Medicine as a job is a context that doesn’t have balance built in, so if it’s going to be there at all, it has to come from you. Early in my career I would feel bad at the idea of saying no to the hospital when they called me to work more and so I said yes too much & it became toxic to my life. Once I perceived that balance wasn’t already there but that I had to create it and work on it, that changed and I learned that as long as I said no sometimes, I could say yes without burden, and as long as I said yes sometimes, I could say no without guilt. We’re way outnumbered and the need of the world is endless, so I agree, you need balance to continue to have something to offer and to be healthy, and it’s up to you to tend to that and create it day by day & choice by choice.

Hi Dr. Parker, I’m a first year medical student. I watch your videos regularly. Love them! Keep the great material coming. I’m trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I love surgery. I worked with a lot of surgeons before school. But, I also love my wife and son, so I’m looking into their areas like the ED (I was assuming I had to work 80 per week as a surgeon, which would be tough for a family). It’s helpful to know that I don’t necessarily have to work for a million hrs a week. Thanks!

I'm actually kind of excited for the upcoming grueling lifestyle, mostly because I'm just tired of 3rd year rotations where you have to be there but you can hardly do anything so you just sit around with no sense of purpose and waste a bunch of time. Guys THUMBS UP this comment as i know alot of you will benefit from this question. Dr Buck, one thing that intrigues me since I am a medical student is that how the surgeons recall and remeber alot of stuff! i do understand that this comes with time . But do surgeons like dedicate time every week or month to reading journals and read medical books to keep their knowledge fresh? DO you dedicate a specific amount of time to reading such stuff to keep that info? Very interested to know your opinion on it !

Being a surgeon is it's own LIFESTYLE. It's constant reading and talking and reviewing medical information. I don't dedicate a certain amount of time daily because my days are so up in the air. But i'm always getting emails with medical and surgical articles and reading those that pertain to me. After a while you remember the things that are significant. Also, remember the surgeons are telling you what they remember not what they don't remember lol

You had mentioned you like to read when you finally get some off time. What else makes up your leisure time? You've never talked about it, but do you have a partner in your life? If so, how do you balance that?

It depends on what specialty you choose, what “stream” you go into (academic, private practice etc.) and if you plan on doing fellowships. Some other things to take into consideration are rank and location (are you a resident vs attending? Do you work in a small town vs a major bustling city like Chicago or NYC?) For some surgeons there is very little time for our-of-hospital commitments whereas for some they lead 9-5 jobs or some also choose to be in between- working insane hours and then vacation for 2 weeks-1 month. Again, it’s all very variable or at least as to my experience.

I know, we have to work and learn a lot, show ambition and be willing to do the extras. I need to do premed classes but feel invincible going from the lowest depths academically to the heights. yes and no. you want to make sure you love it, cause it ends up being a lot of your life. but yes because you don't want to get stuck with no work. most surgery specialties are in demand. radiology, ER etc
