How is this different in the Eastern Orthodox Church? And how might it be done with someone from a VERY long time ago? I am working on a project to research the possible canonization of the widow who gave everything mentioned in Mark 12 and Luke 21. Jesus and many early church fathers praise her quite highly.

For clarification, the Vatican does not say that ONLY the canonized saints are in heaven. The canonized saints are just the slam dunks. The hall of fame if you will.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation was instituted by Christ Himself as the ordinary means by which we can have our sins forgiven and have absolute certainty of it. So the Sacrament is a great gift from God! We are actually MORE direct with Jesus in the context of the Sacrament than we are apart from it 🙏🏽

1. We confess directly to God in our Catholic nightly examination 2. Beginning of every mass everyone makes a public act of contrition for venial sins. 3. confession with the priest is an AMAZING sacrament. God knows we are relational beings, and the sound of words and physical experience of frequent confession touches our humility and accountability in a way that most cannot imagine up themselves. Example, A child can have an imagination that their parent probably forgives them, but having a real person actually say the words "I forgive you" touches their heart in such a deeper way. Example 2 - someone can read a self help book and mentally imagine better thoughts, which helps. But there's also something very special about physically meeting with a therapist. God really knew what He was doing! Sacramental confession is for OUR benefit. The physical action builds a habit of accountability that is very sanctifying overtime! It's one of my fave sacraments by far! And yes, mortal sins can be forgiven by God through His servant priest.
