The problem is that this movie fails at slapstick comedy, according to what the Nostalgia Critic said: Slapstick is funny because of cause and effect: somewhere in the mix, somebody has to suffer. That's the nature of comedy. Now, you can delay the reaction, or have the reaction happen to somebody else, but bottom line, somebody has to be in some form of misery. Carvey, however, throughout the entire film, just smiles this dumbass smile. If he's not gonna be hurt by any pain, then show the reaction of the confused person trying to hurt him. That would be funny, because they're not getting the reaction they wanted. Or if you're playing with the audience's expectation, give a payoff or at least some understanding that that's what you're trying to do. But nope, dumbass smile, that's all we get.
@souljastation54634 жыл бұрын

How to fix this movie: - step one: make it a movie about the legacy of Arsène Lupin, cat burglar gentleman and master of disguise. - step two: make the heir notoriously and humorously incompetent at the thieving job. Also make him unintentionally offensive and causing havoc in public places. - step three: have the main character find his final calling as a climax, the theme of the movie being "be excellent at what you have as a natural talent instead of living in somebody's shadow" Yeah, there are probably many other things to fix, but this is a good start.

@octupusman10008 жыл бұрын
You need to understand that the rating system was kind of different back then, meaning that in a lot of PG-rated movies at the time, they had content back then that wouldn't be suitable for PG-rated movies now, so at least some of the parents of today who enjoy movies wouldn't show this movie to their kids until their tween or teen years or something. Heck, revisiting the first Short Circuit movie again from the 80s, I was admittedly surprised they used the word 'shit' in it. Not that it bothered me personally, but I can totally see some parents being ticked off by that.
@augustwest53568 жыл бұрын
it's so funny how the rating system has changed over the years. some of the stuff in the 80s that had a PG rating would easily be rated R now. Honestly I think in ALOT of ways the rating system was better back then. imagine if the ORIGINAL Ghostbusters was rated PG-13. It wouldn't have had the following it does now, because I think I (and ALOT of its fans) was about 5 when I saw it and loved it. Had it been PG-13 ( if it came out today it would definitely receive a PG-13) my parents, and many others would NOT have taken their young kids to see it. The same goes for dozens of other movies back then

Ty Pallotta 'Jaws isn't bad.' Huh? Nobody in this thread is saying it's a bad movie. What on earth are you talking about? If that's not what you're referring to, I guess you're referring to how you think "Jaws' isn't bad for kids, which in this case, I'm sorry but, that's entirely subjective. Not every kid can handle it. Also, you make it sound like being 'secure' is a bad thing, and I'm not entirely sure why. :/
@shinjiru72388 жыл бұрын
octupusman1000 Americans are the only people who are secure about every little thing. I was talking about how Jaws is appropriate for those who can handle it, by the way. Blood is part of nature, it's sad how many of you people are hiding it from children. They need to get used to seeing it or they'll freak out while they learn about history.

You are truly a hero for watching these movies and reviewing them and going over the story and sad excuse of a plot for people, so they don’t have to watch them. I hereby dub thee the Movie Martyr.

I think you're kind of missing the point of the Turtle Club scene. The point is supposed to be that Dana is pretty incompetent and thinks the club is actually about turtles, and that's why he chose a turtle costume. I loved this movie as a kid, no idea why everyone hates it and takes it so seriously. It was meant to be a goofy kid's movie.

I'm gonna say that as a child I watched this movie and it was funny to me. I don't think it was intended for this generation. I just think this is just for people who do not really care about a decent plot, all they want to do is just watch a movie and laugh at silly jokes. This was a good movie for me as a child... After earth sucked when it came out, it sucked when i watched it, and future generations will ban that movie from playing anywhere. My thoughts.

Hollywood noticed that Dana Carvey is great at impressions so they haded him some cash and a script with 200 pages of "Dana does an impression of some sort".

I remember this movie coming out at the height of Dana Carvey's popularity, thanks to his SNL impersonations. I didn't watch because other than Wayne's World and Church Lady, I didn't find him very funny. If memory serves, he made this movie to impress his young son, which explains a lot. Also, the fart jokes were funny because they lingered on the awkward silence afterward.

This movie was my shit as a kid! I thought the Turtle Club thing was because he had no clue what a turtle club was, so assumed that dressing as a turtle would help him blend in because his character was a total dumbass, but in an innocent, sheltered way, but it's been years, hell, over a decade at this point, since I habitually rewatched this movie. My older brother at least obsessively rewatched Peewee's Big Adventure when he was little, he had good taste from a young age, I guess. To be fair, I also obsessively rewatched Jim Henson's Labyrinth, so while I liked some dumb shit, I also liked some good shit too.

Seems like one of those infamous improv films. Where plot, logic and everything is thrown out, because they let the main star(s) improve and instead of assembling a movie based on the script, they leave the improv in and ditch the rest to stay withing the running time. Ghostbusters 2016 was also one of those movies
@shawnfields2369 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this movie does feel almost EXACTLY like that. Like Ghostbusters 2016, a disgrace, at trying to be funny, and just awful. I've also seen this film, on TV, way too much as a kid; and was obsessed with it. I just want to go back and ask my child self: "what the hell was wrong with you?" But, at least I avoided the god-awful Ghostbusters 2016...

To be fair to Dana Carvey, he did have the decency, honor and integrity to basically stop working after this. It's true that comedy is the hardest type of film to make. In most other genres of film you can usually enjoy a misfire on some level, even if it's only ironically ... but when comedy misfires it fails utterly, leaving nothing but ghastliness.
