While he was pinned against that wall... uhg I hate to imagine the panic and terror he must of felt while he began to asphyxiate. I wonder if he had a moment to think, "seriously? this is how I'm gonna die?!"

Zing Zang first of all he was being suffocated and was probably in pain. It’s likely he couldn’t even speak. Furthermore, his death was almost instant. He died within minutes of being pinned. Not much time to do anything except think “omg how do I get out of this”. He probably spent last few minutes trying to get unstuck.

Never saw it. However, I've loved him for many of his other roles, such as his awesome turn as Charley Brewster in the underrated- as- hell 'Fright Night' remake (Charley made for a much better, smarter, and more developed hero in it than he was in the original film, largely due to Anton's performance), his flawless performance as the titular hero in the 'Odd Thomas' movie (As a fan of the book series, he made Odd exactly like how I imagine him in the books; As I continue to read the series, I still imagine hearing Odd's narration done in Anton's voice), and of course his brilliant work as Chekov in the 'Star Trek' trilogy.

wow..that shifting gear is creapy. This jumping back to the middle is what really scares me. You have to look at the display to see if it keep the position you've chosen. I do hope that the people who have started a lawsuit against the manufacturers of this type of gear, will win.
@tygervoods8358
@tygervoods8358 4 жыл бұрын
It has visual and audio cues that tell you that the car is not in park, how hard is it to not check your gear or take a look at the display before you leave the car? Still, the design is probably the worst in the industry and sad that a death was needed to change the design in newer models. Doesn't justify it either.
@atlasz911

This is never a problem if you use a car with Manual shifting gears and a simple handbrake. Too bad that Anton's death is the perfect example that automated shifting and luxury cars makes the driver totally lazy. What was the first reason that Anton left his car with the keys still in the ignition? Pure lazyness. Driving isn't driving anymore these days. The cars do everything for you and that's when these kind of unnecessary accidents happen.

I always look but I'm made that way....Sometimes the perfect design already exists, stop keep changing stuff just for the sake of it...having a driveway built on a hill doesn't help, but alot of homes are like this, those driveways should come with a health warning... There's so much unexpected shit out there trying to get you....You wouldn't think stopping your car on your own drive to get your mail, could get you killed. RIP Anton

I've told all my co-works to be careful when working on these hunk of junks because it's gone damage something or kill someone. Anton's death is so sad, he is one of my favorite actors and it pisses me off even more knowing that Chrysler thought this was a good idea. Transmissions should be manual or mechanical. I own a 2015 and absolutely love my GC. That being said, I can say that it's very easy to miss Park/Neutral. Just like your video says, this shifter lacks intuition and tactile feedback. It is truly one of the most ridiculous design flaws I've ever seen. It obviously didn't prevent me from purchasing, but IMO, it's very dangerous, and the proof is in this horrible tragedy. I have always taken extra care to make sure I"m in the right gear, given the shifter's fickle design from the start. So in short, phenomenal car is my experience, but horribly designed and dangerous shifter that needed the overhaul the 2016's received...one year too late for me.

Thank you for sharing, Michael. As an owner do you think that a software upgrade to put the vehicle in park when it's not moving (or moving extremely slowly) would help prevent roll away incidents?
@sechal
@sechal 8 жыл бұрын
I think so. By the sounds of your report it sound like it worked for Audi, so I'm hoping that their fix will be a permanent solution. No matter how diligent people should be, you are correct in saying that people do things sub consciously, without thinking, and shifting into park is simply one of those things. You throw your shifter up and way from you and just naturally think you're going to be in the right gear...not so with this shifter unfortunately. I'll try to update later if I have new information- my GC is going in for a oil/filter, standard service on Friday.

I hate the nontactile, non positional landing concept thoroughly. But if you must have it, how about, on the first try to unlock the doors, the locks bounce back into "locked" (like how my car pops back to unlocked when I try to lock the driver door with the door open and the car running). The car "fighting you" would be useful feedback. But far more than that, voice technology has been here for decades. Why in the HELL wouldn't it say "THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK. THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK. THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK (etc.)" when you open the door then??? It certainly wouldn't be a cost issue to always put that on a vehicle of that price.

Yet, Abrams wants to kill Label Chekov (ridiculous when his chr. lives to be Adm.one day) and the fellow in "Star Trek Continues" could play the part. This was a chr.that mattered to many of us fans from the time he started in season 2 of "TOS". Two actresses played Lt. Saavik-and almost a 3rd-and no one had to die to introduce her. If the car was on a hill and he didn't set it to the P mode and set it on the N mode instead, how did he get caught behind the car? Due to weight -and/or less steep inclination on top- it might not necessarily start rolling right away. I think it started rolling very slowly at first, and when it gained momentum after reaching the steeper inclination and went faster. By that time Anton was behind it and the ~2.5 ton beast dragged him and crashed him.

