Dino’s Tinker Shed, S4, Ep3, How a motorcycle electrical system works, part 2 CHARGING SYSTEM
In this episode, we are going to explore and test the components of the Suzuki DR650 charging system. Much of this will apply to other motorcycles other than the values you would look for in the testing.
Electrical can be challenging and I hope this video provides some help if your charging system is not functioning correctly.
I would like to point out that I am not a mechanic but am just a guy that likes to tinker so please do not take what I am saying as gospel and if unsure consult the service manual for the full procedures.
I have included time code chapters below to help you skip through the video if you like.
TIME CODE CHAPTERS:
00:00- Cold Opening
01:00- Introduction
01:21- Overview
03:29- Regulated voltage test
05:07- Connectors and grounds
07:00- How to use Di-electric grease
09:48- How to disconnect the battery
10:44- Cleaning the battery
11:42- No load battery test
13:05- Battery initialize
14:01- Parasitic draw test
19:30- Charging system overview
20:42- Alternator testing
27:33- Regulator rectifier testing
32:15- RM stator
32:48- Summary

Well done on a tricky subject that has most people running in fear. Especially tackling the dielectric grease debate which you nailed! Food for thought on low resistance readings, zero your leads first. Take a reading when shorting the leads and subtract that from the actual reading. Some meters have a 'Zero' or 'Rel' function that will do that for you. Most multi-meters suck at low resistance readings so you need all the help you can get. Cheers from Sussex NB!

Thank you for the great comment and information. I'll see if my meter has the zero function before the next instalment. Thanks again for this comment and all the past great info you have shared. Dino

Thanks again for another great video! A video idea in this series or something to include in a video would be how to disconnect the sidestand switch! I sure would appreciate it. Be safe and looking forward for the next video! :)

Great video, Just a comment My 2001 Suzuki SV650S that I have owned for 23 years had a RR problem. I was cheap and bought a $23 aftermarket one. The aftermarket one gave me problems not because the diodes in it were bad, but because the spade connectors in it were thin and flimsy and didn’t make could connection with the stator wire side. In the last few years, most of the electrical problems I had on my very reliable Japanese bikes were from bad connection and not a bad component. I think this is very important to iterate.

Hello Dino, I've been enjoying your videos since I discovered them last year and it's been great. Being a DR owner myself I'm naturally very interested in your content and it has helped a lot. Do you think the manual you're using still applies at large in the pre-96 bikes ? I happen to have the E-starter 95 version.

Thank you for the question and the comment. I really can't comment on it as I have only owned the 2009 that I have. I think this is a better question for the Drrider forum. I wish I could be more helpful but I do not want to give the wrong answer as there was major changes in 1996. Thanks again. Dino
