I will never forget that day. I was cabin crew for a British airline at the time and on that day, we were on the stand right next to the German Wings aircraft. We even followed it to the runway and took off just after it. We learned of the crash when we landed back in Gatwick. We speculated about what may have caused the crash, not for one second thinking it was deliberate. When the cause was announced, it literally shook all of aviation to the core. As cabin crew, we trust our pilots to keep us all safe and together, we are like family. To think that one of the people we trust so much would do that, was unimaginable. I, and many other of my colleagues were so deeply shocked, how could he have done that, not just to his passengers but to his fellow crew?

Maybe but I think the video encourages us to think a bit more deeply about where responsibility lies, who we expect to take responsibility, whether we punish them if they are then incorrect, and how legal and cultural factors get in the way of the ideal of people being open, honest and responsible all the time. You're a pychiatrist, you have to balance the responsibility to share information with relevant authorities if you believe a patient may harm themself or others with the responsibility to keep information confidential if a patient poses no harm. A psychiatrist who breaks this confidentiality without good reason risks losing their career. It's easy to say now that they did have good reason and should have broken confidentiality, but were they confident enough in their assessment that he shouldn't be flying to risk their whole career over? I come from a city nearby Düsseldorf. Some of the kids that went on the field trip to spain were from a school in my city. Two of my teachers were parents to two of the kids on that plane. I still remember the new going around in our school in 2015. Everyone was feeling so sorry for the teachers who just lost their kids. I can still remember seeing them in the hallway of the school. I still remember their faces. They were completely devastated. One of them still continued lecturing at our school, while the other one resigned ☹☹

This is one of the saddest stories I know. A pilot as well as a flight attendant I know were frequently flying this route. It is burned into my memory and will be there forever.

@km077 I don't think it was out of respect so much as it was trying not to glorify the killer. American media had an issue with only really focusing on the name of the murderer when someone commits something like a mass shooting. So now you have idiots that commit mass shootings with the idea that it'll get people to notice them. I think people have learned from this, and so, try to focus more on the victims and their families.

I believe the FAA was more at fault here then the pilot, I am not trying to justify the pilot’s actions or belittle the victims that died on that plane. The FAA was too lenient with him and swept his mental illness under rug, he lied about not having a mental illness on the psychological screening, in fear of his mental illness jeopardising his career and when caught admitted to having depression in the first place, yet he was still allowed to fly! he also appeared to be suffering from more than depression with his hallucinations, heck, maybe he was a psychotic homicidal killer. When this happened in 2015 it was all over the media in Germany for weeks. I remember this plane crash in particular being very shocking and depressing to me. I was imagining the passengers and pilot realizing what was going on and being unable to do anything about it. Especially because I had a school trip to London by plane 3 years prior it especially felt relatable when I heard that there was a school trip group on the plane. When it came out that the copilot crashed the plane on purpose it was especially shocking and scary, I think the feeling many people had after this was somewhat similar to how people felt after 9/11. Also, one of the worst horrors of plane crashes that often gets overlooked is all the workers who have to dig up the human body parts from the crash site for burial, this must be so traumatizing for them. Sometimes I wonder if it would be better to leave the body parts buried in the rubble and declare the entire crash site a graveyard instead of traumatizing more people in the process of digging them up.

I think we are at a point in technological advancements now, where it doesn't seem unrealistic to develop a computer pilot which takes full control of the plane when it detects erratic and possibly crash-inducing behavior by human pilots. Unfortunately, this is a particular case which is impossible to fully prevent because you can never know what's going on inside a human's head. But the implementation of such a system (coupled with remote control technologies for the landing) can give the passengers and the rest of the crew onboard a surviving chance.

I remember when this happened. The pilot basically committed suicide, but decided to bring all those on board down with him. He makes any person who courageously battles mental illness or depression in private and wants to become a pilot afraid to go to a psychologist, because people will think he's gonna do the same. He ruined it for everyone.
@IndieSamurai1017 ай бұрын
Calling this a suicide is quite the understatement. It was a mass murder.

Nobody who is battling any sort of illness at all, mental, physical, whatever, should be allowed to be a pilot. The ability to kill hundreds, perhaps thousands of people with one poor decision or failure of the body is simply too much to risk. It sucks but it is what it is.
@lprisco6 ай бұрын
@@I_am_nobody999 seems like a short-sighted, reactionary, and discriminatory approach since not all types of illnesses would affect one's ability to be a pilot. Its far too easy to stretch this kind of thinking into any profession where the person in question has some kind of power over another. Safeguards with redundancy are more important than blanket bans, because they don't address the underlying issue. It takes no fault away from the co-pilot to say that this was a massive systematic failure, ironically driven by the stigmatisation of mental health. Besides plenty of people who commit horrid acts don't have any illnesses.

@Nuurix5 ай бұрын
@@I_am_nobody999 this way of thinking favors these kind of tragedies.. imagine you are actually mentally conditioned, you notice that and then are scared to notify any authorities. Instead of comdemning every pilot with depression, the right approach would be to actually encourage pilots with mental conditions to seek help. That help should not revoke their license and thus their lifehood. Maybe if Lubitz knew that getting help would not revoke his license, he would have seeked out for help and be treated. If the treatment is unsuccessfull, then you can revoke the license until he is well again or forever. Its important for pilots to have the same right for treatment as any other profession, because otherwise people will always hide their sickness in fear of losing their profession and lifehood.

