I served on the Nimitz, 1977-1981, electrician in the engine compartments, don’t remember any electric motor driving the propeller shafts. They are driven by turbines, which are driven by steam. The shafts are huge, and extend hundreds of feet, and they twist under the tremendous torque. I was on board when they filmed, “The Final Countdown”. We had to go to sea for a couple weeks just for the film. Anyway, no electric motors driving the shafts.
@IamFleisch5 ай бұрын
Man, pretty spot on description of pressurized water reactors. The 2 A4W (Aircraft Carrier, 4th Core Design, Westinghouse) reactors on board are rated at 550 MW each. They require a refueling, called a Reactor Compartment Overhaul (RCOH) just once in the 50 year operational lifetime of the ship. One thing I’d like to add to your excellent description of how they operate is that there are two distinct water loops; The primary and secondary loops. The primary is the high pressure, high temperature water that transfers heat from the reactor. The secondary is the low pressure side that boils into steam, does useful work, and is condensed back into water. The loops are isolated from each other physically, transferring heat through “U-tubes” in the steam generators while maintaining containment of contaminated water. Of the eight turbine generators you mentioned, four of those power the reactor coolant pumps and four are for ship’s load. There’s also something like eight diesel generators for emergencies, but don’t quote me on that. I was a reactor operator on CVN-75, USS Harry S. Truman from 2013-2016, a rewarding albeit stressful experience. Excellent job on the video!

On the Nimitz class the propellers are driven by the turbine and only on the ford class are there generators between the propellers and the turbines. Still great work over all👌
@richd36888 ай бұрын
Your description of the engineering spaces is mostly correct. Some errors. After the main engines reductions gears there are no electrical generators. In reality there are TWO power generators, completely independent of the main engines, driving by steam turbines like the main engines. Also, engineering spaces make up decks 4-9. The actually machinery and reactor spaces reside on decks 5-9). Deck four contains electrical load centers and other supporting equipment. Also the machinery spaces (main engines etc) and reactor spaces are separate spaces divide by a bulkhead.
@shom44585 ай бұрын
F-16 ARE in the navy, but NOT on carriers. They are training opposition air crafts flown by instructors so student pilots learn to fight other types of air crafts (particularly true at "Top Gun"). I just learned that from a Navy friend, so that could have been the reason for the error in this video.

Your Step 6 in the operation of the reactors is inaccurate. There is no electric motor on the shaft driven by the reduction gears. The core also doesn’t act as a “miniature sun” as that is a fusion reaction whereas a reactor is a fission reaction.

@cruisinguy60248 ай бұрын
You guys are normally pretty factual but damn, the F-16 mention is a pretty big oversight. It also sounds like you’re saying the Phalanx and CIWS are separate systems but they’re the exact same weapon system. Minor nitpicks: A key function of the Arleigh Burke class destroyers is anti submarine warfare but that wasn’t mentioned, implying they were primarily anti-air. The scale of the F/A-18 to the elevator to the carrier is off. As correctly stated the elevator can accommodate two fighters yet as displayed only one could fit.
