You're right that neglect causes a lot of these failures... Also BS ENGINEERING AND PARTS that just aren't made to last. All these variable cam timing engines are in theory if oil changes are done every 3-5k... And on and on... But all these tiny orifices that oil has to travel through and lifters that operate 2 pushrods .... Stop trying to fix something that isnt broke.I mean auto manufacturers not Dave's shop or any other shop.

They apparently have enough money that they don't care how much it costs to repair. Must be nice. Myself, the newest vehicle i drive is an 01 expedition 5.4 2v. As new as I'm willing to go. I can still fix most things in my driveway. Too time consuming and it goes to my ford tech who opened his own shop after working for a ford dealer for 30 years. And he's honest, doesnt charge outrageous prices or "fix" things that doit need it.

I went to school to study diesel in 1977, we were taught if there were a catastrophic failure a motor needed to be disassembled and cleaned - the way you do at your shop, not just a wipe-down after spraying with solvent. A catastrophic failure is destruction of parts like we see on those rollers.

Hey Dave, my 2014 powerstroke did the same thing. I believe its a casting problem on the 13-15s and is almost always on the passenger side. My rocker arms (pivot arm assembly) had excess lateral play that I believed caused the rockers to pop out then send the hydraulic cam lash adjusters out. Truck had 180k miles on it when I found that lash adjuster in the oil pan. New rocker assemblies, pushrods, lifters, and lifter retainers and I am 40k miles on it with clean oil analysis every 5k miles.

When I had my transmission replaced I had them also do the rear main on the engine. They only charged me the price of the seal. The fact is that if you’ve got things as far apart as this on that engine you might as well replace all the wear items, the parts are cheap and you already paid the labor to get there.

I feel for this guy, I went through the exact same issue on my used 2014 6.7. Carfax looked great, but it wasn’t until the engine was out Ford needed the block casting numbers for the warranty we realized it was a used 2012 block. Carfax won’t show shadetree mechanics. Of course I went to a “friend” and shop owner who replaced with a new Ford long block. Honestly paid more for that than going through Dave. I stumbled on Dave’s KZbin after the fact or else being 30 miles North I would have taken my truck to him. Everything has a manufactured defect, in this case the extended oil changes suggested is that manufactured defect. They can’t keep making money if nothing breaks.

Dave, I love your videos and business philosophy. You have quality folks there, and it shows when their tools and tool boxes get shown. I'm a 45-year retired aircraft technician. My dad was an aircraft/helicopter mechanic all his life. If it rolled, flew, floated, or cut the grass he worked on it, that what I did all my life as well. So I do recognize little things like the tools and tool boxes. I disagree with one thing you said on this engine teardown. You said with 200k miles with the damage and metal shavings through the engine, you recommended overhaul. Now it may have been just the way I took it, but with metal contamination in the oil, it wouldn't matter if it had 10k miles or 200k miles, you only have one choice. I really enjoy y'alls videos and sharing your business with us. God bless y'all and keep everyone safe working on these things.

I was very lucky with my 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine when the hydraulic lifters mushroomed in it because 6 years ago I had that engine half torn apart at about 338,000 kilometres (about 210,000 miles) & I just replaced the hydraulic lifters as well as throwing in a new Rollmaster timing chain & sprocket set because I had the timing chain cover removed to replace a leaky timing chain cover gasket. 6 years later & at 402,000 kilometres (about 250,000 Miles) it's still going good,I didn't even have to replace the camshaft, I have a spare 0965 camshaft which I bought for $35 AUD cash in hand after someone got a camshaft upgrade done on their series 2 VT Commodore when it was just a valve rocker arm bearing failure which caused the noise in his !

