I must admit. You’re the best salesman I’ve ever seen. I have an in home sales business and also sold new construction for 7 years. I sold with the same approach as you. Fair pricing, no gimmicks, and all questions to help the people’s get what they truly want. I call it the straight shooting approach Honestly and sincerity sells!

I work with Rice Windows and Doors in Southwest Florida as a Window and Door salesman. There is a reason that our company close rate is so much higher than our competition. Our sales "pitch" is simply educating our clients to make a decision based off of their needs. I have told more people that they do not need windows/sliding doors more times than I can count. Our reputation is good due to honest pricing and educating clients vs trying to sell them something they don't need. Great Video!

I had an Anderson sales rep come out today and he quoted me $14,000 for 3 windows. I told him I wanted to also get other quotes as this is our first time buying/replacing windows. He got mad and said, “I guess you guys are looking to install cheap windows only. Anderson is not the window for you .” Lol I guess not. Thanks for making our decision easier.

Wow! The same thing happened to us with *Andersen* as well. We had a semi-unique situation; we agreed to a quote and then cancelled within the three days because we ended up getting a quote for windows AND the subsequent, necessary refinishing of our exterior at the same price as Andersen. When I spoke with the Andersen sales person, it was a straight up hostile interaction and he said the exact same thing. We don't know from whom we'll buy, but we definitely know who we'll be telling all our friends to avoid after that.

We watched this video the day before we called a few companies for quotes. The very first salesman did almost everything you talked about - the shocking price, the deal for today, touching himself, etc. We had to keep from laughing out loud until he finally left. His last words were like “80% of the people I make my pitch to never buy after I walk out the door.”

The "deal for today" increases efficiency. It keeps the salesman from having to see you over and over. That reduces the cost of business. The business can pass some of that on to you. It's literally just both parties helping each other out. Buyers are fucking idiots lol seriously. You guys think you're so smart and we just let you think that. The whole time we're thinking "holy fuck this guy's an idiot". You're so paranoid that you make up these ridiculous scenarios and look so stupid. The "today" price is usually less than 10% off the "crazy high" price. You're just poor and stupid and don't realize that everything is way more expensive now than it was just 5 years ago.

One thing the salesman did that really sat wrong with me was after asking him several times how much they cost and he did the big shock price and said he can tell we weren't ready for that and he'd just leave. We kept talking and he asked how much we were thinking of spending and if we could only do some of the windows which ones are "must haves". And after working the numbers for a couple minutes he was magically able to get those windows just over the number he needed for his biggest tier discount so we should be super happy and sign the contract now. When a salesman asks you how much do you have to spend it should always throw up a red flag.

I work for a larger window manufacturer and we're taught value selling. I can agree with the tactics you coined as "sleazy" are correct. We are taught to stay away from most of those, however "first call close" is a metric for performance for all companies, so the buy today has to be at least presented. Overall, like you said, if you are presenting a solution to a problem with a window or installation no one else offers makes or breaks a sale. Sometimes it is too expensive for the customer and they have to re-visit the project in a few years or potentially finance. When it comes to the ads online, as you said, "We HAVE to take advantage of this". The object of the ads is to get you to schedule an appointment, that's really it. To address the budget comments where people are reluctant to answer: We are at least told to ask that because a large number of customers (at least where I live) do not know what they want their window to be made out of. A budget helps sales people in my company know what products we can offer to the consumer. Ex: "My budget is $300 per window" that lets me know that we are probably looking at vinyl. On the other hand, if you are working with a dishonest sales person, that price will likely land a little above or below the budget you set. Just a few thoughts from the other side of the coin.

I just watched this video and disagree with your budget comment. I believe a good salesman wouldn't need to ask for the budget because an effective discussion of window types should also include a price range associated with them. If you're educating the customer effectively, THEY will naturally let you know which category they fall in and you can go from there. I simply watched about 3 of Jeff's videos and was able to determine what window type I want and where it will land monetarily, without the mention of any "budget." I think that's the difference between a good salesman and a bad one. A good salesman knows how to get the information they need without potentially offending or turning off their client.

