Owain is actually from Awiganyos meaning "desired birth" and Eugene is from a wholly unrelated word origin in Ancient Greek as Εὐγένιος (Eugénios) meaning something along the lines of "well born" with Eu meaning good or well. The only bit in common is that "ganyos" in Proto-Celtic is related to the Greek γένος (génos) via their shared ancestor in Proto-Indo-European "ǵenh₁" - to give birth, be born. I'd recommend supplementing your research with Wiktionary as some of the etymologies for other names you've covered have also been incorrect. Still love the channel, though! Any etymological channel gets a like and subscribe from me!

I would've mentioned Eugene (aka Flynn Rider) from _Tangled_ as another fictional Eugene, personally. ;) I probably would've also mentioned Owen Grady from _Jurassic World_ for another; I wouldn't be surprised if he's at least part of why the name is on the rise.

Without looking into it myself, I suspect that the "genes/genius" part of Eugenius has to do with spirits according to beliefs of the time--the Romans believed that places themselves could be "alive" and personified them as spirits that they called genius loci, for another example of how that kinda works.

My middle name is Eugene, named after Eugene "Gene" Simmons. I looked up the name a few times. From what I found, it means "noble"/"from nobility", so that's probably what they mean with "well born". You said it went from Greek to Latin to English, but wasn't French (Eugène) in between Latin and English?

Sir Owain, despite being caught up with Gawain's feud with Lancelot (over the latter "lancing" Guinevere behind Arthur's back) which broke the Fellowship of the Round Table, was one of the last to die at Arthur's side at Camlann fighting against his half brother Mordred. Their mother was Morgan Le Fay.

I'm a Gene named after Eugene "Gene" Kelly (Singing in the Rain), which I think the nickname is becoming much more popular than Eugene in New Zealand? And, I've seen it referenced as "Eugene = well born" from the greek roots of good and genetics (rather than intelect) - maybe there was a different lineage of meanings, or a bad looking back of dictionaries??

My dad’s middle name is Eugene. And he was born in Eugene, Oregon which is where I was also born and the city was founded in the late 1800s by a man named Eugene Skinner, and there’s a butte here named after him, Skinner’s Butte, because that’s where his original homestead was. I dont know anyone else personally who has Eugene in their name, though

I know another variant: the Russian/Slavic version is Gennady/Gennadij. We had a family friend named Gennadij and he was an absolute beast of a man. "Do you know what the English name is of Gennadij? It is Eugene." And that has always been funny to me, because my stereotype of Eugene is a small, mild-mannered man, and Gennadij absolutely was not. Also I have a great-uncle Eugene who pretty neatly fits that stereotype.

I remember Nick 'Eugene' Dinsmore from WWE too. An uncomfortable gimmick, even at the time. I wonder if there's any link to the name Egon, as in the guy from Ghostbusters? I recently got some stick for suggesting that 'Per' and 'Peter' could be the same name so feel a bit vindicated by the title of this video. There was an X-Factor contestant some years back from Northern Ireland whose name was pronounced like 'Owen' but spelled 'Eoghan' so you can see the link more clearly there.

PLEASE READ THIS!!! This will make your life so much easier, and reduce your pronunciation mistakes almost to zero. The vast majority of scripts are not as stupid as English, and they write words almost exactly as they are pronounced. There are usually five vowels- a, i, u, e, o, but you're an English speaker and you guys need examples because letters have no meaning to you: A- like in fAther. I- like in bEE. U- like in bOOth. E- like in pEt. O- like in mOre. Literally almost every human on this planet knows this, except for English speakers. As for consonants it's a little trickier, but it's safer to assume that they have only one pronunciation, especially in Latin and Greek (so no C that sounds like S, or G that sounds like J). So, eugenius is not pronounced as- "you genius", rather- E U GE (like in GEt) NI US, with the same vowels as I specified above. There are probably languages or words which those rules don't fully apply, but it is still much better than the infuriating English corruption...
