Hey guys, This is the classic definition of a short corner as I understand it from Rob Wilson Pete windsor describes a totally different way of making a corner shorter, By Driving a tight line instead. I compare and break these 2 ideas down in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJjafZmAZ8acqck For the record, Most drivers try to implement short corners in long corners. But Lewis is by far the tightest-line driver, and Max is by far the widest line driver. That is, Max will be as wide as possible on entry and make the corner longer that way, but can carry more speed in. And Lewis will be a lot tighter on entry and dive into the apex a lot earlier with his tight line style.

Thanks. I see how the turning distance is shorter. I do think that Peter is talking about an early apex since he says the overall race distance of a shorter corner driver is less than the longer corner driver.

Hey! Yeah this is all true - but if you go in early you compromise your exit, don't you? So im not sure if this is actually fast, or what anyone does. I don't do early apex, because I value my exit speed!

I remember I was doing this short corner thing in hungary turn 2. I was always breaking slightly later but harder breaking, then steering aggressively to the left and then accelerating. I remember my exits were just way better through that corner compared to everyone I played against online. That was just that one corner I could clearly shorten instinctively.

@@LowerLaptime Although Peter Windor says, Max breaks early and he is the quintessential short corner driver according to Windsor. So I'm actually kinda confused.

@@akshaytakkar6747 peter refers to short corners being tight lines. Hes a bit confusing yes. So for example spain t4 do you just turn into the corner, or go left a bit to open the angle fully and then sweep in. Max does the latter, he uses all the track and drives longer lines. Lewis is more short corners in Peter's definition but hes a bit confusing sometimes

I took it to mean that drivers like Max turn slightly during the entry phase, still on full throttle or with a small brake, and then apply more brake pressure as he approaches the standard apex pivot point, at which point he turns sharply and hits the normal apex. Ultimately meaning he has "shortened" the corner due to the initial early turn in, bringing him away from the edge of the track, closer to the corner, but then still has the angle to pivot the car and get a fast exit. So similar to what you said, apart from the green line would be more straight on the way in with a small turn on the way in, and the pivot point would be in line with the red line instead of beyond it... I could be wrong though, that was just my interpretation of what Peter Windsor says.

I know what you're saying. Thats a little bit called "driving tighter lines" and it you get poor exits doing this. Also sometimes a tighter line can actually lead to a long corner, when you think you're driving a short corner! A "short corner" means you didn't do much "cornering" where as in a tighter line you might actually be cornering a fair bit even though you think you're driving a short line? Does it make sense? Sorry for long reply! Let me know!

@LowerLaptime will do to the maximum of my abilities. Last year, the most notable things I saw were the traffic at the end of Q1 and some different lines drivers take when overtaking (especially in F2 and F3, Theo Pourchaire comes to mind)

I assume you are right, but it contradicts what Peter Windsor says about Max being an early breaker and short cornerer. So how does that work? I don't really understand.

There are different styles of breaking, i think Max doesn't get to 100% breakpressure immidiatly to make the car stable and carry the breaks much deeper into the turn.

There are so many other corners where you can't do a short corner - for example all of Melbourne. So again possible that Max drives short corners where applicable and brakes early where applicable too. Not sure as I don't have the data! Cheers Martin

You are right. This is totally the opposite of what Peter Windsor explained. According to Peter a “short conner driver” brakes early and smoother so he can actually turn earlier and smoother, not loading the tires at once but rather gradually, and actually always transitioning before the geometric apex. So generally he always hits an earlier Apex. It’s about traveling less distance in the Conner not spending more ore less time. If that is the correct definition of short Conner I don’t know, but that what he said.

@@Ivanoskyao Hey! Yeah im not sure if its about "total distance" rather "distance actually cornering" so have a look at the red line in the video - its got a longer cornering distance. The green line only has that smaller sharper stronger cornering region. Let me know your thoughts or if that makes sense?👊 I might add again - ive never seen maxs data and pete never shows it. How do we know max is an earlier braker if we can't verify? We have no idea. I dont think what you say RE early apex is a fast approach. You ruin your exits.

Please since you don't often see the apex, how do you know when to turn the car?

Good question, applicable to long corners. Obviously the first time you go around, its a guess. But thereafter you just know how long the corner is. I use EVERYTHING. So, if the braking is at a certain point, and the steering starts after some time, and the gears come down to the right gear, then you just feel the time is right. So in short, practice and timing! Does that help?

Both. Using this technique means less time spent in the corner and more time in a straighter line which is faster. You'll also get a better exit onto the straights so you carry more speed all the way down the following straight. It's also better for tyre wear so over a race distance you'll have more grip.

I think gavin summed it up fairly well id just add that you can do this 'more" or "less" exaggerated. So depending on your appetite really. Its a very good question. Id still aim to at least take a late apex. I hope it helps? Cheers
