@@sagnaik Did you not watch the video? Within the first minute and a half he explains that the Quest 2 just looks like a low quality display so movies don’t look great. As someone who bought and has been using a Quest Pro for the past two months, I can agree with that. I tried watching a few movies and Netflix on it, but it was just not that great looking. My MacBook Pro looks significantly better, as does my OLED TV. On the other hand, the Vision Pro has dual 4K micro OLED displays that are HDR capable and can hit up to 5000 nits of brightness. They will quite literally look like the best displays in the world until microLED (different from micro OLED) becomes cheaper to manufacture. Contrast that with the Quest 2/Pro which still use LCD displays that have significantly lower brightness, cannot do perfect blacks (Pro can kind of, but it’s just local dimming so it’s not nearly as good) and it leads to an average looking display by comparison.

The communal aspect remains a *crucial & irreplaceable* aspect. I’ve been witnessing how different it is for me to even listen to live radio vs streaming music, there’s this sense that you’re living something together with many other people. Same with watching a tv series episode vs streaming it. See the clip showing the apartments of an entire building displaying synchronized lighting due to almost everyone watching the new Game of Thrones episode. Even if the watchers don’t explicitly realize this, they most certainly feel it deep down and that changes the quality of their experience. Social experiences increase vividness & richness of felt experience. There’s a possibility that metaverse/VR world developers will try to incorporate this into their virtual environments by replicating some aspects of real life moviegoing, with people buying virtual seats to movies that start at fixed hours, thus partaking in communal experience.

A big thing I notice from watching things on screens vs watching content on my projector is that there is something special about bounced light and storytelling. I have a hunch that there is some reduction in eye strain that allows you to become just a little more relaxed and helps you to forget your watching a story and helps to just immerse you. Really well analysed!! Projection quality, and thus immersion, always have been Nolan's top arguments for cinema/IMAX, calling it the gold standard. But picture and sound fidelity of the headset might even surpass IMAX, creating an even greater immersion... An immersion which you can experience right from your sofa... It's so crazy, if you think about it. I guess, the last missing link to create the full cinema experience is to put an additional subwoofer close to your viewing location, to feel the bass frequencies in your whole body. Because humans aren't particularily good at locating low frequencies, the bass wouldn't need to be virtualized in 3D space anyway.

I agree with you 100%. As a BONUS feature consider this: Apple has effectively miniaturised the 'virtual production' studio into a headset. Think of the LED walls and the virtual reality relationship with the cinema camera in a virtual production studio, as seen in Mandalorian. Notice the environments displayed on the LED sphere are lighting the subject. Now look at Apple's Facetime presentation demo. Apple's background replacement tool can cut out the subject, add in any background, and add appropriate subject shadows on the background. As demoed, it's like a TV weatherman version of virtual production. The only aspect missing from a more cinematic treatment is if the headset uses depth mapping to make it appear the subject is being lit by the background. And all of this happens live inside Apple's headset camera device. 'It's a monitor! It's a computer! It's a camera! It's a camera control unit! It's a 3D scanner! It's a virtual production studio!' I want to make movies for people wearing these kind of headsets

Thanks for making this video. It is highly likely that AR/VR/XR will eventually become the dominant form of visual entertainment. Once the size shrinks down and the price drops, it will go mainstream. However, there is one bit of physics that you just can’t compete with (yet?): lots of large speakers moving air at loud volume. While you can virtually replicate the experience of an IMAX screen in VR, headphones or earbuds just don’t fully replicate the experience of powerful audio. Sound waves can literally travel through your body and shake the seat you’re in. (Not a D-Box… just the sound waves.) Until there is some revolutionary breakthrough in headphone technology, there will still be an “experience gap” in going to a Dolby Cinema theatre vs. wearing a headset. (Having said all of that, most people don’t care as much about audio quality or the audio experience anyway, so VR will eventually be a runaway success in replacing the movie theatre.) If Home Consoles killed Video Game Arcades Netflix killed Blockbuster Amazon killed Book stores and Malls The internet killed the newspaper What will there be left to do for fun outside the home if movie theaters go away? All streaming apps are slowly killing movie theaters and we def experienced that during the pandemic. Is VR really going to be "the final nail" in that coffin? I see VR more as a gaming peripheral. 2 hour battery and an eventual strain on your eyes, no thank you. If we can make AR glasses with holograms now that's something I could see being used at homes by the entire family.

