You're right that neglect causes a lot of these failures... Also BS ENGINEERING AND PARTS that just aren't made to last. All these variable cam timing engines are in theory if oil changes are done every 3-5k... And on and on... But all these tiny orifices that oil has to travel through and lifters that operate 2 pushrods .... Stop trying to fix something that isnt broke.I mean auto manufacturers not Dave's shop or any other shop.

They apparently have enough money that they don't care how much it costs to repair. Must be nice. Myself, the newest vehicle i drive is an 01 expedition 5.4 2v. As new as I'm willing to go. I can still fix most things in my driveway. Too time consuming and it goes to my ford tech who opened his own shop after working for a ford dealer for 30 years. And he's honest, doesnt charge outrageous prices or "fix" things that doit need it.

I went to school to study diesel in 1977, we were taught if there were a catastrophic failure a motor needed to be disassembled and cleaned - the way you do at your shop, not just a wipe-down after spraying with solvent. A catastrophic failure is destruction of parts like we see on those rollers.

When I had my transmission replaced I had them also do the rear main on the engine. They only charged me the price of the seal. The fact is that if you’ve got things as far apart as this on that engine you might as well replace all the wear items, the parts are cheap and you already paid the labor to get there.
@seanstephens38965 сағат бұрын
I feel for this guy, I went through the exact same issue on my used 2014 6.7. Carfax looked great, but it wasn’t until the engine was out Ford needed the block casting numbers for the warranty we realized it was a used 2012 block. Carfax won’t show shadetree mechanics. Of course I went to a “friend” and shop owner who replaced with a new Ford long block. Honestly paid more for that than going through Dave. I stumbled on Dave’s KZbin after the fact or else being 30 miles North I would have taken my truck to him. Everything has a manufactured defect, in this case the extended oil changes suggested is that manufactured defect. They can’t keep making money if nothing breaks.

Hahahaha!!! You tell 'em Dave @ 8:15 and beyond for a few!! A lot of people, even some mechanically smart people, just don't get how important it is to tear it completely down and start from fresh once you have had metal debris flying through the engine.!!! CRITICAL!!! I used to run into the same problem with people who didn't want to spend the money way back in the day on their two-stroke PWC. Same thing. They have a failure of some sort, burn it down, you can see the head and top of the piston has been bouncing pieces of the piston ring all over the place and they want you to just blow it out and put it back together. (you know what I'm saying) No way!! Also, at this point in the game, most of Dave's customers know the type of work they do. Yeah, you can get it done a lot cheaper at many different places, but you are not getting the quality and attention to detail that you're getting at Dave's with him, and just as importantly, the WHOLE CREW. If I was in his area and needed something done that I couldn't handle, I'd be willing to be part of his clientele because I know what I want and that's that. If anybody thinks that Dave is selling people things they don't need, pay the fee for the analysis and then take it somewhere else. Guaranteed it won't be as good. Rock on everybody at Dave's Auto in Centerville Utah. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅

There's gotta be more to it. Like low oil pressure, intermittent oil supply, collapsing oil filter, maybe an oil gallery restriction. It's not common to have several lifters with excessive wear and it's not common to have multiple cam lobes with excessive wear. Along with main and rod bearings showing signs of trying to spin. Bearings spin because of contact. But with oil pressure rod and main journals never touch their bearing, instead riding on an oil film maintained by pressure. Maybe the maintenance wasn't good and when noise started, the engine got a couple quick oil changes making the sludge situation look better. Old Marine Diesel Rebuilder

It's the cost of getting to it, once you get to a certain mileage and if you don't catch it early enough by doing oil tests it's not worth it. If you're 30,000 mi and you somehow heard it and caught it early sure but 200,000 is too far, just rebuild it If you plan on keeping it

Those last few moments showing the mains where the bearings spun suggests an align boring is needed. Yes, that is a lot of money that needs to be spent, but let's not forget that there are two aspects to this. One is the lack of maintenance, and the other is insufficient design engineering.