This video is great. I need 21 new windows and came across this video and omg is this video describe sleazy sales perfectly. I set in my head regardless that I get 3 quotes before I chose. First window company had these very aggressive sales tactics. It was kinda hilarious being able to see though this aggressive sales approach. I told him I was getting two other quotes and he laughed at me. He asked me if the problem was price. But I told him the price was good. Price was about 80 percent higher than it should have been. He look so confused and I think I basically disarmed him. It’s was not worth haggling. Though I did tell him I was still very interested. I’m going to call back pretend I’m going to buy just to see how much lower they are willing to go. Thanks Jeff, this video is awesome.

Just had Renewal by Andersen come today. He waited in his car for 15 minutes while we "talked about it". When we asked for a day or two to make sure the (cough $40k) he quoted us for 10 windows and a door ... he started going off on how Vinyl Windows will be replaced in 10 years and they'll replace it for free haha... sure bud. It's amazing that he used every pitch you described in this video - absolutely amazing.

So go buy only and you’ll need windows again real quick. Over 70% of windows changed are vinyl less than 10 yrs old from companies which promised life time warranties and are out of business. Everyone thinks they can trick the system. If renewal by andersen wasn’t great value and lasting product they’d be also out of business won’t you say ?
@mnngstar
@mnngstar 6 ай бұрын
@@mrs.ruseva1395 i think the bigger issue is that they claim to not be high pressure sales guys, dropped a 40k quote to me and wanted us to make a decision while he was in the driveway. Then after saying we'd need a few days - he went off on how vinyl windows are terrible. That's great, but again the vinyl windows were less than 1/3 the price quoted. I also had Pella and Marvin quote 30% less for new install and not replacement. One week later I received a call from the "Assistant to the regional sales manager" that said our project is really intriguing and they'd like to come out again and give better pricing. I said if the pricing isn't 50% of the quote - don't bother and surprisingly I haven't heard from them again .... yet. They're pushy, shady, old school used car salesmen. The product may be fine and yes if it was complete crap people would say it and their business would suffer. However, I bet if those same people could understand that they paid a 30% premium for an arguably equal product (Andersen, Pella, Marvin) I feel like they'd be a bit more sour to Renewal by Andersen.

Another wonderful video!!!! I am replacing my original single pane aluminum windows. I had a few companies try to pressure me by using a few of the techniques you mentioned. The first company asked if all of the parties who could make a decision would be present. When the representative arrived he wanted to do a 90 minute presentation and I had to tell him I had an appointment. He didn't have a sample of the window I was interested in. A second company wanted to tell me their sale will end and prices will go up at the end of the month. He said he had to get special managerial approval to provide me the best discount. I looked up the company and saw they have the same sale 2-3 times per year. Finally, another company wanted to sell me on Lindsay vinyl windows when I wanted a quote on Marvin fiberglass windows. They bashed how Marvin windows were not only more expensive but also inferior to Lindsay (which I had never heard of before). When I told them if I go vinyl, I would more than likely go with Amsco, he told me he was concerned because he never heard of them before. So I was shocked when the quote I received was $2k more than the quote I received for Marvin fiberglass from a different company. The salesperson got nasty and said, "Sorry, I thought you knew what you wanted. I guess I was wrong. If you go with Marvin you would not get the thin frames you are looking for. Lindsay windows would give this to you."

Great video! I started in the windows sales business 6 weeks ago and disagree with 75% of the tactics. Sometimes people do need a push just because they have a difficult time deciding. My approach is more open and honest and im catching heat from my manager. But end of the day you either really need windows and doors or you don't. If I can be helpful and offer a good or great product then all that's left is price. Alot people have no clue the cost of windows and doors and now in 2021 going into 2022 the cost of everything has been increasing. Its not the same price it was 1 year ago or 5 years ago. I've heard these comments and people have unrealistic thoughts on price. But come back full circle, IF you truly have a need, bite the bullet and pull trigger on your home improvements. They will pay for themselves over time. Once again, great video and I feel I'm alot like you. Thanks for this video! It’s a must have before letting a salesman in your home. Power Windows recently came into my home for a “quote”. I didn’t expect it to be a 90 minute sales pitch and luckily for me this pissed me off enough to be a tough sale. One of the tactics they used was “Other” prices. They listed prices for Anderson, Pella, Home Depot subcontractors before giving their price, so much cheaper than the rest. I was insulted they felt they could tell me what others charged, as if they wouldn’t lie and I’d trust them on it. I made a mental note to compare the prices. Other price drops: a discount if I provided before/after energy bills, so they could “prove our windows do what we promise”. I told them I’d sleep on it but he kept pushing. From how his attitude changed, I realized they don’t sell after they leave the house. I said thinking it over was a principle and I wasn’t changing my decision. He left and took all the price quotes he previously wrote down, including the one for the job, which told me what I needed to know.

