Today we are unloading the new Piper 235 project we got out In Minneapolis from the trailer that Joe hauled it back to the rescue hangar on. Once we get it off the trailer, we’ll be going over the damage on this plane and doing the first few checks now that it’s in the hangar and we can work on it. Will the engine be saveable or will it require a complete tear down and overhaul? Find out in todays episode!

I started watching Rebuild Rescue at the start of the 410. Over the years I anticipated new content almost like some of our mothers would have been when we were younger and they were onto a new soap opera 😂😂😂. But I will tell you, learning of the loss of Sam definitely hits home. I have never met anyone of the crew but I can relate to loosing friends, or fellow Marines. Life will always move forward, and the legacy of Sam will continue. Some may not understand what the team is dealing with both emotionally, legally, financially etc. Some of us do. And we thank you for sharing these post videos of what is going on. Keep up the great work! I promise it will get better :)

According to my calculations, if you did the minimums to bring the pane back to life, you'd be in it around $85k. If you do the overhaul on the engine, you're up to $105k. You'll have more profit margin if you don't overhaul the engine because I suspect that wouldn't increase the value at the same rate it would cost you.

I don't know how you're doing it.... it honestly looks like you all are learning how to move on with all the changes going on. It will be interesting to learn about the number change on the plane. I agree with I like the number in "wiskey". It will exciting to see how you put a little bit of Sam this and projects to follow. You all always do a great job having fun and still being serious about safety. I do like the idea of a similar panel in the Saratoga but this one deserves to get its cockpit panel back as well. As always.... looking forward to the next episodes I know will be coming. Thanks for sharing and moving forward. Bob

I hate to say, but Jason seems to chase rabbits a lot. I thought this channel was about getting the 301 operational, not buying more wrecked airplanes to get side-tracked on. I know it helps to fund the 301 project to do quick flips, but it usually never works "quick" with airplanes. I am excited to see the 301 flying and doing various charity & mission projects. Maybe put the 'other' airplane builds on a separate channel?

Yes, it is going to be a lot of work and a lot of hours, but I really think it will pay off. As far as the engine, I would wait and see how everything looks before deciding on the IRAN. The impact Sam as had on Rebuild Rescue is immeasurable from the outside looking in. Because y’all’s faith is not present in each episode, it is very encouraging to see Sam’s godly leadership and the growth in the teams’ faith because of it! Keep proclaiming Christ! I hope these verses encourage y’all as well: Matthew 5:1-18, Romans 1:16, Galatians 6:4. I am keeping the Ganow and Rebuild Rescue family in my prayers. You can work on your own aircraft under the supervision of a certified mechanic. I didn't see any real work being done.
@KurtFlunkn
@KurtFlunkn 2 ай бұрын
Here is the text from FAR 43.3 which defines persons authorized to perform maintenance, etc: Paragraph (d) states: "A person working under the supervision of a holder of a mechanic or repairman certificate may perform the maintenance, preventive maintenance, and alterations that his supervisor is authorized to perform, if the supervisor personally observes the work being done to the extent necessary to ensure that it is being done properly and if the supervisor is readily available, in person, for consultation. However, this paragraph does not authorize the performance of any inspection required by Part 91 or Part 125 of this chapter or any inspection performed after a major repair or alteration." Airworthiness Directives (ADs) are required under FAR part 91. FAR 43.3(d) clearly states that you cannot supervise a required inspection. So, this crankshaft AD runout check cannot be used for AD compliance as this was performed by a non-certificated person. Another task like removing the propeller can be done under supervision.
@buckmurdock2500

@@KurtFlunkn Yep, anyone can do it the work under supervision but their name MUST be recorded in the maintenance record as the person doing the work. Ref: 14CFR43.9(a)(3). How many times do you think Joe and Jason's name appear in aircraft maint. records?

What about the wing spar AD? If those cylinders are mid time too, it might be more cost effective to go ahead and have a complete overhaul of the engine. Let the shop you take it to decide on the IRAN or OH. What do you think would look better when you advertise it for sale?
@KurtFlunkn
@KurtFlunkn 2 ай бұрын
There are major differences between FAA AD 2004-10-14 and Lycoming mandatory service bulletin 533C. While it is true that only the AD is a regulatory requirement for FAR 91 operators, it is factually incorrect to state the AD is "...per the rules of Lycoming...." [see @24:16]. I'm sure that a quick call to Lycoming would verify their position on mandatory service bulletin 533C. Complying with only the AD might be construed as the minimum standard of care not being exercised. Also, under FAR 43.3(d) inspections required under FAR 91 (such as an AD) cannot be performed by a (non-certificated) person working under the supervision of an A&P mechanic or repairman. The crankshaft flange run out check shown in this video cannot be used to comply with the AD because this was performed by a non-certificated person. This is not transparent in the video.

