Here is how active listening works!
Hi, I am Michael Fridrich, your expert in communication for leadership and sales. Many people are of the opinion that they have mastered active listening. However, the reality often is different. People talk at cross purposes and often try to get their point of view over. Conversations begin to falter, conflicts are pre-programmed. Active listening is not a technique but a basic attitude, or, as Carl Rogers puts it: “Try to see the other´s world through his eyes.”
Here are 7 concrete tips of how to listen even more actively.
• Open your ears to receive. Maintain eye-contact, observe and concentrate on the person you are talking to.
• Show interest and ask questions.
• At all costs, let the person you are talking to speak out and avoid interruptions.
• Confirm what he said and put the central statements into your own words. E.g. “If I understand you right…”
• From time to time repeat important points or aspects. E.g. “In the beginning of our conversation you have said…”
• Show an interest in the emotional state of the other. E.g. “this has hit your feelings.” Or “At this point then you have really been happy?”
• Summarize for another time the decisive thoughts. E.g. “If I have understood you correctly, then essentially it is this XYZ that you are about.”
I wish you further improvements in your active listening skills!
