I am also a fellow of British Horological Institute my advice is that before oiling any clock it is important that the movement is thoroughly cleaned - if you just oil without cleaning than oil and dirt mixed will cause further wear.

Favor for someone who appreciates clocks, look up lubrication techniques. Over oiling a clock can actually wreck a clock. The oil is held in by capillary action, when there is too much oil the capillary action actually pulls out the oil out leaving the sinks dry. Good luck, beautiful clock!

Yes, I actually got it through by tying some yarn to it and threading it upward with a crochet hook with one hand while moving the cog-thing to catch the chain with the other. Maybe not the standard approach, but it worked XD

I moved and we took the weights off as directed and packed them. We removed the pendulum and carefully moved it. While putting the pendulum back together, one of the medal strings that holds the middle weight came loose and one end is hanging down. What can I do to correct this situation??

I think if we lay the clock down on the floor and then oil that will help, if we oil while standup position most of the oil drip down instead of going into the shaft or where it needs to go. But good video and time is money.

it was lack of service , it had oil that had turned to a gooey substance , I actually removed the movement , sprayed it with CRC braklene , and re oiled the movement , has worked for 3 years flawlessly lol

I think it is dark stained oak actually , it's just a 4k clock , if it was made of mahogany it would be worth far more lol , I had to look high and low to find this one , the company that made it has been gone for years now , and it was the exact clock I was looking for , drove a whole day to go fetch it too lol

Mine (was my late mother's) refused to wind too. What you said made me look for an answer today as to whether the weights are locked. I could not get them to start up the clock; no matter how many times I wound it by moving the pendulum. Today, after numerous tries; I opened the side of the clock, reached in and moved a little lever that corresponds to the minute hands to rest against the upper part of the pendulum... and 'voila!', darn clock started ticking (the little minute keeper -- watchamacallit). It's working! The hour and minute hands on the clock are finally moving too. Excellent! I'm super excited. Hope it continues to function. I put it on "silent" because the chimes are super annoying, though. Have to say, I'm sorry I didn't try to learn more about how to care for this clock... now I know that I have to wind it every 8 days ;-) -- (when the weights descend). Hope to keep taking good care of this clock. I was going to sell it; now I've gotten to know a bit; I think I'll keep it. As an aside... I notice something I never noticed over the years (had it for about 12 years!): the little filigrees on the clock face are missing from the top corners. They must have fallen and no one noticed... have been looking for it. It's an Ethan Allen Grandfather clock; if anyone knows where I can get those. No luck so far. clean it very well , and lube all the bearing surfaces of the shafts with a light oil like gun oil , and hope for luck , most I have fooled with are just gummed up with old oil that has turned to goo bringing them to a stop ...

Hi I have an emperor grandfather clock but when we moved and detached the weights didnt realize the weights went on in certain order and put them back probably incorrectly but the worst part is i pulled up the chain too much and the weight is up to high so i cant get it off the top is too tight against the surface any suggestions ?

+jane mateya The reels that chain or cable wounds around have a spring click that makes it to wind manually in one direction. You need to push down on the spring which is on one side of the reel. Once pushed down, it will release the lock and reel cab be turned to lower your weight.
