The Daily Aus investigates why you can still buy vapes in Australia in Episode 2 of Understanding Vaping.
We’ve known for some time that buying nicotine vapes over the counter has been illegal. So why are they still so easy to buy? And what has slowed down progress on regulation? We also head to Parliament House to hear from those trying to crack down on vapes, and those trying to get them legalised.

The government will lose revenues when people switch from cigs to vapes. Yeah, I can see why they are banning nic vapes without prescriptions. Apparently the breakdown of the cost of ciggies are: Retailer mark-up: $3.13 Manufacturer component: $7.21 GST (1/11th retail price): $3.52 Excise at $1.24335 per stick: $24.87 According to the ATO, the total tobacco duty collected in 2020-21 was $14.3 billions. If every smokers stop smoking, that's a loss of $14.3 billions annually to the Federal coffers. Health budget in 2023-24 is $101.0 billion.

Agree. Only reason I gave up tobacco 10 years ago was vaping. I'm far healthier now than I was.

I’ve been smoking for 15 years, I bought a non-nicotine vape - I haven’t had a cigarette in 3 weeks now. Ban cigarettes, then phase out vapes would be the right way forward. But should invest more into vapes cause people need a way to destress in hard times, alcohol shouldn’t be the only way to destress.

Good on you, congratulations. Just in case you're vaping disposables, it most likely has nicotine in it. The manufacturers omitted a label on them with nicotine content, to get around the previous restriction on nicotine. Otherwise, ignore what I said. Cheers.

Vaping has not killed even one person and yet cigarettes and killed billions and billions of people over the few decades alone. Why don't we worry about the real problem with smoking and stop focusing on vaping which actually saves lives? I'll never understand the hatred that people have for vaping and not for smoking cigarettes How happy the lady showing them just makes me feel sick 🤢 to my stomach.

@allanthomas7345 Congratulations and keep up the great work!! Vaping works differently for everyone and some people not at all. Some of what you experienced could have been from damage caused by decades of smoking but either way as long as your not smoking anymore your lungs and body are healing. I smoked for 33 years and if I hadn't found vaping 8 year's ago I'd probably be dead by now. Smoking was killing me. I was getting pneumonia multiple times a year the last few years I was smoking. Now thanks to vaping I can breathe and I rarely even get a cold. I do still vape but if I didn't I'd probably start smoking again. Vaping has literally saved my life.

@allanthomas7345 I dont want to scare you but theres a chance you can develop Copd . My dad smoked for 25 years and stoped . 18 years after quitting he got copd . The doctors said the cigarettes layed the way for copd for him . He smoked a pack 20 a day for 25 years . But good on you for quitting. I was a chain smoker for 3 years , 22 years ago . I vaped 5 years starting in 2017 . I quit vaping aswell

@allanthomas7345 Yea man its a terrible thing to have my late dad couldn't do anything anymore . Just coughing and coughing and shortness of breath . In the morning was the worst for him as he would cough up clear stuff and clearing his throat constantly. You did a great thing to quit. You should be ok if not then its just one of those things .

There was no reason to restrict the dry herb vapes that use tobacco and/or “medicinal”cannabis without the harmful oils that are superheated

The problem with vaping is it was suppised to help people give up smoking and everyone was told its 95% safer. Unfortunately, most people now doing it didn't smoke before and are now ex-smoker in status. If it kills them in 20 years time they will be classed as smokers.

2:16 if you have a hit of one and you cough, the smoke feels very heavy or you get a slight headspin, it’s got nic. If it doesn’t have that same effect it isn’t nicotine ones. Btw, for anyone wondering you don’t get addicted the first hit you have. It takes multiple and for me it was over about a week.

I just quit nicotine altogether. It's just getting too difficult to obtain now. It was about a month of withdrawal symptoms but got through it. Been smoking since 2004 and switched to vapes in 2018. I smoked/vaped because I simply enjoyed it.
