America's complex and oftentimes hypocritical relationship with imperialism is so fascinating to me. Like here, the US was one of the only nations determined to support China, not only for economic reasons, but also a regional counterbalance and peacekeeping state with the USSR and the Empire of Japan. The US also aggressively advocated for European withdrawal from Asia. At the Same time, America had control over the Philippines, a nation of 100 million. America was a minor colonial power to be sure, but a conflicted one stuck in a battle between its staunch anti-authoritarian national ideology, its sense of national destiny and its pursuit of power.

Before the United States colonised Hawaii in a coup d'état, there was a proposal from the Kingdom of Hawaii that the Japanese Imperial Family should marry into the Kingdom of Hawaii to form an alliance. At the time, Japan was not very forthcoming(they wanted but didnt do a action), worried about its relationship with the US... A great video would be how the Philippines became the last European-style colonialism by the US. The war to occupy the Philippines, which was brutal, sharply divided Americans that it probably dissuaded any future attempts to do the same elsewhere.
@thunderbird1921
@thunderbird1921 Жыл бұрын
Apart from Vietnam, I'd say the Philippines War polarized the American public more than any other foreign war we've ever had. The level of the attrocities was so horrific that even many in the press of that era were enraged (some feared America's image had been tarnished beyond recovery). Theodore Roosevelt came to power around the time these facts reached Washington, and realized the only way peace would be maintained over the Philippines would be to pardon virtually all who had resisted the US and court martial at least the worst of the generals involved. McKinley started this imperialism and had done little to nothing in terms of stopping these horrors, which honestly make some of the Vietnam attrocities look mild (groups of soldiers were killing women and children in revenge on at least 1-2 occasions on order of their officers). A disgusting man. I was sick to my stomach when I first learned of this conflict, it's hands down one of the Top 5 lowest moments in our country's history.
@TheKnowledgeMan101
@TheKnowledgeMan101 2 жыл бұрын
Although this video just glosses this over. When the Philippines were sold to the US by Spain after the Spanish-American war, the Filipinos were not happy having another colonizer rule them, so they fought against them. And for 3 years, America fought a war in the Philippines, of which they committed brutal atrocities such as putting Filipinos into concentration camps, massacres like in Samar when the US commander ordered his men to kill everyone over the age of 10, torturing people using the so called "Water cure" along with burning down villages and killing defenseless civilians in the process, and in the end, more than 200,000-1,000,000 Filipinos have lost their lives to warfare, disease, malnutrition and atrocities. And when these atrocities were brought to the US government and the public,they were appalled and shocked, and after the war, America no longer had the stomach to have more colonies and ended the Manifest Destiny claim to take more land. And after the war, America invested alot of money and resources into rebuilding the Philippines and organising the government to give Filipinos more autonomy and self governance as soon as possible, and granting the Filipinos even more rights than before with the US extending the Bill of Rights to Filipinos, along with improving education and healthcare, introduced social programs and trained the Philippine army, because the US felt so guilty for having the Philippines as a colony and massacring their people that they wanted to make sure that the Philippines would have great accomodations under their rule, and worked hard with Filipino politicians to grant the Philippines independence as soon as possible, the US was very determined to give the Philippines independence, that it reformed and built up the government more than America's other colonies like Puerto Rico and Guam. That our Commonwealth government was established much earlier than the rest of the colonies and were granted independence before Hawaii could even be a state

The Manifest Destiny was just a dull-witted colonial expedition that ruined the indigenous world. I don't care how many times the United State's presidency sugar coats their words by means of 'helping' countless indigenous nations. They're a race hated by an eternal nation, and they're still pooping influence in the Philippines, especially through politics and government. The United States is a death country that only injects lies into their colonial possessions in order to seem harmless. Bloody yankees.

