TJ - I do recommend looking into chorus, flanger and phaser. They're all similar but different and each can be excellent. I use an analogue chorus and I love the deep shimmer it gives me.

The T-rex Octave pedal could add both an octave up and down at the same time. I used this to sort of emulate an organ sound om my bass. Also the pedal had a separate boost switch that worked separately so it could be used as a standalone clean boost.

I use delay on just a wee bit to give me a bit of reverb and it helps cover my mistakes a bit. I also use compression as a booster.

Mate speaking of pedals that are supposedly not what you are using it for, I love chorus and specifically the detune mode of the whammy if for me I would use a whammy only for the detune mode but I have no space or money so in addition to all the chorus that I was gathering over the years I found in the Mooer pitch box the detune mode and when I tried it and started using it ... I was super happy with a pedal that does not occupy a place, I could use 2 or 3 more choruses and it also sounds very very good, not everybody will agree but it is a great solution to the problem of space in a large pedalboard and since you cannot buy more expensive pedals this is an excellent solution....

This isn't a pedal effect per se, but my favorite "chorus" by far is a frequency shifter. They have hardware versions (expensive), but I've only used them in a DSP environment. The trick is to use a shift under 2Hz or so at

You can make your delay as a flanger if it has modulation and a time repeat as low as 1-5 mili seconds. Increase the feedback. Phaser is another underrated pedal that mimics others.

I have the Digitech Bass Multi Chorus, and I'm pretty happy with the tone. However, it seems really show it's worth when you are putting overdriven tones into it, anything from a little grit or mild fuzz to Peter Steele levelsof distortion. I sounds to me like the pedal is accentuating the higher range, so as not to muddy up the lows with chorus, which would explain the anemic clean tones but brighter overdrive tones.
@WhichBass2 жыл бұрын
I would agree it does well by not getting muddy. Maybe because it's Q for lack of a better term is a very specific band.

ive tried a few options for bass chorus and while ive never tried the delay trick, the boss CEB-3 is perfect for me but im also a fan of the JHS 3 series chorus if im using a DI for the low end
@WhichBass3 жыл бұрын
I just want to try all delays, that's clever splitting the low end. I need to try that.
@hipsterscout13 жыл бұрын
@@WhichBass i almost always take a split before the pedals so i get a nice clean low end (which i then compress), and then cut the bass control on the amp altogether so all the pedals only effect the mids and highs. this really cleans up the mud especially when you start adding overdrive or fuzz which tend to mess up the low end.
@CarlosKTCosta3 жыл бұрын
Dude, you just have to try the Trimode Chorus on the series 7 Ibanez pedals, is amazing on bass The Nemesis Delay has an amazing pitch shifting feature in it. I frequently used it as a doubler or just an Octave pedal. Since it can make two independent shifts it also works as a synth. Also, I use the EHX Black Finger as a tube overdrive / saturator and not really as a compressor
@WhichBass3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carlos, I had a look at the Trimode, it sounds great! I'll have to keep looking for a bass demo. I like the sound of the Nemesis too! That's a great use of the Black Finger! Nice find!

You can substitute the Boss BF-2 flanger for a chorus by turning down the feedback setting. But in all I love the Boss CE-2 Chorus Ensemble. It’s very tweakable. I’ve tried a few Digitech stomp boxes and am not a huge fan. Boss just are much higher quality. The DD-3 or it’s more modern iterations is a great stomp box delay. Justin Chancellor uses all of those boss modulations for a reason (but you already knew that 😜).
@WhichBass2 жыл бұрын
Good call with the Flanger! I mean a Flanger is a slow chorus so it works both ways! I may have knew that about Justin once upon a time, thanks for reminding me haha.
@cheenu7113 жыл бұрын
I actually prefer a bucket brigade style delay to actual reverb. Setting up the delay for a slapback around 150 ms or so and then adjusting the echo to my taste actually gives me a huge sound. I use the behringer delay because I had one lying around but will upgrade to boss DM2w soon.
@WhichBass2 жыл бұрын
I'd agree, it's hard to explain but I prefer that digital-esque feel to it. Maybe it's a "modern" sound I've grown up with.

I loved that bass line you played over that backing track, did you write it yourself or is it from an already existing song because it sounded awesome. As for the matter of the video, I never thought of using a delay pedal as a chorus so that was really interesting to learn and as for pedals I currently have, I once used a Boss BF-3 Flanger and a CH-1 Super Chorus to get a sort of weird Electric Mistress-type of sound which actually sounded kinda cool