I've worked on vehicles for thirty years and only in the last five years have I encountered these new style shifters. If you go back to the introduction of the shift lock and the accidents that happen before that you will realize that manufacturers are just not very smart. They test these new ideas with control groups not the general public and do even get me started on the overall design, it's like they think these things will never break so why would you need to take something apart. I say send the design teams out to the assembly floor or to repair shops. And yes the designers need to learn cause the suits that approve this crap just look at it say yea sure that works, they don't know any difference!

Anton Yelchin has a couple of decent movies on Netflix. I stumbled into "Burying the Ex" because I was looking for other movies with Alexandra Daddario after watching San Andreas. It's a horror comedy. Then there's "Odd Thomas". It's pretty much about a guy that sees ghosts. His accident makes me angry. It could have easily been prevented with some common sense when they designed the vehicle. I stop and get my mail at the end of the driveway every day. I get out with the car running and hear the warning chime so it would have meant nothing to me if there was a warning that the vehicle wasn't in gear. From what I read, it was a slow, painful death too.

It should have been made so the car could have automatically went back to park when the door opened. I tow cars for a living and alot of cars automatically go to park when the driver side door opens. For example Acura has a thing called Car Wash Mode to keep the car in neutral but it has to be turned on by the person in the car, if not the car will go back into park when the door opens. When I tow cars that do this I put the drivers side window down and reach in and put my hand on the brake and with my other hand I shift it to neutral. Its a pain but it is a safety feature.

FCA is one of the worst companies in my opinion. They occasionally make good vehicles, but they have far too many flaws. Like seriously, they have some good technology in their vehicles, but their infotainment system is also prone to hacking. They try to do so much for a vehicle, and they don't perfect anything in them. The only brand I stick to is the off-road jeeps. Those actually have history to support them and are well made. Not this grand Cherokee shit

How is it that he had time to get out of the vehicle, walk down the driveway to a location between the rear of the vehicle and the fence before it rolled backwards into him? It seems that if the vehicle was in neutral on an incline it would have started rolling as soon as his foot came off the brake, or at the very least when he stepped out of the vehicle. Something fishy about this story

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but... The Toyota Prius has a very similar gear selection system, where the shifter springs back to a certain position. They ingeniously solved the "problem" by making park a button. You can't ever shift into park, you have to press a button. This removes doubt on whether or not you placed the car in park. Pretty smart if you ask me!
@4wheelonline
@4wheelonline 7 жыл бұрын
You bring up a good point. The Prius shifter is also in the dashboard, not in the standard location, right? Being in a totally different position and the park button you mention is probably more than enough to prevent an issue like this.

Very sad. Awful way to go. Dumb People are saying "why did he put it in neutral?" He thought he put it in PARK, not neutral!! The design of the shifter made it seem like it was in Park, correct? That's what I got from the video. And the bell Sound when he opened his door, probably meant to him, that the door was open, not that the car was in neutral. We have a new Kia and when you open the door with the engine running, the bell sound goes off too. Bad design by Jeep, Not enough warning to customers who already had the car, not good enough familiarization by the owner when first purchasing the car. Overall, a very tragic mistake and oversight by Anton. Not entirely his fault, but at the same time, he should have made sure the vehicle was in PARK before exiting the vehicle. Hopefully this serves as a lesson to All People to be alert, careful, & patient when parking and getting in and out of ANY car. Rip Anton. Anton was probably doing something that would of been done quickly so pretty much no need to throw the eb on especially since it's not a manual and all he had to do was put it in park and he would be good. Point is FCA made a garbage shifter and EB is a non factor here maybe if Anton knew his vehicle had a design flaw with the shifter then maybe he would of put it on even if he was only getting out to do something really quick where he would need to leave his vehicle running. Being in park on most automatics means your vehicle is pretty much staying put regardless of EB.

If he was parked on any kind of incline, especially a "steep" one, the Jeep would have started rolling back, as soon as he took his foot off the brake. He would barely had time to run and jump behind it, to get pinned, like that. The Jeep would have been already rolling backwards, which would have been obvious, when he went to get out..This just doesn't make sense. If it was an accident, he would have never had time to get behind the Jeep, before it hit the gate. Explain why the jeep decided to wait until he was between it and the gate, before it decided to allow gravity to do its thing. Go drive up, even a small incline, put your car in neutral, and see how impossible it would be, for that to accidentally happen. See how much time you have to take your foot off the brake, get out, and see how much time you have..and Jeeps are heavy, so it would move faster and with more force, than a normal sized car. I feel like I just watched someone telling me the earth is flat..lol

I've never been in one either. It Doesn't mean they don't exist but I would assume that's because they either don't conform to uk safety regulations or they are so uncommon here literally no one has one. I've also lived in Canada, Australia and travelled the USA and never come across them either. In my humble opinion a Manual hand break is better and more secure as even if you are in drive the car won't go anywhere.

While this shifter is one of the most stupid designs I´ve ever seen ( not only from the usability, but from the looks and feels), I still cannot imagine getting out of the car and walking all the way around it without noticing it rolling. I also missed the P on a normal old "analog" column shift lever on an incline and was about to leave the car with the engine off and the transmission in R ( key in ignition). It was a very slight incline, not the steep driveway pictured here. The moment I left off the brake pedal I felt the vehicle moving. How can you even have the time to walk all the way to the back of the rolling car? The vehicle would be already rolling while you walk at the side of it.

