In 2004 I was 12 years old and I LOVED Ed, Edd n Eddy so much I wrote to Danny Antonucci at AKA and told him how much I loved his cartoon, 3 months later a package showed up with an animation cel of Kevin holding a bag of popcorn from the episode with the rocket car in it and a note from Danny thanking me for watching his show. My parents framed that animation cel and it hangs on my wall today 20 years later, made my day as a kid.

I don't mean to be "that guy," but is there a source for this? I've heard this claim in a few different places, but I've never seen any confirmation, and it doesn't seem to really add up with Cartoon Network's occasional use of Ed, Edd, n Eddy in spin off products that I don't think AKA has any involvement with. Are people confusing creative control with ownership?

I don't know where you got that information from. And i would advise that please don't spread misinformation. A simple Google search will show you that the ED, EDD N EDDY Trademark is registered to CARTOON NETWORK, INC. - Registration Number 3579778 - Serial Number 77521052. Not AKA Cartoon. So Cartoon Network own complete rights over Ed Edd N Eddy, and they have sole decision to make reboots, movies, or whatever without his permission or involvement.

"Dormant" would probably be the more appropriate word in this case. "Stagnant" implies they kept going *long* after Ed Edd n' Eddy ended, pushing out increasingly mediocre and unremarkable products as they become shell of their former selves.

I feel like Cartoon Network failed this franchise. Not nearly as badly as they fumbled Sheep in the Big City. But when you look at Ed, Edd n Eddy, a popular IP, the merchandising is virtually non-existent. There isn't much. It took 20 years just for them to make a t-shirt. Whereas their other IPs like Ben 10, Steven Universe, The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time, all have lots of merch out there. Spongebob, The Simpsons, Paw Patrol, Dora, Bluey, etc, have been able to have this enduring legacy because of how well those franchises are marketed. The Flintstones make more money from selling vitamins, and fruity pebbles in a single year, than they ever did with 60 years worth of their shows, toys, and movies combined. But gor Ed³, there's very few toys and video games, no books, basically nothing to really showcase the franchise. It took them 25 years just release the DVD, and even that's not a complete series.
@matededdneddy
@matededdneddy 5 ай бұрын
I agree as someone who grew up in the golden age of cartoon network this was my favorite cartoon network show and it really got the short end of the stick, besides the lack of merch the show didn't get its first home media release until 2004 didn't even get vhs tapes like the other cartoon cartoons on top of that for some reason Taiwan of all countries got the more consist dvd releases with seasons 3 4 and 5 releasing on dvd sets while the us stopped at season 2 until the almost complete collection in 2022, after the jim samples era ended in 2007 the show became an after thought with season 6 being very short and the movie not coming to the us until november while demark and other places had the movie first, after the show ended and in the mid 2010s the show pretty much didn't air anymore and it wasn't until adult swim made the checkered past block when the show finally came back on tv. As for video games the series was only showcased in two gba crossover games with other cartoon shows and only one mainline console game with the rest being handheld they didn't even appear in punch time explosion nor the cartoon network racing game on ps2 on top of that the games were mediocre at best. Yeah it really sucks that cartoon network long running original show got treated like this they deserved better especially when cartoon network did nothing for the edboys 20th anniversary which would've been the best time to release the complete series on dvd and blu-ray and actually put effort into it. The fans did a better complete series dvd and blu-ray for the eds than warner bros did officially cause at least the fans included the specials and the movie.

@@matededdneddy I felt that same way about Disney, and how they completely fumbled Disney 100. The put out a short, that was mid at best. It was literally just, "Hey, memba this character? Well here he is, and he's doing that thing he did in the movie. But we were to cheap to get Eddie Murphy or Tom Hanks, so they arent gonna speak." And I just thought, that's it? Celebrating your centennial anniversary is a milestone, and only ever happens once. You would've thought they would've gone all out. Not that I'm some big Disney fan, but that should've been their bragging year. Coincidentally, WB also celebrated their centennial last year too, and they did even less than Disney. The Ed, Edd, n Eddy brand should be much, much bigger, for how popular the show was 20+ years ago. The Powerpuff Girls toys are still selling today. You have to ask yourself, why were there no toys on store shelves? There has to be a crazy BTS story about that. Because every cartoon makes toys. It's a prerequisite. Why were there no plush? Why were there no books? Why were there no t-shirts? It's not like CN didn't know how to do it. They were doing it superbly with PPG. I remember going to the Toys R Us in Times Square in the early 2000s (boy I miss that place. it was huge it was 6 floors, and had a full size giant ferris wheel inside), and they had an entire section for the Powerpuff Girls. Not just a PPG aisle. A whole section, at least 10 aisles worth of PPG toys. And the section was themed too, with the signature pink, blue, and green fly lines of the girls. It was awesome. So CN knew how to market the PPG brand. There was also a PPG movie movie coming out at the time, so they went even wilder with the marketing. Why wasn't there an Ed Edd n Eddy section? If not a section, why not an aisle. Or even a single toy on the shelf, on one of the aisles? They had a Rugrats section, a Barbie section, Blue's Clues section, a superman section, a batman section, etc. There's really no excuse, other than CN didn't seem to value the brand. But I know that's not true, because when you look at the promo material on CN at the time, the Ed's were all over CN. They frequently hosted Cartoon Cartoon Fridays, they had music videos (My Best Friend Plank), lots of bumpers with the Ed's. The Ed's had and appeared in just as many bumpers as the Powerpuff Girls did. Now obviously the promotional team for the channel and the merchandising department are two separate things. But the people running the bumpers and promo stuff for CN really valued the Ed's, and saw that their brand was pivotal to the network's success.

