Noël has a diaeresis, not an umlaut. It comes from greek, διαίρεσις, which means separation, and (in english) it's used to indicate that vowels are part of separate syllables. Umlaut is german, meaning changed sound, and it changes that sound the vowel makes. While identical, they are different diacritics.
@hotwax9376

It looks the same as an umlaut though, even if it serves a different purpose.

@@hotwax9376 yeah but of you take the letter ç as an exempel it’s pronounced as an s-sound in french but in Turkish it’s a ch-sound. In Swedish we have Å, Ä and Ö, but the dots above the letters give them another sound. In Hebrew they have a dot in or to the left side of the letter but it can be a dot in the same position but have another function next to another.

Noel is a fairly common name in Ireland, where I'm from, but it's very much a middle-aged/old man name. I've only ever met two Noels under the age of about 50, and even then that's not common

There is actually a difference between the umlaut(German), The Trema(French), and the diaeresis even though they are the same symbol. In German: you can just put an e after the vowel to make it like the umlaut EX: Äpfel - Apple can be written Aepfel In french: the The Trema is used to say that the vowel sound is its own sound, and does not interfere, like Noel vs Noël I am basically dying hearing you call it Noel lol Also, dO yOu KnOw WhAt ThE IPA iS? iT cAn HeLp YoU uNdErStAnD pRoNoUnCiAtIoN!

I watched an animated Christmas special back in the early 2000s titled Noel, it's about a Christmas ornament named Noel, it was really bittersweet with its ending. My grandmother was named Katleen, we all called her Kay, and she was a very opinionated Irish woman with a forceful personality, we lost her a few years ago

The two dots on the E in Noël are a diaeresis, not an umlaut. Nothing wrong with pronouncing it "knoll" if people miss out the accent though. Wrestler Mick Foley called his daughter Noelle. He's famously obsessed with Christmas. Denise Richards played a character called Christmas in the Bond film The World is not Enough. There's a Christmas carol whose title spells it 'Nowell' - in the sense of "the original night of the nativity".