He did most of the things you said and more. He must have asked me 8 times if I would say yes and sign a document. Every time I said no. And at the end I looked him straight in the eye and with disgust in my voice I said no for the last time and he got the message and left. I said to myself never again. He was trying to sell white vinyl window. Super wide borders. Ugly. I did get a $100 walmart gift card out of it that he gave me right off the bat. But I knew from the beginning that is was just a cheap tactic. I spent it happily for wasting my time. He even had me talk to a guy claiming to be his boss to try and schmooze me. power windows also said, when i was balking, that he would go out and ask his boss if they have two incentives. one is to allow us to take a survey because feedback is necessary. the other was to let our house be used for pictures *if* we do all the windows. when he stepped out i told my wife he will come back and tell us he will be 'allowed' to give us those incentives for our area code. he said 'wave me in when you are done talking and i will come in and tell you what my boss said.' i waved him in quick and lo and behold! both incentives were 'allowed'' and he sat at the head of the table- we did not have a chair there, but he pulled a chair and sat there. i told my wife i was annoyed by that because we do not need to move chairs to the head of the table.

So how do you present your pricing? What kind of specials do you offer if any? Do you incentivize to close a sale?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
To present accurate pricing, we must take measurements of people's windows and determine what type of installation will be required. Once we have all of that information, we can print out a detailed estimate for the project. There is no reason for negotiation because our pricing is accurate and fair. We do offer a 5% discount for people who are willing to write a check instead of use a credit card because that saves us money. In most cases, we can give estimates on site during our visit.

Since you sell 20 different windows how do you avoid quoting pella, Anderson and Marvin at customer’s request so they can make an informed decision? Surely you’re questions pair it down to more than one window. Or do you hone in on one window and give general ranges for the others?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts 2 жыл бұрын
Even with many brands to choose from, there are typically only be a couple of products that suit our clients interest the best. That is the reason for having an appointment and spending some time in the discovery process. There is much more to this then just quoting pricing on windows. I think that is where many window companies fail. They have a window that they insist you buy from them regardless of its suitability to your needs.

This is absolute GOLD! I’m an outside sales rep for a bath remodeling company. Great company, but it’s this one call close nonsense. This is 2024 and in H-town, most people are hip to the 1980s tactics of “today and today only”. I previously sold windows for a well-known “factory direct” company from Florida, and they had a “one call close” approach that, the more you sell it for, the more you made. I didn’t like that. Hahahaha, “bounce up and down on the window”? I started out with that company! Good sir, if your company isn’t hiring for reps who appreciate your approach, do you know any companies in H-town who are that use a present-day, non-sleazy approach?

Caught this at the perfect time. Just had a sales guy over last night. Replacement windows. Reputable company. Wife kinda stuck on this brand in fact (she has some experience in the home building industry). And this guy wasn't super sleazy, but you mention a number of areas that resonate. 1. Start with a monumentally high price. Use a bunch of discounts to bring that down (even then it is shockingly high). 2. Said 60-90 minutes, and it was 2 1/2 hours (on a Friday evening at dinnertime). 3. Heat lamp through the glass samples to "prove" they work. 4. 0% down delayed payment option So the question is - if we like this company, can we recover this? The company gets decent ratings, the model is good (for how the installs work). Can I give them a cold-shoulder approach until they follow up and negotiate them down? Or is the initial approach a good enough sign we should look elsewhere?
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts Жыл бұрын
I would suggest completing your due diligence first. Once everything else checks out, make them an offer that is about 20% less than what they're offering you. I would make them come down multiple times before signing an agreement. If anyone else carries the same product, get another quote. If no one else carries the same product, you're probably getting screwed.

@@HoustonWindowExperts Thank you. We have 14 windows; we couldnt possibly afford what they wanted for all of them. (at their price) But ultimately, the "last deal of the night" (and he didn't hard sell us at the end.) was still 3K per window, for 8 windows. I live in the Balto DC area. I figure it is more likely that a 'good' price is closer to 2k a window. (for all 14 - these are all pretty standard doublehungs).