I feel like headsets might just prove to be too much of a hassle. I just wanna sit down and eat my dinner while watching an episode of something, and these headsets will need to come a long way before they’re more convenient than TVs. I don’t want something pressed up against my face when I’m just relaxing. Once they’re as unobtrusive as glasses while being cheap enough for everyone in the house to have one, then they might have a chance to replace TVs.

While this will certainly stab the cinema in the gut, what will happen to live theatre? Will Broadway shows be virtual? Will it let you pick any seat and see the show from any angle? Cinema is only 120 years old, what about theatre, which has had several MILLENNIA? Eastern theatre holds connection to the audience as the highest priority. Forget movie theaters, all auditoriums are dead. Lecture halls, which are around and regularly used in college, are slowly losing audience appeal due to online school and pre-recorded lectures being easier to use (The flipped classroom already existed, but COVID made the flipped method mainstream), concert halls can be faked using Audio Ray Tracing, and even church services can be virtualized. Town halls (which were probably called that because they had auditoriums) are not places for public gatherings or announcements, towns now use Facebook. The field of acoustical engineering will become unrecognizable. Seating, curtains, lights, and sound companies will fade, school thatre will follow Broadway, and audiences will never experience anything as a group. I have read every comment on this video (am looking into becoming a mall manager, an acoustican, and/or a cinema manager). I have read every snarky argument from both introverts and extraverts. What I see is that technology is changing and people are changing with it, but I stand by a few points. Humans were made to be social creatures. Our psychology was made to reward us when we are together. Human interaction is our survival. We are stronger together. As for the ettiquite point, I can't pinoint one thing to blame, but as time has passed, the human race has demanded things to go faster. Efficeny, ease, speed, productivity. In what could be a cause, effect, or companion of the previous statement, people are less and less willing to put up with other people. We can't tolerate each other and we can't tolerate putting too much effort into something. Creating a holistic environmebt where people can exist together, thrive, and produce culture such as art, music, and now cinema was the goal of the architect who made the mall, Victor Gruen. (Replication European marketplaces in the American postwar suburbia). Mall promenades were made for encounters with strangers and sitting out in public without the disruption of weather or traffic. An entire generation grew up and found its place in malls. Kids gained their independence in them, and the malls had movie theaters. (More later) Yet, captialism took over the community spaces and optimized every square foot for profit. Film producers and distributors do the same, causing a cascading effect that ends in overpriced popcorn. Cinemas barely get anything from tickets as distibutors, actors, directoes, crew, IP, and other groups take their cut, so the only choice is ridiculous food markup. There may exist some way to break the vicious cycle, which could be improving and emphasing public education to teach reasoect for others, a return to religious devotion bringing stronger obedience and understanding, or most importantly, an improved family experience where parents can impaet onto children the essential values of the world. Learning disciplne and work ethic can create a better next generation instead of parents and kids glued to their phones or being lazy, or evm too busy for family life. Helecopter parenting and the rising costs of everything requiring a multi-income household have even more complex causes involving capitalism, government, and society, perception of danger, optimization of crime techniques (kidnapping, trafficking, better guns) but it all comes back to people. In a land that emphasises the people, we must be willing to put up with each other (and occasionally support and uplift each other) because we evolved to be greater than the sum of our parts. So, I am sorry this comment on an Internet video about a new way to watch videos became a dissertation on the modern world (I sound like Captain Picard), but any history teacher will tell you that all things are a result of the historical precedents and context. I do realize that most of the comments belive that clinging to the past is unhealthy, but the reason schools teach history is so we can analyze our past, learn from it, and make better decisions. I am excited to see how you prove me wrong, as I enkoy a constructive debate. Long live auditoriums. - A theatre kid P.S. (doesn't really fit into the rest of the essay) The more online interations we have, the less we have social practice with the skills we pock up as toddlers (not counting autism, of course). If kids today can only learn social skills pnline, with no faces or tones to learn to read, all kids will "have autism" because they never got to learn traditional social skills the traditional way.