I agree having looked into this a number of times over the last 30 years or so. The big costs are the engine then avionics. The airframe is just a box to keep the expensive parts. Just getting the avionics for that price was a great deal. I had a new panel put in with much the same as those Garmin, just fyi, if you want to make it a full IFR panel I would get a bigger screen navigator, like the 750xi or 650xi since the 375 screen size is very limiting and can't show IFR plates, only the 750/G3X will do that. The G3X is NOT IFR certified, for that you need to couple an external approved navigator.

How about getting something done on the 401! You started the journey to rebuild the 401 to help others in need! Not start a salvage business!

Great find and awesome that the prop is under 1000th. Looking forward to seeing it's journey. It's ok to be happy even in grief, it's ok to laugh and smile - they are precious, Sam had a great smile. hugs to you all and Sam's wife and family. x

That airplane was crashed according to its tail number in Ray TWP, MI. just a few miles from where I work and live. How it got to Minnesota I'm not sure but that's crazy that I'm watching you rebuild the airplane that crashed near me!!!! Keep up the good work!!

After the crash, an insurance claim was made and the insurance paid the owner for their loss in exchange for the salvage. The salvage was then put up for auction where salvage companies or individuals try to buy. Wentworth was high bidder so they hauled the salvage to their yard in Minnesota.

Better to spend the huge sum that you are sure to need for this one, on the 401. That was the original idea; to get the 401 flying, but you would rather waste money on basket cases.

wonder why there isn't a soft metal keyway in the prop to absorb impact forces. hate to compare aircraft to a lawn mower but the rotary blade on a mower has one to avoid crank damage when a rock is hit. this 50 cent part on a mower when bent changes the timing and makes the mower hard to start. that's why there so many good mowers at the curb on trash day.

5.0 hp vs 200 hp. There are some small hp airplane engines with a tapered crank and separate prop flange that includes a drive key but it's not really designed to shear on impact. A Woodruff key locking the prop hub to the crank on a 200+ hp engine? Nah, not happening. The prop flange is manufactured into the crankshaft design for that reason.

Why would you want to spend money enhancing performance if the goal is to sell it to make money? Leave that to the next owner.

Well, it´s still in good shape in compare of the history and all I would invest is still a new propeller + a deep cleaning to make it ready to sell it for a fair price, which is the way to make some cash for other projects like the free plane !

As an ex pilot (CPL) about 20 odd years ago, it looks like you have a GREAT buy there. She looks "sweet". Wishing you well, whichever final way you go. Good and Happy flying!

Since you were a CPL you are *never* and ex pilot. Do you still look up when one flies over? (I do) Question answered.

Love that 235! Hope it’s not too bad to get it back to 100% and doing missions. Excited to see what’s next with the 401 as well. Have an amazing weekend! Happy Easter.

Any prop strike needs to get crank, block etc needs to come apart and x-rays along with straightness. I'm not a pilot or an a+p but plenty of friends that are.

The FAA requirement for a prop strike is to inspect the rear crank gear drive pin. Lycoming recommends disassembling and replacing the crank bearings, and rod bolts. We’ve decided the best course of action is a completed disassembly and a thorough inspection including MPI (magnetic particle inspection). I saw a crank a few weeks ago that had a prop strike and was cracked but wasn’t bent. That changed my mind with how far we need to go with prop strike repairs.

@@rebuildrescue right on bro, I wasn't sure of the tolerances. I lije watching your channel. I live in alaska and looking to get my license and buy a plane. Been a lil tough on the pocket after having an accident that tool my life twice in a week. But if I can get in the air and then get my rotary license, then I want to get into search and rescue , I feel the need to help people. Thanks for the feedback on that.

This is exactly what you have to do in order to be able to cover the costs of the gifted plane! Buy it cheaply, repair it and polish it to a “WOW” level and then sell it to newcomers at a profit! A good idea to finance the main project!

Gonna love the G3X. Any chance to pop in a better AP? I fly with a GFC700 and it is dreamy. With a 1000 hours TBO, I am thinking the IRAN is best to do. If it only had a few hundred left, I'd skip and flip I think.