This is fucking insane. the US and UK are directly responsible for WW2. With the treaty of racial equality being turned down and US and UK clearly colonising more and more, edging for racial world domination, Germany and Japan had NO CHOICE but to rise up and take it first. This channel is literally my favorite educational and historical program on KZbin! Since discovering you about 2 years ago, I'm watching episodes that cover ancient and medieval history (my favorite periods of time), from nuanced and varied points of view interwoven with intricate details that I've never read about or seen before. Watching this episode about the events in the 40-50 years leading up to the outbreak of WWII, I see how the conflict in the Pacific had many factors and situations that could have been prevented, changed, or avoided. It's interesting to see that WWII was not necessarily a "good guy vs bad guy" war, as it's many participants performed terrible acts leading up to and during the war. U.S. racial hostility towards the Japanese leading up to the mass imprisonment of Japanese-Americans during the war is an example of America's tarnished history. History is never just black and white. Keep up the amazing work! 👏

This channel used to be rather niche, now I see an influx of new viewers outside the usual audience, especially in the comment section. I'm not saying it's bad rather it's rather great that a lot more people are taking interest in history.

In what world was manifest destiny "not by force of arms in most cases?"

It was for sure, and the military was not too infrequently called upon to subjugate the natives when they resisted the westward expansion of the settlers. I suppose the channel was referring to the fact that a lot of the expansion was done by civilian frontiersmen, instead of a standing military? Even if so characterizing as it not being by the force of arms would be questionable, as those civilians were also not infrequently interacting with the natives violently. Wars or acts of murder are no less violent when carried out by irregulars.

Refers to the legal acquisition of territories by treaty and purchase -- Florida, Louisiana, Gadsden, Alaska -- as recognized by other nation-states. The Mexican Cession was via treaty that settled the Mexican-American War, and thus was the result of the force of arms.

Yes. This was fairly well done. The problem here would be the importance placed on the Non-Fortification Clause. The PI was pretty much doomed because of Pearl Harbor. Then - as with the British in Malaya and the Dutch in Indonesia the defense of the PI was mismanaged. In the PI they had 8 hours of warning and yet - still managed to have most of their planes caught on the ground. Then MacArthur tried to contain the Japanese Landings north of Manila - and was sending all his supplies up there - which were (I believe) lost when the PI Army collapsed. Thus - when they tried to fall back on fortress Bataan - there was no food there. MacArthur really should have been Court Martialled like Kimmel and Short and for the same reasons. I mean at least Kimmel and Short were surprised(!). So - what you had in the Western Pacific amongst the Allies was being in Japan's back yard, military forces that were, over all, too weak, with what there was oriented towards Germany and mismanagement of the forces they did have - that resulted in the massive Western Defeats they suffered. More fortifications might have helped but ... not enough to make a real difference. After Pearl Harbor any chance at all of Plan Orange being executed was gone. The massive naval building program started before the war - was what turned things around for us - but that would have needed to be done much, much sooner. .

@@abbasibrahim9435 Honestly, apart from likely France, America is territory-wise and influence-wise the biggest empire governed by a republic the world has seen since Rome. People forget how much of the Roman Empire came together when it was still the Roman Republic.

@@attiepollard7847 But why follow the example of European powers? I thought the United States was founded to not be like European powers and instead value freedom, liberty and democracy over imperialism and colonialism. Do you folks ever follow your Declaration of Independence? Does that statue that stands in New York bay mean anything to you? What happened to "Consent of the governed" clause of American democracy?
@TheKnowledgeMan101

@@attiepollard7847 But the idea of choosing between American takeover of Native American land or letting European powers take it is a false dichotomy or false equivalence. You don't need to take over that land to protect the native Americans from European expansionism. All you needed to do, was make them military allies and give them all the weaponry and aid they need to repel any colonizer. Along with threatening these European powers as evident in the Monroe doctrine with war if they attack the tribes. And I'm sure Europeans can't afford a war with another country when they're fighting against each other

@@attiepollard7847 But if these resources that are being shared to native Americans used to protect the nation, why would anybody object to that? Its there to protect the nation. Yes, Native Americans are susceptible to corruption, but if you just get on the good side of native Americans and don't attack or interfere in their everyday lives, why would they have any interests in attacking the US? Make a peace treaty with them, give them aid, and ensure that they are not attacked by settlers, and they'll leave you alone. Plus, make even better deals with them than European powers.
