Worked in basically everything there: 5 years as VP of Football Operations, 2 years as Player Personnel Analyst, 3 years as Assistant GM. According to the Eagles website, his job is "focused on player evaluation, roster management, and resource allocation, with a particular emphasis on integrating traditional and analytical methods in decision-making." No prospective GM worth anything will agree to a shotgun marriage with McDaniel. It’ll be Philbin and Hickey all over again. Hickey was like Ross’ 5th choice or something because no one of any merit wanted Philbin, as HC: So all you got was a one year wonder with Hickey who was just happy to be there. Any real GM is going to want to hire his own HC. If Grier goes, McDaniel must go too. But the one that really has to go is Ross. Does anyone in all seriousness think Ross is capable of hiring a competent GM and HC after his decade and a half long record of utter failure?
@richardolney2546Күн бұрын
There aren't any "real GMs" out there, you basically get one chance, if you fail you will never get another GM job. We got TV draft guys like Mike Mayock getting GMs jobs. He didn't work his way up the ladder. John Lynch was a ex player, went into broadcasting, asked Kyle Shanahan to keep him in mind for a GM job after he left Atlanta. He didn't rise up the ranks and do years of college scouting. Heck might as well hire Tom Brady to be GM, at least we know he will watch tons of film and players will respect him.
@danielcosta6238Күн бұрын
Great stuff, Kyle! My only counter is that bad oline builds predate McDaniels. The devaluing of the oline is baked into how this team does business since Richmond Webb was on the team. When you have guys in personnel like Grier, Engroff and Hunt helping to pick the groceries for 20 plus years, this is what you get. If the next GM doesn’t completely clean house on the personnel side, you might get more of the same.

Grier's father Bobby was the associate director of pro personnel for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL) from 2000-2016. Prior to that, Bobby Grier spent several years with the New England Patriots. Bill Parcells philosophy was to never use high draft picks on offensive linemen. I remember an interview where Chris Grier shared that belief just like Parcells and his father. Please feel free to check me on this. I just remember Grier quoting that same belief.
@richardolney2546Күн бұрын
Slightly incorrect Grier drafted Austin Jackson & Tunsil in the 1st rd & Patrick Paul was 2nd rd. He was promoted to the director of college scouting in 2007 and was part of the team that drafted Jake Long & Mike Pouncey in the 1st rd. Like the Hall of Fame GM Bill Polian said he would never use a high draft pick on a Guard, he said you can find anybody to plug and play that position. This is why are guards suck. The tackles are not bad on this team but they can't stay healthy. Anytime this team looks good like early last season is because the Oline was healthy. This last game vs the Texans they were down Austin Jackson, Lamm & Armstead who has a PFF grade of 91.2(2nd best in the NFL). The past two season Grier has found excellent Centers in FA, Connor Williams was the top Center according to PFF before he got hurt, Brewer is ranked 7th this year. This is the main problem with Grier is he hits on players but they can't stay healthy, inconsistent and are not coached well.

Ross could well be a downside for joining the Dolphins. There have been coaching/leadership character/toxicity issues for at least a decade. The common denominator there is Ross himself. Maybe it's not necessarily from him, maybe he's too much of an absentee owner handing over the reins and not setting a standard. Maybe he doesn't have good standards. But there could well be an ownership issue. But of course, it may be impossible to know. If I were in the nfl and looking at an opening, I'd be considering that carefully.
@gelandresКүн бұрын
Prioritizing doesn't mean ignoring the position. Tackles are a priority because the combo skills are harder to find. You still need NFL starters at G. It's just the position doesn't ask as much as it does T, which should make it easier to find I think. Same with a TE that can both block and catch. You don't need a star because the WRs do most of the work, just a guy that can do both. And same with LBs. And yet, Grier can't seem to find these guys. I wouldn't be surprised though if Ross waits another year, to give the new GM a cleaner plate. I was surprised you didn't mention the fans popular choice of Louis Riddick 😆

This is not an attractive location. This organization has made mistake after mistake. They hire the wrong ppl consistently. Steven Ross gave McDaniel an extension. Chris Grier failed to deliver a good Oline. I can go on with all the crazy roster decisions. last four coaches, Joe Philbin, Adam Gase, Brian Flores, and McDaniel. I think Grier selected McDaniel and Flores. I like Grier, but he needs to go. I like Mike, but he needs to hire an actual OC to call plays. Fans pay the ultimate price. I've been watching since Jimmy Johnson was head coach. This team keeps having epic meltdowns. Every season fans are let down. It is so hard being a Dolphin's fan. Chris Grier and Mike need to both be fired. This GM spot can be good if Ross actually hires someone that can get the job done. We need a new coach as well. I think Miami needs to clean house on the roster. Lot of overpaid players. I would keep Tua because I don't think he is the issue. Actually, try to build around Tua. This team is soft. I wish we were built like the Bills. Miami is a laughingstock of the NFL. Grier better hang on to those receipts because a lot of players who got paid didn't show up this year.

Ross should have gotten rid of Grier long ago, we had a better head coach and Grier let him go, Ross has devastated this once proud franchise, this mess has been going on for at least 10 years.
