In my experience dissapointed/angry people really appreciated me being truthful with them. When people sense they are being lied to it can make them feel more justified in their agression. It takes time, but actually listening to them and explaining the actual reason they get refused gave me the best results. It sends a good message to the actual patrons watching as well. I'm the cooler type, if you can't talk your way out of a situation, don't do the job, bouncing (security) is about deescalating, not antagonizing. Always deflect, be calm, and personable. For me, what's always worked is; "I let you in here, now you're disrespecting everyone including me, and all wanted was to have a good time". Literally has them stop being angry and reflect on how they're effecting everyone else due to their own actions. It shows that you trusted them to behave inside, and they fucked up. A lot of people while drunk, are massive children, you have to treat them like a calm parent.

Rile #1 DO NOT TELL AN ANGRY PERSON...THAT YOU UNDERSTAND!
@Liberty-rn4wy
@Liberty-rn4wy Жыл бұрын
I find it very useful to say "hey man, i get frustrated too." I had an extremely angry guy confront me in a parking lot once on my job. He was very, very angry. I started talking and like the video says, it was not him vs me, it was us both understanding how things can get frustrating. I took him down, emotionally, just using empathy and words. He ended up shaking my hand and walking away. That thing you don't want say is "why are you so angry?" that is basically saying "your anger is not justified and you are defective for having it." That will enrage him. By saying, "Man, I get frustrated too" you are taking his side and depersonalizing it. I admit I got this from the book Verbal Judo.

Being calm no mater what he says is the hardest part of the job, for the new guys. I don't care what you call me your opinions don't mean anything to me - your nobody. Door man for 16 years I've been in a lot of fights, won them all because my back up was designated. your looking at me, talking to me, but the threat to you is standing behind you. now I have grabbed hundreds of drunks from behind and I have stood and traded punches, but that's called bad positioning or someone on your security team was out of position, it happens. 1 signal your bagged and tagged for removal. I have had many close calls and this job is not for everyone. I pride myself in never having to punch or kick someone unless they struck first. I am a first rate talker (PR) and can talk you down almost every time, even the drunks. However I train MMA weekly to stay fit and up with techniques. I been in 30 man brawls and the first thing you do in this situation (learned the hard way) is dont get tied up, dont go to the floor, let them fight, your job is to stop the beer bottles, pool cues and chokes taking place protect the by-standers. Stay mobile, out of the fight, catch punches, stop kicks, unless there's a weapon. I enjoy the job because its a challenge, and I like the action. Im only 5'10".....

Bouncers with gladly manhandle you when you're smaller than them. Reminds me of an instance many years ago at a club me and some buddies went to. There was this one dude who was absolutely massive. He stood around 7 foot perhaps and was big in built. He was arguing with two of the bouncers for some reason and you could clearly see that they were afraid of him. They would barely look him in the eye. I couldn't help but think, had it been a smaller guy, then they would have probably thrown him out or beat him up.
@deusexbaby5555
@deusexbaby5555 4 жыл бұрын
Intimidation is a huge factor. All the bouncers had to do (if they weren't driven by fear) is to grab his legs and throw him down. His height advantage goes out the window and his massive weight also will be his downfall. Literally. But intimidation can prevent the big guy from even being touched. Big guys have the advantage of reach but when shorter guys are closer it will be hard for those long, meaty limbs to do any damage. I wish bouncers would get training on how to take down bigger guys if it ever happened. And it would because big guys often are very confident due to almost everyone fearing them. And those guys know it and take advantage.

