Please don't forget to mention the naval bombardment of Pearl Harbor as well, the Japanese had begun bombarding the entire town of Pearl Harbor that fateful morning due to a large naval vessel stationed out in the ocean. This is verified by men that were there on that day, civilians and servicemen shared the horrors of war together

Just binged the last few videos. Great work. Out of curiosity I checked different Wikipedia articles on the 2nd Sino-Japanese War on what they had to say about the conquest of Nanking. The results were interesting. German: At least 300k casualties English: 40,000 to 300,000 between 13 December 1937, and late January 1938 killed or wounded Japanese: No numbers, they kill it 事件 (Jiken, incident/event) and mention discussion and controversy and link to subpages for both the "event" and the "discussion", I haven't checked those yet. To be fair the page for the war is really bare-bones and is more a timetable than an article. Fascinating how different they are. I wonder what the Chinese one is like but I don't speak Chinese but they seem to talk of "the slaughtering of at least 200k until January 38".

16:50 Yamamoto knew very well the industrial capabilities of the US and opposed the war. Said himself that they have around 1 year (not yearS) after the attack at Pearl Harbor to invade SE Asia and Oceania before the American Navy could retaliate. He travelled to the USA before the war, graduated at Harvard, visited the Detroit and Chicago industrial areas and the Texas oil fields, and lastly was designated naval liaison in Washington for 3 years, so he knew what he was talking about.

@jim not talking about those quotes. I'm talking about the fact he knew Japan would have 1 year (not years as stated in the vid) after the attack before USN could mount any strategic offensive. I think he was the only one who understood the economic and industrial power US was. But I agree it was the begining of the end for the Japanese Empire.
@kaltaron1284
@kaltaron1284 2 жыл бұрын
@jim AFAIK that quote is apocryphical. And I don't think Yamamoto "decided" to attack the USA, he just planned a way to attack them that would buy Japan the most time. And for that it wasn't too bad. If they'd focused the oil reserves more and the CVs had been present, it would have been an even greater success. But once the USA emargo started, Japan was boned whatever they did.
@kaltaron1284
@kaltaron1284 2 жыл бұрын
I remember it as him saying that he could guarantee victory for half a year if they struck first and dealt a heavy blow. That was also an estimate of how long Japan could keep up most of the war effort and industry without oil imports. What baffles me a lot is that Japan (neither IJA nor IJN) really thought about supply lines. The IJA was often of the oppinion thaty soldiers could live off the land and worrying about supply lines would slow them down. Worked for the early campaigns quite well but in some of the jungles or islands... not so great. the IJN never had enough convoys or convoy protection so once the USN started uboat raiding... bye bye supplies from conquered territories.

It was so easy for everyone to watch and for you to narrate. I grew up hearing tales of these horrific tales of how my grandma's sister was raped by tens of invading Japanese soldiers, how my another sister of my grandma was kidnapped and taken to Burma without trace until this day. My dad was a toddler and the trasiting US soldiers would toss him butter tins and candies as he watched them bathing in the small local river. My dad and his brothers would run around wearing garrison caps aka wegde cap or service cap (given to them as gifts by the American soldiers). The reason why my dad and his 2 brothers were the only friends (in that small town) with the soldiers was because they all spoke English well just like my grandpa. So there you go, English IS INDEED the global or universal laguage haha The farmers and loggers from our village farm told me that there are heavy army artilerry and tanks rusting and rotting beyond the mountain range which surrounds our farmlands....the hardwares they say belong to China and Japan both..... At the time, Japan could invade Soviet's Siberia for oil, but they did not because of their earlier defeat By Zhukov in the Battles of Khalkhin Gol (also an episode in this channel). If they had invaded Siberia in any case, the world history would be quite different as the Soviet would fight two wars at the same time. The Soviet spy Richard Sorge stationed in Japan got the information that Japan would invade south instead of into Siberia, and transmitted it to Stalin. Stalin then relocated large Soviet force from fast east to the front line with Nazi Germany, which saved his country. A lot of coincidences in the ww2.
@thecoldhardtruth2986
@thecoldhardtruth2986 2 жыл бұрын
@@yassinhafez1337 Agreed, Khalkhin Gol would not matter at all if the Chinese didn't fight as hard as they did, and thus prolonging the war for far longer than the Japanese could ever anticipate, for they were well prepared for war, but not one of attrition. Imagine if the Chinese fell before Germany started their Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland, we'd all be speaking German, Italian, or Japanese today. Most people focus too much on the contributions of the USA, or the USSR, and not enough on what the Chinese did, I'd say they did the most by far. As mentioned constantly in this series of Pacific War videos, both the Japanese, and the rest of the world, underestimated the Chinese greatly. The Japanese lost the war because of it, and the Allied forces were saved because of it, or else they would have never had the required time to build up and prepare for the Pacific War as much as they did and most likely lose the Pacific to the initial surprise attacks by the IJN.