@@jaretco6423 that's what everybody wants. You want any IP to become a cultural touchstone. When Star Wars went to all the big toy companies at the time, everyone rejected them, saying movies don't sell toys. They eventually went to a struggling company called Kenner, and Kenner decided to bet it all, and literally risked everything they had to take a chance on this unknown movie. And it paid off huge. The same thing happened with Star Wars itself. Every single studio laughed George Lucas out of the building when he was pitching, including Disney. Fox only agreed to distribute the movie because they had liked George's other movie he had did for them, called American Graffiti. But because they were sure it was gonna be a colossal flop, they didn't want anything to do with Star Wars, and they just let George Lucas retain all the rights to it. That was a mistake that cost them billions, and made George Lucas the richest mogul in Hollywood history. I remember when I worked at the movie theater, all of the Star Wars posters, standees, and promotional materials had to be sent back directly to Lucasfilm. And we weren't allowed to keep it. Normally we would just take home the posters we wanted, or give them away to moviegoers who asked for one. But I remember having to tell them, sorry, we can't give away any Star Wars posters, they all have to be returned to Lucasfilm.

This one and SpongeBob because those comedic timings and sound effects were perfect for an imaginary fan game I wish I would've made. I think people should be allowed to be creative. But there's a difference between creative freedom, and being completely unhinged. When you work for Cartoon Network, or any other company, understand one thing, you're an *employee.* You were hired to make your employer money. And since they're your boss, you play by their rules. In 2024, there's no more excuses. You have all the tools to do it independently. That's the only way you can truly have complete creative control. If you choose to sell your idea to a company and they buy it, it's their IP now, not yours. And you play by their rules. And that company has a certain reputation they need to keep and uphold to a set of cerain standards that fits their brand. The Ren and Stimpy Show is a great example of a creator being completely unhinged and destroying a franchise beyond repair. A lot of people don't know this, but the first big hit Nicktoon was not Rugrats. It was The Ren and Stimpy Show. Ren and Stimpy was an immediate hit right out the gate. Toys were selling great, shirts were selling great, VHS sales were amazing. But John K kept becoming more and more difficult to work with, to the point where his employer, Nickelodeon, had to straight up fire him. That's when Rugrats began to blow up in popularity, by doing things right. Which led to a giant balloon in the Thanksgiving parade (the one originally planned for Ren and Stimpy), and their own theatrical movie (the movie originally planned for Ren and Stimpy), which went to become (at the time) the highest grossing animated movie based on a cartoon series of time (the Simpsons movie later took that record). John K then became even more unhinged as an independent artist after that. And for whatever reason, 10 years after he was fired, Comedy Central not only re-hired John K, but gave him free creative control to make a new season of The Ren and Stimpy Show the way he had always intended on making it. And what we got from that, is Adult Party Cartoon. One of the most awful, unfunny, reviled, and downright hated things ever produced. And for some even more insane reason, instead of burying it, and hoping people would forget about it, Comedy Central released it on DVD. And this was during a time when DVDs were bigger than Jesus. So the people who were fortunate enough to have missed Adult Party Cartoon when it aired on television, now had to the chance to be completely disgusted, and appalled. And a lot of people bought that DVD, because back then people would buy DVDs of literally anything. Netflix was literally a DVD rental company. And of course, when fan of The Ren and Stimpy Show saw that there were "new" episodes of The Ren and Stimpy Show for the first time in over a decade, they jumped on the chance to buy the DVD, and witnessed the extreme debauchery and abhorrent nature of the content firsthand. And it turned a lot of people off. And the Ren and Stimpy brand has never fully recovered. And looking at Danny's early stuff, and his bitterness and disdain towards children's cartoons, it's good that he didn't have complete creative control. Yes, creativity should be encouraged. But S&P exists for a reason. People watching Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network don't necessarily want inappropriate stuff being put in their kids programming. I never understood that concept of trying to get things past the censors. This isn't the 1960s anymore. There are many companies and avenue ls you can go down to be as dirty, and filthy as you want. If you want that, go to onlyfans. But don't put that on youtube kids.

I never appreciated that. Even as a kid, I didn't like it. It's one of the things that Spongebob artists took from Ren and Stimpy, were the closeups of gross things, like armpits or nose hair. I feel like there's a place for all creativity to exist. No matter how gross, or explicit it is. But make sure it's the appropriate place for it. It's one thing to bring a gun to gun range. It's another thing to bring it to an elementary school.

For those who don't know about the '3 hair lines', years ago when eene was relavant, there used to exist a flash game, it was called something the lines of "Ed Edd n Eddy food fight!", in the game when You beat a level as Edd he will throw his hat showing he has 3 hair lines. Though the game was actually non-canon. But now we know he is bald like some of the other kids
