The Battle of Torgau was a pivotal conflict between two of the most powerful European states of the time - the Kingdom of Prussia and the Habsburg Empire. The army of King Frederick the Great of Prussia clashed with the might of the Austrian army, led by Field Marshal Leopold Josef Graf Daun.
This battle, waged during the Third Silesian War as part of the infamous Seven Years' War, would go down in history as one of the most brutal and blood-soaked conflicts of its time. With tensions running high, the battle saw two large armies engage in a brutal struggle for control over the strategic location of Torgau in Germany. As both sides fought fiercely to achieve their objectives, the battle proved to be a critical moment in the wider conflict, with the fate of the war hanging in the balance.

@HoH - Great video, as ever! One suggestion to further polish your presentation - you state that Frederick was struck by a lost musket ball. I think that the word you want may be spent (nearly out of the velocity needed to penetrate a body), thus: "Frederick was struck by a spent musket ball." Or perhaps it was a stray (off course, or not specifically aimed at him) musket ball, such as "Frederick was struck by a stray musket ball."

I try to pack plenty of diplomatic/political history in these videos themselves. I really enjoy the political side of things (more than the military side if I am honest). However, I think an entire video with a diplomatic wrap-up or review will take a lot of time, research, and might become a little boring when it comes to all details/treaties.

What a slugfest! Like two exhausted boxers throwing haymakers at each other and refusing to give up. On paper, it wasn’t a great victory considering Prussian losses. But I believe it was the battle that won the war. The effect on the morale of Austria and its allies must have been enormous: both Laudon and Daun had been beaten. Both of Austria’s armies were in shambles. They were now in no position to go on the offensive. And I think this victory had an effect on France and Russia too. Nobody wanted to be the one to actually fight Frederick, after seeing that he was capable of killing 20000+ of your soldiers in a single day, even though he was outnumbered and attacking a fortified position. Who would want to risk their army against an enemy like that? Frederick showed at Torgau what would happen to an army that ventured into Prussian-held territory. Russia and France would spend the rest of the war waiting for someone else to face Frederick first. And that meant a stalemate. Absolutely incredible
@TheManofthecross
@TheManofthecross Жыл бұрын
partly due to the efforts of keeping the prussian losses under wraps or down played which failed in either case when you think about others would tell of the daunting numbers and that would get out especally with the austrian numbers. but this would be the thing that throws out daun himself and show that his caution came back to bite him in the ass.

I was a fan of him after reading a German funny history book by Joachim Fernau. It seems he is a controversial figure given the time that he lived in but I didn't know it at that time and he writes in a way that is funny and yet very engaging and informative. He would describe how Frederick had to basically run from side to side of his kingdom to protect it from the 3 big enemies, knowing that if he loses he wouldn't lose a bit of the kingdom but going down completely. The book was nice to him in terms of his betrayals of allies but still.

This series has been tremendous. Had not known very much about Frederick and his battles/campaigns until I read Frederick the Great by Dennis Showalter a few years ago. I feel like the biggest mistake that Fredrick keeps making again and again is allowing his enemy to have local numerical superiority. He should have delayed his attack until his full northern army had arrived once he realized that he lost the element of surprise. Notice how zetin massed all available forces south before striking. If Fredrick had done the same instead of attacking piecemeal it would have been a much more successful hammer/anvil strategy since they could have rolled up the line before becoming so exhausted/depleted!

Another great video. Thanks for your interest in such an interesting time. A couple errors however. The initial Prussian attack of 10 grenadier battalions was concentrated against the Austrian left, not across the whole of their line. Later in the battle, von Zieten's attack was led by infantry, not cavalry, across a dam over the Suptitz stream. That infantry attack decided the battle.

But why didn't the Cavalry on the right flank the Prussians?

If Napoleon had been in Daun's place, he would have attacked and destroyed Zieten's army corps and then Frederick's. It is incredible how stupid were the allies commanders ...