This is a sound, and perfectly legal, technique to subdue a physical threat before they have a chance to act. You don’t want the threat to have a chance to strike, but you can’t strike first for obvious reasons. Like any technique, it has to be practiced until it becomes reactionary. Simply watching someone do it and applying it without practice is a good way to get someone hurt, which is what I think some of the naysayers are getting at. Pushing someone back to make space gives them opportunity to strike, which escalates the confrontation to a fight. And the verbal deflection? A great technique to get the focus off of you and reducing the chance that you’ll get assaulted. Making confrontations personal is a good way to lose control and end up in a lot of altercations. No one respects an asshole. I’ve avoided a lot of needless physical altercations simply by saying “I get it, but my manager/bartender said...” and “I’m just doing my job...” Customers can respect that if they feel the bouncer is not bullying them or singling them out themselves. That being said...this is one of MANY techniques available to use as a bouncer. There is no 100% viable move that works for everyone. That’s why you should be training...to learn new techniques and to apply them in a safe setting to figure out what works comfortably for you.

Unfortunately the chokehold has been banned for both Security guards and police officers as of 2021. I do something similar to Masterlocks where I lock both arms behind the other guys arms to restrain them and that's perfectly legal. Someone showed it to me once and I have been trying it out for a while.

I was lucky. Did a little door work off and on, only at one bar, big super busy loud college bar, literally almost all college students. The manager did not want trouble. Interfered with the insane cash this place would take in. So he always had three if not four bouncers there, especially on game days, weekends, whatever. So on the rare occasion that a patron was getting too rowdy, needed to calm down or leave, the patron wasn’t talking to me, he was talking to a group of us. We were always super friendly, deescalating, hey man we know how it is and we are glad you’re here but you’ve got to bring your rowdiness down ok? that kind of thing. Almost always worked. If not we were really good at establishing pain compliance and walking the asshole straight out the door onto the sidewalk. This was done quickly and quietly. No brawls, no raised voices, overturned tables. Nothing to disrupt the sale of a nickel’s worth of beer for $2.25😂

Worked as a bouncer at a bar, where the majority of the customers were college students. It was a dual edged sword. If they walked in with say, $75 dollars, they would have about a dollar when they left (it cost $1.25) for the pool tables). HOWEVER, since they were 21-26 years old, they hadn't learned how to control their emotions, once they had a little "Irish courage" in their system. Even the girls could get damned violent if there was a boy's attention on the line. I'll stop right here, and spare you guys the "war stories."

“But, Your Honor, the guy in the video said to be the first one to strike.” I started bouncing at 18 in 1994. I still bounce on the weekends ... let me tell you, “be the first one to strike” is the worst advice I’ve ever heard - unless you’re dying to get some jail time, of course. Stick to the manrubbing, Kesting. Your real life stuff is going to land someone in deep, deep trouble.

Agree, door supervisors are trained under SIA to not attack first at all unless held at gun point or knife point. All licensing supervisors, close protection officers must follow sites/ and assignment tasks in on time with effortless conduct in physical handling. The rules and regulations in private security industry change every three years should they change then we should use correct rules we trained with and make sure they are to be applied at anytime, long as we are within the jurisdictional country then these regulations will continue. Doesn't matter if we are on or off duty, in jurisdiction the laws of reasonable force still apply and you still are under UK home office legislations surrounding the SIA that can change every 3 years and we are all trusted to act with integrity in all environments without delay 24/7. Yes, we are all watched and recorded by home office once we have a complaint off someone we handled, or off police and we are checked every once in three years. I have the close protection license, l am learning in a refresher course after every three years from renewing and we still are taught to only use necessary force as a last resort within immediate prevention in countering aggressors arm swings, quick punches, slaps, pushes, pointed weapons, leg kicks or grapples. The restraint is only when we are authorized by law not by public of escorting any criminal, attacker or nuisances away of the premises we cover or away from person we are assigned to protect all in all use of these should be non violent and same as taught in our training should it differ and we decide not to use what we were taught then we are held accountable and may have our licenses revoked. Basics of when to use a prepared self defense counter stance or readiness stance, we only allowed to use these stances to if aggressor acts with neglectful mind while use of illegally abuseful words or threatening words are coming consistently worrying to point of having likelihood that he or she may cause violence so we should get ready in stance to counter in a non violent force as last reasonable resort when attacker or nuisance becomes physically threatening than aggressive or hostile etc unreasonable to point of using armed weapon with endangerment to yourself or others where life may be lost then attacking first is still dependent on if the weapon is close and is being pointed at you. You should never attack first, unless you assessed going through being held at knife or gun point safely then the matter now becomes a hostility situation where powers of law is on you side should you attack first to disarm criminal and make safe then always do this in close range by luring you attacker near you so that it easier to get weapon of attacker or otherwise you risk you own life or others in process if you do nothing and dont attack first. If there more than one, and you on you own then don't be rambo but stay silent and wait for armed police to arrive after pushing you emergency code red button on you radio that is built for when you are compromised and held by one or more armed threats in a hostage situation like this, should this unlikely risk factor occur.

