Some surprising results! Great video! I think you should make a video series and test all the common chamberings. I would like to see the 7mm-08 from 18" to 24". 6.8 Western would be interesting too

For reference, I took a lot of data on barrel length and muzzle velocity from “ballistics by the inch” and “rifle shooter”, did some averaging, and figured out this; 1. A 5.56 or .223 (assorted loads all averaged) gains about 30 fps for the first inch past 16”, 29 fps for the next inch, 28 fps for the next inch and so on. 2. For .308 with 150 grain bullet it gains about 25 fps for each inch past 16”, 24 fps for the next inch, and so on… Note I said “about”.

Great review. I don't think I have seen a fps comparison on barrel length before. Thanks for using common cartridges 556 and 308.

It makes a difference but not much with cartridge that doesn't hold alot of powder when u get into cartridge that holds 80 plus grain of powder there is a big difference

I agree. That's probably why there are fewer barrel length options for the bigger magnums: you can get a 26" barrel or maybe a 24" barrel too, but that's it. Putting an 18" barrel on a 28 Nosler (or similar) would probably be a big waste of time.

I see pressure waves in a barrel, sorta like variable intake runners or velocity stacks in an internal combustion engine. So going 1-2" longer from one point may not give you as much increased velocity as the next 1-2" would. I can only think it's because there are waves of energy bouncing up and down the barrel as the bullet is pushed out

The video is great! Really solid, useful data. One takeaway for me is that while 16” is a good minimum barrel length for 5.56, 18”+ is what you need for .308. Just in general - lots of exceptions. The archived BallisticsByTheInch web page show good data for pistol cartridges plus .223 Remington. There you see the loss for every inch of barrel increase significantly when you go from 16” to 14” with a 150 grain bullet. Most of the pistol cartridges start showing a decrease in muzzle velocity once you hit a certain barrel length. .44 Magnum and .45 ACP both do best with a roughly 16” barrel. 9mm Luger looks like 12-14” produces maximum velocity. I recently tested .45 ACP in 4.45” HK, a 5” 1911, a 6” barrel revolver (equivalent to 8” case head to muzzle), and a 16” PCC. One surprise was the revolver produced the same velocity as the 4.45” semiauto. I knew the revolver had oversized chambers but wow! The other surprise was the 16” barrel only yielding about 10 fps per inch vs. the 1911. It’s possible the PCC’s blowback action wasted some energy the 1911 retained because of its different lockup mechanism. (This was with 2 different types of 230 grain loads.)

Haven't watched the vid yet but typically the 308 looses appx 25fps per inch.

The 308 info seems really weird. A 125gr goung slower and 150gr or a 165gr. What?
@Thebiggamehuntingblog
@Thebiggamehuntingblog Ай бұрын
You make a good point. That 125gr load is from Hornady's "Custom Lite" line that's a lighter bullet going slower than normal to provide a low recoiling option for hunters. I was curious to see if a "low powered" load like that would be less sensitive to barrel lengths than more typical loads.

@@Thebiggamehuntingblog ohhh I see, I had thought maybe that was a custom load to basically have an exaggerate example of what the velocities would look like. My bad

No worries. That was a good question because it is indeed an unusual load.

Any barrel shorter than 24 inches is too short, my Savage 110 in 223 has a 26 inch barrel, and I typically get 3,400 ft/s with just 55gr fmj ammo.

Could you do a comparison between rounds being in direct sunlight at the same temp from being covered or stored? Direct heat could create a higher temp. Just curios.

Ironic when a dude gets a magnum-ish cartridge, but then puts it in a 20” barrel, reducing the velocity to that of a non magnum. Weird flex

Sometimes the priority is the short barrel. And if it is, you’ll have to start with a hotter load to retain performance

@@cjberanit is for this reason I am looking for a rifle with falling block action. A 26” barrel leads to a gun that is as long as a bolt action with 20” barrel.

@@edwardhoward4708I just got a Ruger No. 1-B in .270 Winchester with a 26” barrel. It doesn’t feel any longer than my 22” Sako A III carbine. I’ve only taken it to the range to sight in the scope, but I think it will turn out to be a sweet rifle.

I Had a LH M77 Converted from 30-06 to 9.3x62 a few years ago. Benchmark Barrle in WA, made the barrel and install it. I then Had BRUBAKER ARMS do the internal adjustments to get it feeding and extracting Perfectly. It Shoots wonderful and i have Taken Deer, Bear and Elk with it over the past 4 years. If i where to have another 9.3x62 made BRUBAKER ARMS would be the first person i would talk to. Good Luck with your Project!

Other than to sell more rifles to bad aims looking for a magic bullet, there's zero need for anything other than 30-30, 308, 30-06, and 300 win mag.
Are ammo companies lying about muzzle velocity?