"Napoleon would have won" is not a good standard to judge military commanders. Daun had a great defensive position, and his decision to keep it and let the Prussians fight a battle of attrition was sound. That the Prussians had the smaller army, and suffered as many or more casualties than Daun did, gives some credence to his decision. If Frederick had continued winning victories like Torgau, he would have lost the war the same way someone like Robert E. Lee did. The most decisive success Frederick had with his victory was the success he had hiding his losses, which is something outside Daun's control. Daun handled this battle about as well as could be expected of a decent officer. I do agree Napoleon in the same position would have likely won - during the battle of Rivoli, Napoleon gets into an even worse position than Daun got himself into here, as Napoleon's line of retreat gets cut off and his outnumbered army (19,000 French with 40 guns vs 28,000 Austrians with 90 guns) is encircled. With some clever concentrations, Napoleon manages to divide the battlefield into three parts and defeat each part in detail, and the battle unravels into one of the most lopsided victories in the whole of the French Revolutionary Wars - 14,000 Austrians losses in the battle proper plus 11,000 more captured in the pursuit, compared to 3,200 French losses. So yeah, Napoleon would have probably won from Daun's position. But expecting Daun to be Napoleon is hardly a fair expectation or comparison. Daun compares well against most of his contemporaries, and that's all you can reasonably expect of a general.

@@PueSaness Torgau was a Pyrrhic victory for Prussians, yet they kept on fighting.
@PueSaness
@PueSaness Жыл бұрын
@@KJ-md2wj Right, but the point was that Prussia wouldn't be able to uphold the cost of pyrrhic victories indefinitely. That's like pointing to the Battle of Asculum and saying that since the Epirots continued fighting after it, they could sustain several more Asculums. It's fallacious reasoning.

We Americans (many of us) know this only as the French-Indian War. We know nothing about this part of the wider war we partipated in. But it did help, ultimately, launch our Revolution.

Honestly, at this point this war jsut reminds me of the famous polish quote from WW2, just with Prussia as the focus: "Poland has not yet perished" After all the shit that went down Prussia has been barely holding on for years and its become redicilous how the 3 biggest empires on continental europe at the time still havent managed to smash what is basically an ant in comparisson. I mean, what was the population difference? France alone had more population at this time then the entire area of the Holy Roman Empire....add to taht the non german population of the Austrian Empire and the entirety of eastern europe that made up the Russian Empire.... There were propably for every 1 Prussian Inhabitant at least 20 Coalition Inhabitants.... Not even mentioning the fact that Most of Prussia has been at looted at least once at this point by a foreign army while with the exception of Bohemia the other 3 empires basically suffered no damage to their civilian infrastructure.... It becomes pretty easy to understand why Prussia basically turned into one of the most peaceful countries in europe after this war, it took them decades to remotely recover from this. Also explains to some degree future prussian and german military doctrine to try to win a war quickly or at least fight it entirely in the enemys territory. And the biggest irony? Prussia would gain more land during their peaceful decades under Frederick then they ever won duiring any of the wars with the partitions of the polish nobles republic. However Silesia would turn out to be one of the msot valuable pieces of land in all of europe later on and together with the Ruhr Valley area the backbone of germanys strength for two world wars (tow big coal regions). Truly a redicilous war and like the spartans in the ancient times the prussians would massively exploit their deeds from this conflict for propaganda purposes inventing the myth of the undefeatable prussian army and their supposed "militarization" of the state. The famous Voltaire quote “Where some states have an army, the Prussian Army has a state.” is the best example of this successfull prpaganda campaign. Prussia basically did the same Sparta faking military strength with proapganda so nobody would want to attack them in the first place out of fear that it would be to costly of a war (same strategy switzerland ahs by the way even today). It worked really well.....until a french corsican decided to go on a european rampage decades later and called the bluff. Ironically Prussias military propaganda even worked until today, same as with the Spartans, because the things most people know about Prussia are their supposed "overpowered army" and their "militarization". Jsut look at EU IV as an example of that narrative being alive today :D

Sire, the fact alone that the prussians won the war makes them the single best army of europe at the time I mean, just looking at the ridiculus distances these armies marched makes napoleon look like a turtle. And even after years of brutal war, the "overrated" prussian army still managed to completly rape the allies at Freiberg

It's good that this episode didn't butcher the pronunciation of any names as badly "LAND-eh-SHUT" in the last episode. I still don't like the constant use of purple prose to describe simple things. Dramatic flair is all well and good, but I find it excessive when it's used in every other sentence, instead of saving it for a concluding statement. I also think it would be a better listening experience if you included more pauses at the end of paragraphs - just by the pacing of the audio it can be difficult to know where one talking point ends and another begins. A promising addition to your 7 Years War series, as always.

when and where did the Austrian lost their numerical advantage? Laudon's 24000 army was lost and regroup in Bohemia, yet Daun had 80000 men in liegnitz, why only 55000 in Torgau? Dresden always had its garrison.