Your experience is not applicable here. Didn't you hear? His was in neutral, not reverse. It could have be still, or unperceivably slowly starting to roll as he jumped out. And if I was a busy high flying guy like that, I would not be walking. Jump out, run down to the gate, and as you jump out into the darkness you don't even sense the initial slow movement while in neutral. Perhaps you also didn't know that it was midnight. Make more sense now?

A design strategy for an engineer is to provide multiple and redundant indications for a machine operator, especially critical safety or protection related features. The best choice would be a system that has tactile, aural, and visual cues. In this case the only cues provided to the operator were visual, which is often going to be missed because drivers primarily use the visual sense when driving so that cue will be in competition for the operator's attention. Aural cues are, by their nature, generally not primary indicators. When used it's a difficult balance to keep the warning from being distracting rather than informative. Also, it's difficult for some operators to distinguish between aural cautions and warnings. Especially when those warnings are unfamiliar. The best cue for an operator in this situation is tactile feedback because that sense isn't competing with the visual sense because proprioception (the sense pertaining to awareness of the relative position of one's own body and the strength of effort being employed in movement) occurs at the base level of awareness and will usually become noticed when expected sense differs from actual experience. (i.e. turn the steering wheel to the right but the vehicle doesn't respond and you'll become far more deliberately aware of the position of your hands than you would be if you had perceived the expected response) This is one of the biggest problems that Boeing rated pilots have when transitioning to Airbus. Their controls do not provide the tactile responses that Boeing has developed over many years of trial and error. Airbus engineered that out because the operator is usually the computer with most manual control being a backup to the automated systems. It's also worth noting that transport pilots are found in pairs with each double checking the work of the other. No auto pilots or co pilots for drivers of automobiles so that makes the redundant cues for important safety features more important. A long post to say this: You're right that this was an obviously terrible design, and innovation for the sake of change alone isn't necessarily a good thing.

As a driver it's your responsibility to check to make sure your car isn't rolling before you step out of the vehicle, especially when you're on a hill. Even with traditional shifter or parking brake, there could still be the possibility of mechanical malfunction. It takes an extra 2 seconds to let off the brake pedal and confirm your car is stable before stepping out of the vehicle.
@boynblue27
@boynblue27 8 жыл бұрын
Why do auto designers have to update the ergonomics of the shifter anyways? More and more your car is dependent on computer controls and software meaning when shit breaks it is way more expensive to fix. How about leave things that are suppose to be mechanical alone Or if you have to incorporate such devices have a sensor detect that a car is rolling backwards and automatically engage brakes or something. Peace to you brother Anton you will be missed.

This is the first time I see this type of shifter that only has visual feedback to indicate which gear you are on. Drivers would have to retrain themselves on how to use a shifter and it's unlikely they would. Definitely poor design.

Technology kills...symbolically & literally> which is the apparent case of what happened to Anton...hate to say this but sometimes less is more...the simple transmission shifter is conventional but it works well enuff to not change it...thus, it's sometimes best not to go digital with certain things...a transmission shifter made digital sounds like a sci-fi disaster in & of itself....so obvious how tragic this kid's death is but how could I post & not mention how terribly tragic this is...& the circumstances are like so surreal...like I said, technology is a monster that has reared its ugly head in such a way now that calamities like this one although unbelievable, unconscionable & freakishly horrific, it's not that surprising when taking into accountability the unscrupulous direction of the digital age

My wife owns a 2014 GC. It has the same shifter. Since I don't drive her car very often (I drive my Rubicon or my Dodge PU) I always have to look at the dash to ensure it is in park. When shifting gears in this vehicle it is very easy to miss the correct gear. Although she is used to it, she always puts the emergency brake on and double checks to ensure the transmission is in Park. It also has the remote starter; she has gotten out of the car and walked away with the engine still running -the motor is extremely quiet. Another item to be careful for when using the newer vehicles. Personally, I wish all the manufacturers would get together and develop a single standard layout for the operating parts such as location of windshield wipers, lights, horn, washer, etc. I used to travel a lot which meant I was renting a car all the time. It always takes time to figure out where the different switches are located. In an emergency, it could cause a serious problem.

In 97 I fell asleep at the wheel in a Datsun B-2 10 and rolled that son of bitch 16 times if it rolled once at 60+ mph. Broke my neck C-2 fracture, same as Christopher Reeves. Hopped out of the car walked three miles and waited two days to go to the hospital. Yelchin is fucking smashed to death while checking his mail by his own vehicle because what? Regardless of the unconventional shifter, Anton is 100% to blame for his own death for: parking on a hill with the car running, disregarding two indicators and an audible alarm which would have let him know he wasn't in park and, most importantly, not setting the parking brake. You have to be responsible for your own well-being.
