i'm sadly from russia. cases like this perfectly demonstrate how police work here and how defenseless students are, compared to rich "big shots". I study at a film university and the only time professor was actually fired for harassment was ... because the harasser and the victim were of the same gender ... yes ..... it's that bad. although before that there WERE cases of harassment of young women by men, all of it was hushed up and victims were shamed and\or called "problematic". and if someone ever try to sue their harasser, he takes his "honored artist\director\actor\engineer of ussr" title, money, "connections" and as a result victim gets tons of victim blaming or exclusion from uni and so on. thank you for covering cases from russia, because here any blogger who speaks out negatively about the situation can easily get arrested and\or go to jail

my supervisor for my dissertation who was my professor throughout my degree helped me a lot to get through the final year because of how badly I dealt with the pressure and the strain of finishing everything in 2021 that was still impacted by the virus. i still talk to him sometimes on LinkedIn and I do want to eventually meet him again for a talk about our everyday lives and when i think about his help, it bring me to tears of happiness because of his kindness and when i thank him for it, he would always say it's my pleasure and it was my own hard work. so seeing professor like Oleg is such a shame because not only does he instill the fear for future students meeting monsters like him but creates a massive negative shadow for other male professors. nevertheless, he is a demon for putting such an innocent young woman through hell and ending her life. rip to anastasia.

so life sentences are usually for: - murder of 2+ people (aggravated murder) - murder with “severe cruelty” (id argue this case qualifies but he was a rich man. money has *a lot* of power in russia) - sexual assault of a minor if the perpetrator already had a conviction of SA of a minor - sexual intercourse with a minor under age 16 if the perpetrator already had a conviction of a sexual crime against a minor - terrorism with nuclear/radioactive materials - hostage taking that resulted in an intended death - organizing a criminal organization (this is for the person at the top of the hierarchy like a mob boss) - production/selling of illegal drugs, usually if it’s in high amount - trafficking illegal drugs, usually if it’s in high amount - “infringement on life” on a government official to stop their political activity or for the purpose of revenge - sabotage resulting in intended death - infringement on life of a person who executed justice/law enforcement official - and genocide so yeah, really varied. it’s wild that drugs charges can result in a life sentence but not this heinous crime

Not only she was killed and dismembered after it happened so many people in the russian Internet blamed the victim, it made me sick. Every time a man abuses or even kills a woman, there are plenty of people who start saying "she had it coming" "its her own fault" " what she was thinking about", "she drove him to it" and so on so forth, every Russian woman heard those words in her life. Family abuse is a great problem in Russia. For women (they are constantly blamed for men's behaviour) and for men as well (men are not tought how to cope with stress and instead of seeking help choose alcohol and violence).

Hi, thanks for this video. I just want to add some facts from France (where he was often invited), and from the reenactment side : he was well known for beating horses and chasing very young reenactors women (not seducing, chasing). When all of this happened then a lot of people talked : his misbehaviours were WELL know by almost all his napoleon reenactors friends, but "you know he had great costumes ! We could not ban him !". The whole reenactment sphere is guilty : if one day someone said "stop" then this young woman might still be alive.

You have no idea how much - till this day! - how often people joke about St. Petersburg as about "the city of dismemberments". 🤔 Ironically, this is not the only scandalous case that happened at that very same period of time that was involving someone dismembering a victim. Also - twelve years is I would say a "normal" sentence for a murder in Russia. We don't have 40 years like USA. Basically, the bigger sentence after ±20 years is life in prison. There are rarely any exclusions.

@@lilg2300 I wish I didn't mention it, but I kinda have to. First, Navalny had a warrant on his arrest hanging on him for *ages*, yet he was able to leave and come back the country for years. Second, and that's the main thing - he was arrested NOT for "expressing his opinion", but for fraudulent activity. Shortly, he is a corrupted man himself. And mind that - I'm saying this as someone, who was once supporting Navalny. Now I don't.

@@SeaCat2401That's because your government has successfully made you believe alot of bullshit about Navalny. Even if the man was guilty of corruption or other minor crimes he didn't deserve to be poisoned by the government, or thrown in a medieval looking prison cell for 29 years. Hopefully after Putin takes his last breath Russians will finally take back their country.

"Fall for his charms?" That's just gross 😝. This old man clearly has mental health issues, but because the university ignored this predatory behavior, his abusive behavior went unchecked! Good grief, this story is such an old tale...Bring these creeps to justice 🤨

Damn never expected you to cover this case. I remember it made so much noise back then, since nobody could've suspected a brutal murder being tied to one of the most prestigious universities in Russia. Despite this, there's not a lot of coverage on Russian side of KZbin for some reason huh

Some time ago I've asked for this case in the comments. I am not sure how you came upon that story, but I am extremely happy you did. Your storytelling skills are superb, you've included details that only real true crime fans know and you've made an attempt to pronounce the names like russians do. Thank you, I enjoyed thid episode very much.

That's not a prison, that's a Daycare facility!!! This case makes me sick. I don't understand how they can put him in a Daycare facility for 12 years, man I was a drug addict, and did 4 years in a real Prison! This guy IS getting away with murder, and not really doing any time for it. I'm absolutely disgusted.

Corruption at its best. Don't be fooled. He likely feels no remorse. It's just an act. He saw Anastasia as an object, an extension of him rather than another human with a will of her own, intelligence, and dreams. This is what most women experience in life, albeit maybe not to that extreme. I'm grateful for the men and women with empathy and morals out there. The world can be ugly, but it would be far worse off without beautiful souls out there to counter and fight evil. Stay safe everyone ~

As a native speaker, I can tell you that he didn't even try to act any significant remorse in a proper way. On the published record from the court one can hear straight away from his intonations and word choice, that pronouncing this text in the court for him was just a lame play and a formality to perform in order to decrease his potential sentence. The only person he seemed to be sorry about was himself. And the words, his family, closed friends and lawyers were telling about Anastasia were absolutely infuriating. They portrayed her to be a monster and Oleg to be almost the hero for saving the world from this "terrible woman". It was all so full of rage and misogyny, that I felt sick to my stomach after almost every of their interview to the press

Makes no sense some people get longer prison sentences for drug possesion than some get for taking a life. Proof our justice systems are broken at best. best wishes & sympathies to her loved ones.

This girl was an absolute Beauty. She seemed to have an ethereal quality about her. She was not only beautiful, but very intelligent as well. What a shame that her life was cut so short buy an overbearing ogre that had an immense ego. May she rest in peace.

@rachellamont3594 again. Common sense. She distanced herself from her mum because she chose an old man with power. That's shouldn't be death sentence offense. It's unfortunate. She was beautiful and smart. She won't have struggled to find a decent human being with less power of influence
