There were a lot of dominos that fell in place leading up to the Toronto Raptors championship in 2019, but it all started with James Dolan's distrust of Masai Ujiri, and Ujiri's masterful Andrea Bargnani trade.

Fun story about the Bargnani trade. I went to Olympia Sports Camp in Ontario, Canada (specifically the basketball camp). The camp is really well known in Canadian basketball and a lot of future Canadian NBA players actually went there as kids (I am definitely not one of those, I love basketball but rec league is more my speed now in my early 20's). They would always bring in guest coaches who were usually either current NBA players, coaches, former players, etc. One of those dudes they brought in was Walker D. Russell, a former NBA player who had a rather short career but at the time I was there he was actually a scout with the Knicks. I remember the Bargnani trade had just happened the other day and he started saying something along the lines of, "Bargnani has a lot of untapped potential and I think y'all weren't utilizing him enough in Toronto, and he will turn his game up a lot in New York." I wasn't back the next summer and sure enough, Walker was back again to coach during my week there. After putting us through some drills, scrimmages and of course a bunch of suicides, we entered a Q and A section. After a bunch of questions about his time in the league and advice for young players, someone asked what he thought of the Bargnani trade a year later. My man straight up said, "Listen, I was wrong." he continued on to say that it was going to be a longer process obviously since he is a scout with the team and all but I just though it was funny to hear that stark contrast in opinion.

Masai is a GM genius: - Traded Bargnani for a first round pick - Traded Gay for all those pieces who became good role players - Traded Vasquez for Powell and OG - Drafted Siakam 28th overall in the draft - Signed FVV after he went undrafted - Traded T Ross for Serge Ibaka - Traded Derozan and Poetl (the pick from the Barg trade) for Kawhi and Danny Green - Traded JV and scraps for Marc Gasol This is how a truly great GM builds a winner. No tanking, no superstar FA signings, just one GM swindling other GMs while also making smart signings

Yeah, the first round pick acquired from the Knicks became Jakob Poeltl that was a part of the Kawhi trade. But that trade doesn't happen without Zaza Pachulia placing his foot under Kawhi's shot in the playoffs vs Golden State which started Kawhi and his distrust with SA in regards to dealing with his injuries and prompting them to trade Kawhi.