Some of tactics from Renewal by Anderson: All manufacturers raise price at same date by 5% in March, just a few days from now; Full cost of window install will be recouped by increase in sales prices of home; replacing windows will cut utilities by 50% when energy audit showed that I had to replace windows and more to achieve 50% reduction. @@HoustonWindowExperts Not impressed. The salesman was nice and the only real pressure selling that was done was on "double hung" windows and lifetime warranty. Did a soft play-down of other windows. I mentioned single hung more than once during our conversation and he would go back to the double hung. Sample window, NO STICKER. I asked about visibility rating, who manufactured there windows, what type of glass was used (I asked if it was Cardinal glass, he did not know), asked about the screen on the window, asked about the vinyl. At a later point he told me that I made him feel like he was on his first day of selling windows because he doesn't get these kind of questions. OH! and when I directed him to the table I took the head of the table chair. He was done after 1.5 hours. I thanked him for coming and told he that he had given me a lot to think about.

I do really want a new front bay window though. The window rattles in the wind and wind comes in around the sides. I don't have any issues with the rest of our windows but I do wonder something. Our house was built sometime in the '80s. I think they are double-hung vinyl windows. I read that most windows are good for about 20 years so does that automatically mean we will get good benefits if we get all new windows now or not?

Wow thank you Mr Jeff.. my wife called them for an estimate and she told me the first thing they said was “ is your husband gonna be there too” that I had to be present.So at first I thought why would I have to present what if I’m at work..so my wife told them I was and they asked what time I would be home so that they can show up when I’m there.. after watching your videos makes sense now..so again thank you for your honest reply Mr Jeff.

I owned my own business with my Folks years ago and we served the best food in our fine dining. That was our goal along with integrity. We were successful. Sadly more today only care about money and don’t care about integrity anymore.

My defense against a sleazy sales pitch is embedded deep inside of my sigma brain. Whether your title is a salesperson or you are a complete stranger, you are treated as a salesperson and ever more so if you are being excessively nice to me. I stand guard until I find a reason to fully trust you (this rarely happens). However, I try to be up front about what I know and make it clear that I don't want to waste our time but serious about doing business together. The discussion is to negotiate terms and price. Equally, I'm hesitant to fall for the low price tactics too as there may be hidden costs that level up in the end. You get what you pay for but can easily overpay in most situations. Understand what you are buying including what you want, what you need, what you don't, and stay clear of sleazy sales people by telling them you have done your homework and will not tolerate the pressure to sign anything. Most will back off and neutralize their approach. Most are scared as they were not trained to handle you. Some will keep going with their push. Send those folks on their way back to finish watching Glengarry Glen Ross DVD collection.

Awesome video and super relevant as I have a guy coming out to look at our windows in two days. I’ll def be taking the head of the table approach. Lol but also these techniques were similar to what I went through when I had two companies come out to do estimates for gutter grates. I’m a stonewall and sent em both away after their quote. Lol

@@HoustonWindowExperts This is a small local company so when I called I talked directly with the owner which makes me feel better their not just sending out some random salesman but I get he still wants the work. We have all wood windows now that are painted on the outside and just beat up and their stained on the inside so I’d like to keep that look I just want the vinyl finish on the outside so they don’t get anymore wear and tear. What’s a fair price for say a pella std window size, glass doesn’t matter to me, as Anderson’s are prob gonna be outta are price or what other company would you recommend. Single pane so it only goes up and down I don’t want the dbl where it flops open.

Heck now watching another of your vids I like the Windsor window better than pella. Hopefully this guy carries them.

You should check out Pella Lifestyles and Windsor Pinnacle. The closest product to what you described in the Andersen line would be the 400 series.

@@HoustonWindowExperts Allegedly the windows we have now are Anderson but they don’t have the name on em like I’ve come to know, my parents have Anderson windows and we have then in our four seasons room which was an ad on from the previous owners, so idk this house was built in 86 maybe Anderson didn’t plaster their name on stuff like they do now. I just wanna keep the stained wood interior look to match the trim we have while getting a window with protection on the outside.

If they can give 40% off the second that means my high start is 20% off every window, will work down from that. 😆😅

I was just given a quote of 51k for 18 windows. I won't mention company name but I will tell you they are nice windows. Broken down it would be 2800 per window. All double hung. I tell you, I hate going to the big box for windows but I might have to. I wish you were close to where I live.