People will always try to understand new things through an old lens. To this day I find it a little overkill to see so many people bring those big headphones to their plane rides. I’m a musician. This is the kind of thing you see in the studio. But it made it to the mainstream and now it’s just part of it. Why would it be strange to begin with? People want the best sound. It’s a means to an end. The same way people originally brought neck pillows. I’m sure that for someone of a much older generation who was used to gastly outdated airplanes (by todays’s standards), where you could still smoke and options were very limited, bringing a neck pillow might seem pretty odd. But the saying goes, times change and we must change with the times. What ultimately sets this apart is emphasis on reality and responsiveness that a vast majority who actually tried this described. And with that, I think you can achieve so much on a really broad spectrum that I don’t think we can even imagine it, looking at it through today’s lenses. When the microwave first showed up everybody was worried with radiation. Same thing with mobile phones at one point. Did any one of them disappear in the decades they’ve been around? Quite the contrary. They’ve gone down in price so much, anyone can afford them. A lot of people probably don’t know the first mobile phone cost a whopping 4000 dollars when it was released: 11.000 dollars if you adjust the original number to inflation. And now people complain about $700 smartphones. When done right and efficiently, when you listen to what the people want and when you give it to them and keep improving upon it, technology can become quite the powerful tool and ally to have. This is all new. If you’re at all skeptical, give it time. You’ll see (literally).

i find the Vision Pro a great concept. but there are just certain different things that you can’t replace with a headset. You can’t sit on the couch with your friends and watch a movie on your tv, if this headset is supposedly “killing tv’s”. Apple’s Vision Pro seems like a device that would be very useful for someone that lives alone or not with a lot of people, because when it comes to doing things together, like watching a video, watching a movie, watching some tv, anything media related, that we normally would’ve done together on 1 screen, will just not work with a headset. And getting multiple headsets seems even more useless than just having 1 tv. I feel like this device will probably kill off the smartphone if it becomes smaller and the technology gets more advanced and it becomes more cheaper. But i don’t think Tvs or movie theaters will have any massive impact on this, going to the movies is often something you do with other people, what do you think of this?
@impatrickt Жыл бұрын
I think if you've done a shared experience in a Quest, you realize the feeling of being with other people (whether they are with you physically or not) is quite apperent and "real" - I believe stuff like Share Play via FaceTime that Apple has released is a pre-cursor to concepts they will flesh out in Vision. I think they delibertely didn't show multiple people wearing headsets in the same room because of how dystopian it is to us right now - but it's absolutely what they envision for the future. China is already doing VR theaters too where people all wear headsets in the same, which is just funny if you think about it too much LOL

@@karlsma7245 There's already internal leaks on affordable pricing even a year out from Vision Pro. Remember this because not only will the Vision Pro completely sell out, subsequent "affordable" options whether you think its affordable or not will also do insane numbers. Your analogy for the iPhone is perfect because it's truly a nonsense upgrade device year over year for how long now? But people just can't help it. And who's to say it doesn't become subsidized like a Phone bundled with entertainment and software subscriptions. They are already testing the waters with FCP being subscription based. Price is never going to be an issue.

@@karlsma7245 You could put Apple's software, without the eye tracking shit or anything else in a $300 Quest 2 and have a winner. I think you're over analyzing what a consumer version looks like. Quest is selling 20 million units of garbage already. Every Apple product now has a budget mainstream option. iPhone SE, the $349 iPad, Apple Watch SE, and HomePod Mini - even the MacBook Air. Fundamentally though I don't think price will ever be a barrier. Just like the iPhone and every other Apple product. We pay what they say. To firstly let me say I love hearing intelligent people speak. You literally just made the video I wanted to make. People who “claim” to be technologists can’t get past the price. Then once they get past the price, then they say things like “can you imagine wearing this at a party”! These are that same people that said the same exact things about the AirPods. Yes, I will be buying an VisionPro🥽. I am a mobile worker and I don’t have the luxury of having a 30” monitor wherever I go. With this I can have many. That alone is worth it for me. Couple that with all the AR (MR) features and this blows everything else out of the water. And you hit the nail on the head with Apple, being the production company creating content for the device.

One big obstacle that gets in the way of the Apple Vision Pro being a substitute for a trip to the movies: weight. Far more comfortable to watch a movie for 2 hours without something as heavy as the Vision Pro. If there was a way to have the Vision Pro suspended from a ceiling to prevent the need for your body to carry the weight, then it would be closer to being a legit substitute for going to the theater.

In 1948 the US Supreme Court ruled that movie companies could not own theatres. It was some sort of anti-trust issue which movie companies were exploiting to push their own bad movies. But over the last three years these restrictions have been phased out by the DOJ. (I didn't know that until today.) And yet the world hasn't collapsed. The old restrictions have been made obsolete by new methods of distributing films.
