұрын
Lots of pores most likely. But the varnish would fill those. Varnish does a very good job of filling irregularities. Notice how everything looks shinier when wet? The water fills the gaps at a microscopic level.
@05degrees4 күн бұрын
@@adorp +++ also darker because those filled holes allow light to reflect more around and around inside each drop so when it gets finally reflected back to us it has specific wavelength bands absorbed more thoroughly than when reflecting from a dry or unvarnished surface and its color thus is darker and often more saturated.

That shot of the one millimeter really astounded me! I've been getting into higher precision with my DIY stuff, and chasing tenths and sometimes hundredths of a mm in dimensions. That shot really puts it into perspective! At 4k, the millimeter has 3840 pixels across it, so each 3 or 4 pixels on the image are a single micron. That's really amazing!