For everyone thinking that this man killed himself and took 144 other souls with him because he had a depression: he may have had one, but the fact that he was seeing lights and was even diagnosed with an "emergent psychosis" says that at that point he was at the beginning of a Schizophrenia, which is a totally different class of mental illness. I've suffered from severe a Depression along with anxiety disorders through most of my teen years (finally recovered at almost 20), and i've got to say that it never even crossed my mind to take others life. When you are depressed, you can't really feel anything but your pain. Your world gets smaller, and you often have the feeling that you just want to disappear on the spot. But there is a clear line between wanting to end your own suffering and taking the life of others. A depression is about oneself, you don't want to damage others, instead just to end the pain inside. I feel really sorry for all the lives that were lost that day, i remember reading about it in the news when i was younger. I strongly encourage everyone who feels that something isn't right with their emotions to get help. It may sometimes feel pointless, but it is really worth, there is a way out. And while i appreciate the privacy laws we have here in Germany, there is a saying: your rights end when you (are about to) break the rights of others. The laws are clear in that regard, and i know that my therapist would have acted accordingly if i've would have expressed any intention of harming others, and i'm fine with how it is.

@@DeltaAssaultGamingcrazy people should receive effective mental health treatment and a good support system so they don’t get locked up and get worse. Going to prison doesn’t usually help people with mental disorders. Especially if they get put in solitary confinement.

This topic is always so hard to watch. One of the teachers of my high school back then was the mother of one of the school girls who died during the accident. She received the message while working and broke down in class. To make things even worse, her other daughter was diagnosed with some kind of cancer some time after this, not sure if she recovered from it. I can't understand how one person/family can have so much bad luck, it's such a tragedy.

This really scarred me. My brother had gone to Spain on a school trip, and I had gone to Germany a year after him. To think this could have happened to us is scary

Regardless of the perspective, it's crucial to acknowledge that ending one's life in a way that involves strangers, traumatizes families, or negatively affects others is an act of deep selfishness. It's not about who gets triggered, but about considering the aftermath. If, hypothetically, someone were to take their life (which I strongly discourage), at least choose a method that minimizes the impact on loved ones and strangers alike. Let's remember the Germanwings flight incident - a painful reminder of the far-reaching consequences that such selfish actions can have on everyone involved.

I think its safe to say that the copilot was too severely sick to consider any of that, being extremely depressed, suicidal and also in the early stages of a psychosis. That doesn't change that he chose the worst way to go, taking innocent people to the grave with him. What the copilot did cannot be excused, but I don't believe it is productive in any way to just label him as a cold-blooded and psychopathic killer. He desperately needed help, and both himself and the mental health professionals involved should have stopped him from ever being on that plane. This was an entirely avoidable tragedy.
@HieronymousLex Жыл бұрын
@@purplecat1691no way, you see all the time in suicides the person trying to minimize the impact on others. It’s a matter of whether you’re a sociopath or not. This guy was probably just a bad person, depressed or not, and wanted to bring other people down with him, literally. And if there’s a hell he’s burning in it

@@HieronymousLexyeah, he died as a pathetic murderer. Depressed or not, he murdered all those people and caused lifelong grief to who knows how many more. He also murdered an entire school class. I understand depression takes us to dark places, but there's no mitigating factors for someone that kills so many.

The decision to take your life is not easy.. When and how? Will it hurt? Maybe it was easier for him that way. He wont be the only one dying in that Crash. Like you have to cross a dangerous bridge and lots of people aswell. Who will be the first crossing the bridge? You have the guts for it? Easier when everyone is crossing the bridge at the same time.

Still remember that news, horrible thing to happen and just remind everyone with mental health problems that please seek help and don't give in into those feelings. I know it's one of the best things I've done. While not knowing anyone on that plane, a colleague and friends of mine was on that exact route exactly one week prior. Gives you a chill on how easily life can be taken from you...

One thought that came to my mind was that it's probably not good for future pilots to be afraid of being sorted out because of a mental illness they might have or have had in the past. For most people in this profession, flying is the absolute dream, and so some (like those on flight 9525) are willing to hide such mental problems. I don't know what the checks are like, but I suppose one can be careful about what to say and what not to say. Anyway, a great start for this channel, I'm excited to see what's to come :)

I’m sure many thousand pilots fly with depression on the regular and pose no threat. That isn’t to say it shouldn’t be addressed, but tens of millions of people live with depression and basically zero of them are killers. I don’t know that there is a right answer what to do here. Fire all pilots with a history of depression? No, because that will lead to pilots hiding issues. Let them fly as long as they are medicated? Idk. Assume they’ll not suicide the plane because there are a million other ways to off yourself without taking dozens/hundreds with you? Who knows. There will never be a silver bullet. Although this one was pretty egregious that the FAA allowed the guy to fly despite a history of unquestionable lying and not about his height or weight.