Nah I think he meant like if the dude was clenching hos first, making threatening glares, as in ''My posture and face expression is is warning you that if you don't let me in, I'm gonna swing''. I think he wasn't talking about the guy being red faced and angry, but more like the guy is making threats with his body language that he will brawl, so a bouncer just hastah get him in a position that immobilize him, and that swingbto the hold would feel fast, so the message would be ''I'm faster than you and stronger (he would feel if he doesn't know about leverages in jujitsi, he just thinks that he's hot as strong), and I can mess you up so just you know you shouldn't be giving me that atitude'. I think it was just misunderstood by saying attack first, if the guys makes threats to attack, you show him that you have total control over him

In practice you have to first indentify who is agressive. Is it a Random drunk guy, is he high if so on what, is it a junkie, drug dealer, etc etc... What reasons for him not entering is justified in his head, what is his capital of violence? These questions must process in the bouncers brain, at same time focus on him and surrounding. A bouncer can not put the reason on somebody else but the bouncers, not the manager , bar tenders or other staff.

Uh ok...this is not how normal bouncers act. Mostly, they prematurely kick out anyone that has had 3+ drinks, or perhaps closes their eyes for more than a second or two. Next come the guys that talk too fast. Neither are an actual threat - but why would a shift manager of a bar care??? Booze sales and smooth comments from his shift's staff are all he cares about...and all things he and his boss controls. premises I am truly sorry if you take this as offence. But I do not speak lies. Sincerely, Mark Wayman

Speaking as a bouncer for 6 years, btw. Words can solve 98% of everything. If you don't want an assault charge; they also have to put hands on you first, as a technicality. Don't take the job, if you can't take a hit.

Henry Leib that's not true. If you've tried to get away or getting away isn't possible, or they pose an immediate risk to you, you can absolutely strike first in self defense. A lot of that will come down to the discretion of the officer, and then a judge if the officer thinks you were wrong, but cops see a lot of shit for the most part they know what's up.

I was working in Liverpool as I normally do and basically a guy was harrasing women and he grabbed another guy by the throat so I stepped in I told him it's time to go he got agresive I went from behind him put him in a lock but I done it wrong in the heat of the moment so I ended up wrestling on the ground with him for about 2 minutes my radio flew across the dance floor, this guy must have been extremely high on cocaine, anyways I was on the ground he fell on my knee felt like it broke, even when back up came took 4 guys to control him, I didn't use my fists because I didn't want to escalate it, but he did get bloodied by the guys, I thought I'll die but I can laugh about it now because my pants ripped right across my ass 😂

Chokes are illegal, most states bouncers must be certified and if you are certified you would know you can not choke, punch or use joint locks. Must use an aggressive passive approach.

While true somewhat, there are absolutely ways to modify this and still be useful. For example my bread and butter for dealing with a hostile, nearing violence patron i removed is very very similar to this. I get this in but will not squeeze enough for the choke, my aim is to use enough strength to maintain it for the 1 second i need to back up a big step and rotate, given that the under the shoulder allows me to easily manipulate his torso. He is at that point rotated onto his stomach with me getting some kind of controlling mount and i now radio in for backup.