For the people who, for some reason, STILL don't know why Imperial Japan attacked the US while still fighting in China... *TL;DR* They had no oil. So they either had to surrender in China, or get oil by going to war with the US. They literally could not continue operations in China. Their only options were to either abandon the war entirely, or to take the Dutch East Indies for the oil they needed. An attack on the Dutch East Indies came with a large risk of the US getting involved. And if the US did get involved, they'd have been absolutely smashed, due to the IJA and IJN being spread thin. Especially with the Philippines allowing the US to rapidly deploy anywhere they wanted in the SEA theater. Taking on the US immediately was their best chance. Defeat in China wasn't an option. The US would have likely attacked them if they made a move on the DEI. They couldn't "wait and see" because if the US *did* counter-attack, they'd have gotten obliterated. Even if the US didn't immediately step in after invading the DEI (unlikely), they would have eventually gone to war regardless. And with a consolidated US Naval force based out of the heart of their territory, that would have been... Bad. Instead, they could get their oil, destroy the US Pacific Fleet, and delay the US long enough to win in China. Consolidate their position, fortify the hell out of the Pacific, hope for an eventual cease-fire. Obviously that didn't happen but hindsight is 20/20. It's still honestly the best move they could have made, I don't see any other potential strategy that's better.

@@Haijwsyz51846 The US was coordinating it's forces with the Dutch and working closely with their military. FDR was also eager to get involved in the Pacific, he'd been trying to get Congress to go to war for a while. One more invasion could have been the tipping point, like Poland in Europe. It wasn't a 100% sure-fire thing, but it was a very likely outcome. Attacking Pearl Harbor didn't get them oil. Taking the East Indies did. But attacking Pearl Harbor meant they could stop the US Fleet from coming in from behind and wrecking them in a counter-attack, once they invaded the East Indies. The general idea was "They're already getting ready to attack us, so we'll stop them first. Hopefully finish off China, and then consolidate before they can rebuild their fleet." edit: So no one gets the wrong idea, not saying "Japan was in the right" by *any* means. Just putting their frame of mind at the time into context. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense.

Another alternative Japan could have taken was an earlier Operation Ichi-Go. I had this idea when I first read how much destruction the IJA did to the Kuomintang even by 1944. Japan did have French Indochina by 1940 when they bullied the Vichy French into accepting occupation so a 1941 Ichi-Go doesn't seem like a terribly bad idea considering that it would have the same objectives, except having anything to do with Burma this time.

They could have ended the war in China. That would have been an embarrassing end to that imperialistic venture, but so what? Japan had no right to conquest in China and the war was from the very beginning an unjust one. Moreover, by expanding the war via the Strike South strategy Japan would ultimately suffer many more losses than it did in all the previous years of war in China, see it's cities reduced to rubble, and experience the even greater humiliation of unconditional surrender and foreign military occupation. Japan had plenty of choices and it chose very poorly. Pride goeth before a fall.

Never thought I would be interested in wwii history. This is great. In this part of the world, we are mostly taught the western-centric perspective and place the US very high on the pedestal. In my experience, grade-school and high-school students don't learn much about the events that led up to the attack on Pearl Harber or the involvement of the Asian nations. Learning more usually involves a deep dive in college or on your own time.

I want to share more details on why CCP didn’t assist KMT army in South ShanXi battle. 1. 1939 West ShanXi accident, the commander of KMT’s 2nd war area - Yan Xishan build up an anti-Janpan group with CCP together in 1936 (牺牲救国同盟会), and the group developed to a strong organization in 1939 with an army of 70 thousands soilders. The problem was that most leaders of the group were communist, and this army controlled by CCP. Yan thought this army should be governed by him because he was the top commander of this area and it’s him who proposed build this group, while CCP just don’t obey. Finally, their cooperation turned to military conflict. 2. 1941 South AnHui accident, KMT accused the CCP’s New Fourth Army didn’t fight with Japanese army instead of only developing themself. Then, New Fourth Army obeyed orders of KMT to move their troops on the North side of Yellow river and attack Japanese. However, they were surrounded and fired by KMT on the moving way, only 2,000 survived. 3. After Peng Dehuai’s 100 Regiments offensive, defense Minister He Yingqin suspended the supply of ammunition and pay to the Eighth Route Army in December 1940 on the grounds of it’s unauthorized expansion (KMT was shocked CCP developed so many troops). Thus, the willing of CCP to assist KMT was passive. Finally, Japanese destroyed KMT army in South ShanXi battle, KMT lost over 70 thousands, Japan only lost less than 3 thousands. Anyway, the united front was not really means they united. The civil war was just at a time-out.

Prior to WWII the US produced over 50% of the world's crude oil. Japan 🇯🇵 🏣 imported over 90% of it's oil 🛢 from the US 🇺🇸. They also bought millions of metric tons of scrap iron from the US 🇺🇸. From which they manufactured approximately half of the IJN Combined Fleet. (What in their then naval nomenclature meant their TO&E of Naval Fleet Units)