Hahahaha!!! You tell 'em Dave @ 8:15 and beyond for a few!! A lot of people, even some mechanically smart people, just don't get how important it is to tear it completely down and start from fresh once you have had metal debris flying through the engine.!!! CRITICAL!!! I used to run into the same problem with people who didn't want to spend the money way back in the day on their two-stroke PWC. Same thing. They have a failure of some sort, burn it down, you can see the head and top of the piston has been bouncing pieces of the piston ring all over the place and they want you to just blow it out and put it back together. (you know what I'm saying) No way!! Also, at this point in the game, most of Dave's customers know the type of work they do. Yeah, you can get it done a lot cheaper at many different places, but you are not getting the quality and attention to detail that you're getting at Dave's with him, and just as importantly, the WHOLE CREW. If I was in his area and needed something done that I couldn't handle, I'd be willing to be part of his clientele because I know what I want and that's that. If anybody thinks that Dave is selling people things they don't need, pay the fee for the analysis and then take it somewhere else. Guaranteed it won't be as good. Rock on everybody at Dave's Auto in Centerville Utah. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅

The lifter most likely did not fail first. It most likely was the plastic tray that broke and allowed the lifter to spin. Lifter trays are a massive problem on the 6.7 powerstroke. Especially 11-14 trucks. Ford changed and updated the trays in the gen2 6.7. The bearing failures are normally neglect or 15w40.

I wonder if these lifters failed mainly because of neglected maintenance, too high oil viscosity, manufacturing quality issues or a combination of all three factors. Curious to know which contributed the most. These hydraulic lifters are obviously the weak point in the 6.7:s. But there are ways to adapt to the weaknesses of any tool. Some solutions are more foolproof than others, but everyone can learn to make what they have last as long as possible.

@@v12alpine One main reason they switched to rollers is catalytic converters came along and wouldn't tolerate the zinc and phosphorous in the oils that were needed to lubricate the flat tappets/cam lobes, this fact leading to mandated vastly reduced zinc/[phosphorous content in oils. This is why you need to run special high zinc/phosphorous oil or additive in classic cars still running FT cams to avoid cam failier.

Aircraft engines are maintained better that auto engines just because of the rules set forth by the FAA. @wickertwm
@wickertwm Ай бұрын
Watching your channel and I am starting to see that every engine has an issue. This lifter problem destroyed the entire engine, and it doesn't seem like it could be prevented with maintenance. What I get out of this, is that if I need a diesel (or a gas truck they both have lifters that can fail) then buy new, and get a warranty. Sell when the warranty expires. These engines seem like a ticking time bombs. Its not if they will fail but when. Aircraft engines like Lycombing and Continental also have lifters but because they are in an aircraft they can't be allowed to fail. Very few lifter failures in an aircraft engine. Why can't auto engines be more reliable?
@oceanmariner
@oceanmariner Ай бұрын
There's gotta be more to it. Like low oil pressure, intermittent oil supply, collapsing oil filter, maybe an oil gallery restriction. It's not common to have several lifters with excessive wear and it's not common to have multiple cam lobes with excessive wear. Along with main and rod bearings showing signs of trying to spin. Bearings spin because of contact. But with oil pressure rod and main journals never touch their bearing, instead riding on an oil film maintained by pressure. Maybe the maintenance wasn't good and when noise started, the engine got a couple quick oil changes making the sludge situation look better. Old Marine Diesel Rebuilder

On top of this failure diagnosis, was it the 200K plus miles on this particular motor that it's just wore out? or did the owner not use a quality engine oil, or was the oil not changed enough??

We've had 3 6.7s go down in the fleet ,it was determined that the driver had changed the oil and used 15 40w ,expensive lesson for shure

@@garyharrington5300 15w-40 should absolutely be fine for a 6.7 powerstroke unless you are regularly starting it like sub zero temps every single day.

Diesel engines are very hard on oil. Change it often. Even the finest metallurgy will fail without viable lubrication.

What happened to the quality? The pin on the duramax used to be a keyway and it's pressed on the powerstroke and they had dog bones for the roller lifters now they just expect em to stay put

So one worn lobe on a cam and we should replace engine or rebuild? My dealer just replaces cam and lifters. Asking for learning purposes

Where do you think the metal from the worn cam lobe goes? It’s now through out the engine everywhere oil goes!

It's the cost of getting to it, once you get to a certain mileage and if you don't catch it early enough by doing oil tests it's not worth it. If you're 30,000 mi and you somehow heard it and caught it early sure but 200,000 is too far, just rebuild it If you plan on keeping it

That is the worst rocker assembly I've ever seen in an engine...hey wait a minute after watching the video to the end the 6.7 uses two push rods per lifter to open both exhaust valves and intakes valves instead of a bridge to open both the intake and exhaust valves so that explains why the rocker assembly is so cluttered.....WTF Dave you need to open a shop here on the east coast to
